(The Lord – Our Keeper)

Thi Thiên 121

 

“Tôi ngước mắt lên trên núi: Sự tiếp trợ tôi đến từ đâu? 2 Sự tiếp trợ tôi đến từ Đức Giê-hô-va, Là Đấng đã dựng nên trời và đất. 3 Ngài không để cho chân ngươi xiêu tó (trượt ngã); Đấng gìn giữ ngươi không hề buồn ngủ. 4 Đấng gìn giữ Y-sơ-ra-ên Không hề nhắp mắt, cũng không buồn ngủ (không cần ngủ). 5 Đức Giê-hô-va là Đấng gìn giữ ngươi; Đức Giê-hô-va là bóng che (chở) ở bên hữu ngươi. 6 Mặt trời sẽ không giọi ngươi lúc ban ngày, Mặt trăng cũng không hại ngươi trong ban đêm. 7 Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ gìn giữ ngươi khỏi mọi tai họa. Ngài sẽ gìn giữ linh hồn ngươi. 8 Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ gìn giữ ngươi khi ra khi vào, Từ nay cho đến đời đời.”

(I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all (evil) harm—he will watch over your life (soul); 8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.)

 

 

I. Need Help

> We have all experienced somewhat the terrible impacts of the 2016 historic flooding from last week. (Trong những ngày qua, c/ta ai nấy phải đối diện, không nhiều thì ít, tai họa của cơn khủng hoảng nước lụt ở nhiều nơi trong tiểu bang Louisiana.) 

# Watching the news, we saw many houses, cars, school buses, churches, stores, a whole subdivision were buried under the water… that none of us has ever seen anything like it before. (Xem TV thấy biết bao nhiêu những chiếc xe hơi, nhà cửa, trường học, nhà thờ, cửa tiệm, và kể cả nguyên một cư xá như chìm trong nước… mà chưa bao giờ thấy xảy ra ở đây.)

> Many locations have never been flooded before… even in the big flood in 1983, but not this time, because the amount of rain water was almost double. (Có nhiều chỗ chưa bao giờ bị lụt lội… ngay cả sau trận lụt lớn vào năm 1983; nhưng lần này số lượng nước mưa gần gấp đôi nên không thể tránh được.)

# People estimated that the total amount of rainwater pouring down from last weekend was almost equal to the total rainwater from last year (2015). (Người ta ước số lượng nước mưa chỉ trong một cuối tuần lễ qua… gần bằng tổng số nước mưa cho cả năm ngoái 2015 vừa qua.)

# Some of the gauges that people used to measure water levels in the 1983 flood… were under the water. (Những cái thước người ta dùng đo mức độ nước cho trận lụt vào năm 1983… cũng bị chìm lún trong nước lụt kỳ này.)

> Unfortunately, many people have to leave their homes, and find refuge in some of the shelters. (Đáng tiếc là vô số người phải di tản tìm chỗ tạm trú ở những nơi trợ giúp.)

 

> Many people are living in hopeless; they can only wait for help from the government agencies, liked FEMA, or non-profit organizations to rebuild their homes, schools, and stores. (Vô số người sống thất vọng; họ chỉ có thể chờ đợi sự giúp đỡ từ những cơ quan cứu trợ của chính phủ, như FEMA, hay những cơ quan từ thiện để phục hồi xây dựng lại nhà cửa, trường học, hay cửa tiệm của mình.)

> Many of them have nothing else left, no flood insurance, exhausted, and can only hope for the best. (Họ mất tất cả, không có bảo hiểm lụt, mệt nhọc trong sự dọn dẹp, chỉ còn có một hy vọng mỏng manh mà thôi.)

> “Help” is the word… that so many people hope for… to rebuild their life in the next several months and even years. (“Giúp đỡ” là nhu cầu cần nhất trong lúc này… để họ có thể xây dựng lại tương lai.)

 

 

II. God can Help

> This morning, we read Psalm 121 that the Israelites would often sing… while making their yearly pilgrimage to worship in the Jerusalem temple. (Sáng nay, c/ta đọc TT 121 mà dân sự Chúa thường dùng như một bài ca… họ hát khi trên đường đi đến thành Giêrusalem thờ phượng ĐCT.)

> Psalm 121 reminds us the Source of all the help we need in all circumstances of life… is God; no matter what journeys we are travelling on. (Thi Thiên này nhắc c/ta “Nguồn” của mọi sự giúp đỡ trong mọi hoàn cảnh đến từ Đức Chúa Trời… trong bất cứ cuộc hành trình nào c/ta đi.)

> This Psalm reminds us that the best way to travel in life… is to travel with the Lord; because He will help us like no one else can. (Thi Thiên này nhắc điều bình an nhất trong mọi cuộc hành trình là khi c/ta cùng đi với Chúa; Bởi vì chỉ có Ngài là Đấng duy nhất mới có thể giúp đỡ c/ta.)

 

# In those days, the road from Jericho to Jerusalem was so dangerous. (Trong thời xưa, con đường từ thành Giêricô đến Giêrusalem để thờ phượng… có nhiều sự nguy hiểm đáng kể.)

> There were no air-conditioned cars, no cell phones, no Wi-fi, no TripAdvisor GPS, liked we have today… just the dust and the heat and maybe a donkey or camel to carry their luggage. (Không như c/ta ngày nay, họ không có xe hơi với máy lạnh, máy ĐT cầm tay, máy GPS hướng dẫn đường, nhưng chỉ là những con đường đầy bụi bặm, gồ ghề ở dưới sức nóng của mặt trời, may ra thì có thêm con lừa để chở đồ đạc mình đi.)

> They had many real reasons to be fearful of the journey ahead, so they would sing this song of Psalm 121; because singing these words brought them comfort and strength. (Có nhiều nỗi lo sợ cho dân sự Chúa trên cuộc hành trình này, cho nên dân sự thường hay hát bài Thi Thiên 121 để lòng họ cảm nhận được sự bình an.)

> These words helped them to have the same sense of peace and security… that you and I can also experience today… as we are recovering from the flooding disaster happened last week. (Lời của bài TT này giúp họ có cảm xúc an ninh và bình an… như c/ta cũng có thể kinh nghiệm giống như vậy… khi đối diện với trận lụt kinh khủng vừa xảy ra.)

 

> Psalm 121 started out with a question – “Where does my help come from?” (Bài TT 121 này bắt đầu bằng một câu hỏi: “Sự tiếp trợ tôi đến từ đâu?”)

# The answer, and also for this morning message is: “My help comes from the Lord.” (Câu trả lời và cũng là sứ điệp cho c/ta buổi sáng hôm nay, đó là: “Sự tiếp trợ tôi đến từ Đức Giêhôva.”)

> That word “help” signifies protection. God is being pictured in this Psalm as our Guardian. (Chữ tiếp trợ này đồng nghĩa với ý “bảo vệ,” vì Chúa như là Đấng Bảo Vệ canh chừng mỗi c/ta.)

> The troubles before us due to the historic flooding may not be the same as the ones God’s people faced, but our unchanging God still protects us from ALL circumstances. (Trận lụt lớn mà nhiều người gặp phải có thể không giống như nan đề của dân sự Chúa đối diện với; nhưng ĐCT của c/ta là Đấng không hề thay đổi, luôn bảo vệ c/ta trong mọi hoàn cảnh.)

 

> The next question is then… how does God protect us from all troubles of life? (Câu hỏi tới đó là ĐCT làm thế nào để bảo vệ c/ta đây, khỏi những tai họa trong cuộc sống?)

> In this Psalm, the author suggests three ways God protects us from all dangers. (Tác gỉa TT 121 nhắc đến 3 điều Chúa có thể bảo vệ c/ta.)

 

1) First, we see that God protects us by keeping us from falling… in verses 3-4. (Thứ nhất là Ngài không để “chân ngươi xiêu tó, trượt ngã;”)

> For the travelers to worship in Jerusalem, one of the dangers was that of falling… because of the rough and unpaved roads. (Cho những người du hành đến Giêrusalem thì một trong những nỗi nguy hiểm là dễ bị trợt té… vì cuộc hành trình của họ trên những con đường gồ ghề nhiều đá sỏi.)

# A person could fall and sprain an ankle, or break a leg. (Một người dễ có thể bị vấp ngã, trợt chân và chẳng may té nứt xương hông.)

> So God promised His fearful journeymen that He would not “let their foot be moved;” this means that He would not let them slip and fall. (Chúa hứa sẽ trợ giúp những kẻ hành trình bằng cách Ngài không để chân họ bị trợt té.)

# Experienced last weekend to help sand bagging and carrying two-30lbs bags, loaded into trucks last week, stepping over the mud, and rainwater under the rain – very slippery, arms exhausted – and pray always that God gives me strength; and don’t let me fall, because I forgot to bring any extra clothes to change out. (Máy ngày qua tôi cũng có kinh nghiệm xúc cát vào những bịch plastic cho người ta dùng chận nước lụt vào nhà; mỗi bịch nặng trên 30 lbs, mà phải xách 2 tay 2 bịch bước đi trong bùn dơ ướt rất dễ trợt té; tôi cứ cầu nguyện Chúa giúp sức cho khỏi bị trợt té, vì mình không có mang theo một bộ quần áo nào hết để thay ra.)

> God watches over every of our steps, liked a father or a mother watches over their baby’s steps. (Chúa canh chừng từng bước chân c/ta đi, giống như một người cha hay mẹ canh giữ từng bước của đứa bé con mình.)

 

> How is God able to do this? (Chúa giữ gìn c/ta như thế nào?)

a) God can surely help us… because the Psalmist said… our help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth. (Tác gỉa TT trước hết nhắc c/ta rằng Chúa có thể giúp đỡ c/ta vì Ngài là Đấng quyền năng, là Đấng đã dựng nên trời và đất.)

> He is powerful and the creation witnesses His unlimited power. (Quyền năng của Chúa được làm chứng bởi công việc sáng tạo lạ lùng của Ngài.)

> There is no human work under the sun… that can compare to the creation work of God. (Không có kỳ công nào của con người ở dưới trời… mà có thể so sánh cho bằng sự sáng tạo vĩ đại của Chúa.)

> His name is El-Shaddai, meaning the “God the Almighty & Strong,” He is above all others. (Tên Chúa là El-Shaddai - Đấng quyền năng và mạnh mẽ, trên hết mọi thần.)

 

b) Verse 4 says - God will neither “slumber nor sleep.” (Câu 4 cho thấy Chúa giúp đỡ cho c/ta được… vì Ngài là Đấng “không hề nhắp mắt, cũng không buồn ngủ.”)

> God always watches over His people… because He doesn’t sleep; doesn’t need to sleep. (Chúa canh chừng con dân của mình luôn… vì Ngài không hề nghủ.)

# When a person is asleep, they are unconscious, unaware of what is going on around them. (Khi một người nghủ thì không còn biết chi được nữa xung quanh mình.)

# Many of the pagans in Old Testament days believed that their false gods occasionally slept and had to be awakened. But this is NOT so with God. (Nhiều tà thần trong Cựu Ước hay nghủ mà cần phải được đánh thức dậy, nhưng Chúa của c/ta thì không như vậy.)

> He never sleeps nor slumbers; He is aware of every step you take in your life, and is able to nourish you when your foot would “slip.” (Chúa không hề nhắm mắt và Ngài luôn canh giữ từng bước chân của c/ta, không cho bị xiêu tó hay trợt ngã.)

> God can help us, because He is a “full time” God, 24/7 in 52 weeks a year. (Chúa có thể giúp đỡ c/ta luôn vì Ngài luôn thức tỉnh 24 tiếng mỗi ngày, 7 ngày mỗi tuần, 52 tuần lễ mỗi năm.)

> When you feel inadequate and tiresome, God is your strength and hope. (Mỗi khi c/ta thấy mệt mỏi, kiệt quệ, hãy nhớ Chúa là sức mạnh của c/ta… và là hy vọng đời đời cho linh hồn mình.)

> Trust Him with your every step, follow wherever He leads, and know that “He will not let your foot be moved.” (Hãy cứ tin cậy nơi Chúa trong mọi bước, để Ngài hướng dẫn mà không để chân c/ta bị trợt té.)

 

> Not only does God protect us by keeping us from falling, but by...

2) Sheltering us from circumstances as in verses 5-6. (Chúa không chỉ giữ gìn bước chân của c/ta khỏi bị trợt ngã thôi… nhưng còn là Đấng che chở c/ta nữa như có chép trong c. 5-6 – “Đức Giê-hô-va là bóng che ở bên hữu ngươi. 6 Mặt trời sẽ không giọi ngươi lúc ban ngày, Mặt trăng cũng không hại ngươi trong ban đêm.”)

 

> Not only did the travelers have to fear the possibility of being injured by slipping or falling, but there was another danger caused by the surrounding circumstances. (Không phải chỉ sợ bị trợt té là điều nguy hiểm cho những kẻ du hành mà thôi, nhưng còn ngoại cảnh xung quanh họ nữa.)

# For the travelers, sun stroke was a dangerous reality. Many also believed that the beams reflecting off the moon could be deadly as well. (Sức nóng của mặt trời ban ngày hay ánh sáng của mặt trăng ban đêm cũng có thể làm hại những người du hành.)

> Verse 5 says God is our “Keeper.” (c. 5 cho thấy Chúa là Đấng gìn giữ c/ta.)

 

> How does God preserve us from the dangers of the sun and moon? (Ngài gìn giữ c/ta bằng cách nào khỏi sức nóng của mặt trời?)

# God is “your shade at your right hand.” (Chúa ban cho bóng mát ở bên tay phải của c/ta luôn.)

> He is the “shade” in that He gives relief from the heat of the sun and moon. (Ngài là bóng che chở c/ta khỏi sức nóng của mặt trời trong ban ngày.)

# The desert is a merciless place; the sun burns with a severe heat that can weaken our strength. (Sa mạc là nơi có sức nóng thiêu đốt mọi người du hành mà làm cho họ dễ bị đuối sức và mệt mỏi.)

> In the Middle East, the temperature can get up to 120 degrees in the Summer months. (Nhiệt độ ở sa mạc bên nước Trung Đông có thể lên đến trên 120 độ trong những tháng mùa Hè.)  

> Heat injuries such as heat strokes are a common threat; yet God shades us, the shadow of His protection covers us. (Con người c/ta dễ bị kiệt sức; nhưng Chúa là bóng che để bảo vệ cho c/ta.)

 

> God protects us from our circumstances not only because He is aware, but also because He is always present. (Chúa không chỉ thấy và biết che chở c/ta một lúc nào thôi, nhưng luôn luôn vì Ngài luôn hiện diện khắp nơi và mọi lúc.)

# The same word which we translate to “shade…” also translates as “shadow.” (Chữ “bóng che” này có cùng một nghĩa của “bóng hình.”)

> God is like our shadow; He goes with us everywhere we go. (Chúa luôn ở bên cạnh c/ta như là bóng với hình, khắp nơi nào c/ta đi, có Chúa ở đó.)

> Your shadow follows you every moment of the day; just as Jesus has promised in Matthew 28:20 – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Nơi nào c/ta đi thì cái bóng của mình đi theo đó; Như Chúa Giê-xu đã một lần hứa – “Và nầy, ta thường ở cùng các ngươi luôn cho đến tận thế.”)

> He watches our every steps for going out and coming in, because He is Jehova Shammah meaning “God is there;” He is present everywhere to help, in the mid of the flooding. (Chúa canh chừng từng bước c/ta đi ra và đi vào… bởi vì Chúa là Đấng hiện diện ở khắp mọi nơi.)

> If God is with us, there is nothing in our circumstances that should cause us to fear, for the Lord is our always protection and hope. (Nếu Chúa ở với c/ta thì không có điều gì làm cho c/ta sợ hãi và lo lắng, vì Ngài là sự bảo vệ và hy vọng của mỗi c/ta.)

 

> Just as God sheltered the Isrealites from their circumstances, He shelters us from our life troubles as well. (Giống như Chúa đã che chở dân sự của Chúa trên cuộc hành trình, Ngài cũng sẽ che chở c/ta trong mọi tai họa.)

> That means there is nothing about your circumstances that can hinder God’s plan for your life. (Đây có nghĩa là không có một tai họa nào trên đời này có thể ngăn chận ý muốn và chương trình tốt lành của Ngài có sẵn cho mỗi c/ta là con cái Chúa.)

> There is nothing in your circumstances that must rob you of the joy and faith of walking with Christ, even the historic flooding. (Không có cơn hoạn nạn nào quá lớn… mà có thể cướp lấy đi sự vui mừng hay hy vọng của c/ta trong Chúa, kể cả đến trận lụt lớn vừa xảy ra.)

> You can trust God with your life no matter what your circumstances may be, knowing that He is Lord over your circumstances, and His promises that you will not be stricken by them. (Quí vị và tôi có thể tin cậy Chúa trọn vẹn trong mọi hoàn cảnh… vì nhận biết Chúa tể trị mọi điều mà không để mạng sống và linh hồn của c/ta bị ám hại.)

 

> God protect us by keeping us from falling, sheltering us from circumstances, and by...

3) Defending us against evil as in verses 7-8. (Không phải Chúa gìn giữ chân c/ta không bị trợt té, và luôn che chở c/ta mà thôi, nhưng “Đức Giê-hô-va (còn) sẽ gìn giữ ngươi khỏi mọi tai họa (của kẻ ác). Ngài sẽ gìn giữ linh hồn ngươi. 8 Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ gìn giữ ngươi khi ra khi vào, Từ nay cho đến đời đời.”)

 

> There is a greater force that we cannot see with our eyes; It is more powerful than the force of water flooding that constantly wants to destroy our life, faith and hope in God; (Có một quyền lực mạnh mà mắt c/ta không thấy được; lực này còn mạnh hơn sự phá hoại của nước lụt nữa, mà luôn muốn phá hủy sự sống, đức tin và sự hy vọng của c/ta ở nơi Chúa.)

> This evil force according to the Bible is from ”the rulers… the authorities… the powers of this dark world and… the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Theo Kinh Thánh cho biết đó là quyền lực của ma quỉ… của “các chủ quyền… thế lực… vua chúa của thế gian mờ tối nầy… các thần dữ ở các miền trên trời vậy.”)

> The word for “evil” in verse 7 for some translations signifies the evil intentions other people under the controlled of satan might have. (Chữ “ma quỉ” đây ám chỉ đến những ý định của kẻ dữ được xui khiến bởi quyền lực của quỉ satan luôn muốn hãm hại c/ta.)

 

# Probably, the most frightening danger posed to the travelers was not the possibility of falling, or the chance of being injured by the heat of the sun, but it was the presence of those evil persons who might do them harm. (Có lẽ nỗi lo sợ nhất cho những người du hành không phải là sợ bị trợt té, hay bị nắng cháy của ánh nắng mặt trời, nhưng là những kẻ dữ rình mò muốn hãm hại họ.)

> There were bandits and robbers who were anxious to ambush and steal from others. (Đây là những kẻ cướp đang núp trong những hóc đá, sửa soạn phóng ra để cướp của của họ.)

# The family heading to worship in Jerusalem could often make a good target for their crime because they were likely to be tithing when they arrived and thus might be loaded with considerable wealth. (C/nó biết những người du hành đến Giêrusalem thờ phượng sẽ phải đem theo của quí để lo việc dâng hiến… thì đây là cơ hội tốt để cướp lấy, có thể lấy mạng sống đi.)

> This was a real danger. But for the child of God, they need not fear, for “He shall preserve your soul.” (Đây là nan đề đáng lo sợ, nhưng là con cái Chúa, c/ta không nên sợ hãi… vì Chúa hứa sẽ gìn giữ linh hồn mình.)

> This doesn’t mean that evil will never touch us or hurt us; but it means that we will be preserved, escaped, or even overcome of their evil plans. (Đây không có nghĩa là kẻ ác sẽ không đụng đến và làm hại c/ta được, nhưng Chúa sẽ gìn giữ, thêm sức, cho c/ta có lối thoát, và sức mạnh để vượt qua mọi khó khăn.)

> He protected our life from all harms – although, many of us lost our homes, and possessions, but we did not lose our life; our families are still together. (Ngài bảo vệ mạng sống của hết thảy c/ta… cho dù nhiều người mất của cải, nhà cửa, xe hơi… nhưng gia đình, con cái người thân của c/ta vẫn còn.)

# A man experienced his house got burned down. (Một người đàn ông bị cháy nhà.)

> He ran into the church and shouted: “Pastor - I lost everything, lost everything!” (Ông chạy vào HT gặp vị Mục Sư và la lên: “Mất hết tất cả rồi Mục Sư ơi!”)

> Pastor said: “I am sorry to hear what happened to your wife and children!” (Vị MS trả lời: “Tôi chia buồn cùng anh vì sự mất mát lớn của vợ và con anh.”)

> The man answered: “No, pastor. The house was burned down, but my wife and children are safe.” (Người đàn ông trả lời: “Đâu có đâu MS. Chỉ có nhà bị cháy thôi, chứ vợ con vẫn còn.”)

> Pastor replied: “That’s a blessing that you still have - your family.” (Vị MS trả lời: “Đó thật vẫn còn là một phước lớn cho anh, vì vợ con anh vẫn còn sống.”)

 

III. Learn from God’s Promises

> With knowing that God is our Keeper, our Shade, and our Protector, we can look at troubles of life in different ways: (Với sự hiểu biết Chúa là Đấng gìn giữ, là Bóng Che, và là Đấng Bảo Vệ, c/ta có cái nhìn khác khi đối diện với những tai họa, hoặc hoạn nạn xảy ra xung quanh mình.)

 

1) Every troubles in life can be great lessons to make our faith stronger. (Mọi trở ngại, khó khăn trong cuộc sống thường là những bài học tốt… giúp tăng trưởng đức tin của c/ta trong Chúa.)

> Our faith becomes stronger by first recognizing our weakness as human versus nature. (Lý do là vì c/ta nhận thức được sự yếu đuối của con người… khi đối diện với sức mạnh của thiên nhiên.)

# I learn through this flooding that there is time - the only thing we can do is to sand bag and wait to see how the water level rises. (Qua trận lụt, c/ta thấy nhiều người chỉ biết bó tay chịu trận, chỉ có thể lấy những bịch cát che đỡ nhà cửa mình, và rồi ngồi nhìn nước dâng lên mà thôi.)

> A “monster” beyond our strength that prompts us to seek God with all our heart. (Sức mạnh khủng khiếp của tai hoạ mà c/ta chỉ còn một cách duy nhất… là tìm kiếm Chúa mà thôi.)

> The greater the evil force, the tighter of the grip we hold on to God, knowing that He will not leave us. (Quyền lực của tai hoạ càng mạnh thì tay c/ta phải càng nắm chặt Chúa… và biết rõ được rằng Chúa sẽ không bao giờ lìa bỏ c/ta.)

 

2) Through this flooding disaster, we recognize that all things of this world are only temporary. (Qua những hoạn nạn như trận lụt, c/ta được nhắc lại mọi sự trên đời này chỉ là tạm bợ mà thôi.)

# Nice homes and cars are under the water in a quick moment. (Những chiếc xe đắt tiền, hay căn nhà đẹp đến đâu đi nữa rồi cũng có lúc nước lụt cuốn trôi đi.)

# You have them today, but tomorrow, the water sweeps them away. (C/ta có nó ngày hôm nay, nhưng rồi ngày mai bị cuốn đi mà thôi; nếu nó không đi… thì c/ta cũng bị “trôi đi” thôi.)

> This reality helps us to first seek the kingdom of God… because the only thing lasts would be our soul, our faith and our hope in the great Creator - Who can help and give us the eternal life. (Với sự ý thức này, giúp c/ta dễ “trước hết tìm kiếm nước ĐCT và sự công bình của Ngài…” là bởi vì chỉ có một điều còn tồn tại mãi… là linh hồn, đức tin và sự sống đời đời Chúa hứa ban cho những ai bằng lòng tin nhận Con Ngài mà thôi.)

 

> Knowing this truth, we realize how precious of the peaceful times we have had with our families, the basic life needs such as drinking water and electricity… so we can greatful to God always. > Knowing this truth, we would NOT be selfish to store good stuffs for ourselves only, but share with others. (Với sự hiểu biết này, mong c/ta sẽ không còn có thái độ íck kỷ, chỉ thâu trử của cải cho riêng mình mà thôi, nhưng mau chia sẻ với những người khác.)

> Knowing this truth, we learn NOT to collect so many junks in the home, but practice to live a simple lifestyle. (Ý thức được điều này, mong c/ta sẽ không còn thích thâu trữ đầy những thứ không có gía trị là mấy, nhưng tập sống một đời sống đơn giản.)

# Someone kiddingly said: “The reason God allowed our church to be flooded, because VHBC has stored so much junks, and no one seems wanting to clean up?” (Có người nói đùa: “Lý do Chúa cho phép HT c/ta bị lụt… vì c/ta chứa quá nhiều những thứ cũ kỹ, dư thừa… mà hình như chẳng có ai muốn dọn dẹp sạch hết.”)

> Spiritually, God sometimes allows storms/flooding to come to our life, so we can cleanup our sins? (Về phương diện thuộc linh, có khi Chúa cho bão lụt đến trong đời sống của c/ta, để giúp cho c/ta tự xét và làm sạch lòng mình, xưng tội với Chúa chăng?)      

 

3) Difficult times can help us to be humble, unify and serve one another. (Đôi khi những tai họa xảy ra trong đời sống giúp cho c/ta biết khiêm nhường, hiệp nhất và hầu hạ nhau.)

> This seems to be a good time that… broken relationships can be mended; enemies can become friends to help each other getting through the disasters. (Đây cũng có thể là lúc những mối liên hệ đổ vỡ được hàn gắn lại; kẻ thù trở nên bạn thân… mọi người giúp đỡ lẫn nhau vượt qua những khó khăn này.)

> Neighbors come to know each other liked never before. (Hàng xóm láng giềng đến biết nhau như chưa bao giờ hết, vì cùng có một tâm trạng khó khăn như nhau và có thể giúp đỡ nhau.)

# Hatred, discrimination, and racism are put aside… to replace with a helping hand. (Những nan đề thù hận, thiên vị màu da chủng tộc dễ bị bỏ qua một bên, và thế vào đó là sự giúp đỡ tận tình cho nhau.)

# It’s that time that we can "bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Đây là lúc mà c/ta dễ “gánh ách nặng cho nhau,” và làm trọn luật pháp yêu thương của Đấng Christ.)

# Families are helping one another, opening their homes for the needy. (Gia đình giúp đỡ lẫn nhau, mở cửa nhà mình để tiếp đón những người gặp hoạn nạn, kể cả những kẻ lạ.)

> To me, it seems liked “somebody” had prayed too hard… God listened, and created an environment… so that we can hold hands together, and seek God liked never before? (Hình như có ai đã cầu nguyện tha thiết với Chúa, Ngài đã nghe, và cho phép hoàn cảnh xảy ra, để mỗi c/ta và cộng đồng có thể nắm tay lại với nhau… mà tìm kiếm Chúa chăng?)

 

4) For Christians, trouble times can be great opportunities to shine the love of Jesus. (Cho con cái Chúa, những lúc khó khăn có khi lại là những cơ hội tốt… để c/ta rạng chiếu tình yêu thương thực tế của Chúa Giê-xu cho mọi người.)

# A small church was cooking jambalaya and spaghetti for those victims who tried to load their sand bags to protect their homes. (Một HT nhỏ nấu thức ăn cho những người bị hoạn nạn đang lo lắng xúc cát vào bịch.)

# Churches liked Istrouma open up shelters to help with different needs. (Nhiều HT mở những cơ quan cứu trợ giúp đỡ để đáp ứng đủ mọi nhu cầu.)

# A group of Christian college students get trained so they can be ready to help in cleaning (mud-out) effort. (Một số những sinh viên đại học cơ đốc đang chuẩn bị huấn luyện nhanh… để có thể đến những vùng nước lụt trong tương lai giúp đỡ dọn dẹp nhà cửa cho mọi người.)

> As Christians, when we give a helping hand, the message of the gospel of Jesus sounds clearer… and many will come to know Him. (Khi c/ta bước ra và giúp đỡ mọi người, Tin Lành của Chúa Giê-xu tỏ sáng rõ ràng cho nhiều người thấy mà đến biết Chúa sao?)

> Don’t sit around, find a way to help others in the name of Jesus, to soothe their sadness and bring them hope. (Đừng ngồi yên một chỗ, hãy suy nghĩ đến những cách hay để có thể giúp đỡ mọi người trong danh của Chúa Giê-xu, làm vơi bớt nỗi buồn phiền của họ mà thế vào đó sự hy vọng.)

 

5) A future of something new in Christ is ahead. (C/ta cũng nhìn đến tương lai và nhận biết một sự mới mẻ trong Chúa đang ở đằng trước c/ta.)

> We will overcome all of this together… with God’s help and one another’s support. (C/ta sẽ vượt qua khỏi những khó khăn này với sự tiếp trợ của Chúa và sự chung sức với nhau.)

> Looking into the future, our bright hope will become a reality in a few months from now… as we rebuild our church and community. (Nhìn đến tương lai trong vài tháng nữa, có thể ngôi nhà thờ được xây dựng lại mới, và một tinh thần mới của cộng đồng trong tình thắm thiết với nhau hơn nữa.)

# Then we look back… and can surely say as in Romans 8:28 said – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Và rồi c/ta nhìn lại và nhận thấy lời Chúa thật đúng như có chép trong Rôma 8:28 – “Vả, chúng ta biết rằng mọi sự hiệp lại làm ích cho kẻ yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời, tức là cho kẻ được gọi theo ý muốn Ngài đã định.”)

> Because our God is Jehovah Jireh – the Lord will provide (strength), Jehovah Rapha – the Lord Who heals, and Yaweh Shalom – God of peace. (Bởi vì Chúa của c/ta là Đấng ban cho sức mạnh, Đấng chữa lành, và là Chúa của sự Bình An.)

 

> May God – our Keeper lead us and guide us… to a brighter future for His glory. (Nguyện xin Chúa là Đấng gìn giữ, dẫn dắt c/ta đến một tương lai tốt đẹp… cho sự vinh hiển của Ngài.)

> Is your heart troubled with all the historic flooding problems happening around us?

> Do you know that God wants to be your shelter in the storms of life?

# Sometimes, troubles come into our lives and we feel so hopeless, and exhausted; We wonder and doubt?

> We do not understand all, but we know that God is our Keeper!

> He can be both our shelter and the strength of our life.

> We can trust God in Jesus to shelter (che chở) us from all circumstances… for we follow a Savior who walked upon the water and calmed the most violent of storms.

> We can trust God In Jesus to defend (gìn giữ) us from evil, from falling of faith… because our Lord suffered at the hands of evil, even to the point of death upon the cross... yet he rose again!

 

> If we want to complete the journey, we too must trust God to keep us from falling, shelter us from circumstances, and defend us against evil.

> We can lean on Him, seek God, talk to Jesus first… to find hope and wisdom to go on, to rebuild, and to overcome.

 

> Our life is temporary, but our eternal future is secured in God’s promises… and that is our hope.

> Our eternal home is in heaven that no flooding can destroy.

> Are you willing to trust God today and receive Jesus, His Son into your heart to have this eternal hope?

> And when you ask Him, He will never leave you, He will never forsake you, He will always be with you.

 

> Are you willing to allow Jesus into your life, to lead you, to guide you, to shelter you, to protect you, and to save you?

 

> Let us start to travel our life journey with Jesus… for He cares for us always.

 

The Lord – Our Keeper from All Life Storms

Psalm 121

 

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all (evil) harm—he will watch over your life (soul); 8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

 

          We have all experienced somewhat the terrible impacts of the 2016 historic flooding from last week. Watching the news, we saw many houses, cars, school buses, churches, stores, a whole subdivision were buried under the water that none of us has ever seen anything like it before. Unfortunately, many people have to leave their homes, and find refuge in some of the shelters. Many people are living in hopeless; they can only wait for help from the government agencies, liked FEMA, or many non-profit organizations. “Help” is the word that so many people hope for to rebuild their life in the next several months and even years.

 

          This morning, we read Psalm 121 that the Israelites would often sing while making their yearly pilgrimage to worship in the Jerusalem temple. Psalm 121 reminds us the Source of all the help we need in all circumstances of life is God; no matter what journeys we are travelling on. In those days, the road from Jericho to Jerusalem was so dangerous. So they would sing this song of Psalm 121, because singing these words brought them comfort and strength. These words helped them to have the same sense of peace and security that you and I can also experience today as we are facing the flooding disaster happened last week. Psalm 121 started out with a question – “Where does my help come from?” The answer is: “My help comes from the Lord.” That word “help” signifies protection. The troubles before us due to the historic flooding may not be the same as the ones God’s people faced, but our unchanging God still protects us from ALL circumstances. The next question is then how does God protect us from all troubles of life? In this Psalm, the author suggests three ways God protects us from all dangers. 1) First, we see that God protects us by keeping us from falling in verses 3-4. For the travelers to worship in Jerusalem, one of the dangers was that of falling because of the rough and unpaved roads and a person could fall and sprain an ankle, or break a leg. So God promised His fearful journeymen that He would not “let their foot be moved;” this means that He would not let them slip and fall. How is God able to do this? God can surely help us because the Psalmist said our help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth. He is powerful and the creation witnesses His unlimited power. There is no human work under the sun that can compare to the creation work of God. Verse 4 says God always watches over His people because He doesn’t need to sleep. God can help us, because He is a “full time” God, 24/7 in 52 weeks a year. Not only does God protect us by keeping us from falling, but by sheltering us from circumstances as in verses 5-6. Not only did the travelers have to fear the possibility of being injured by slipping or falling, but there was another danger caused by the surrounding circumstances. For the travelers, sun stroke was a dangerous reality. But God is the “shade” in that He gives relief from the heat of the sun and moon. God protects us from our circumstances not only because He is aware, but also because He is always present. The same word which we translate to “shade” also translates as “shadow.” God is like our shadow; He goes with us everywhere we go. Your shadow follows you every moment of the day; just as Jesus has promised in Matthew 28:20 – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. If God is with us, there is nothing in our circumstances that should cause us to fear, for the Lord is our always protection and hope. Just as God sheltered them from their circumstances, He shelters us from our life troubles as well. That means there is nothing about your circumstances that can hinder God’s plan for your life. There is nothing in your circumstances that must rob you of the joy and faith of walking with Christ, even the historic flooding. God protect us by keeping us from falling, sheltering us from circumstances, and by defending us against evil as in verses 7-8. There is a greater force that we cannot see with our eyes. It is more powerful than the force of water flooding that constantly wants to destroy our life, faith and hope in God. This evil force according to the Bible is from ”the rulers… the authorities… the powers of this dark world and… the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Probably, the most frightening danger posed to the travelers was not the possibility of falling, or the chance of being injured by the heat of the sun, but it was the presence of those evil persons who might do them harm. There were bandits and robbers who were anxious to ambush and steal from others. The family heading to worship in Jerusalem could often make a good target for their crime because they were likely to be tithing when they arrived and thus might be loaded with considerable wealth. But for the child of God, they need not fear, for “He shall preserve your soul.” This doesn’t mean that evil will never touch us or hurt us; but it means that we will be preserved, escaped, or even overcome of their evil plans.

 

With knowing that God is our Keeper, our Shade, and our Protector, we can look at troubles of life in different ways:

 

1) Every trouble in life can be great lessons to make our faith stronger. Our faith becomes stronger by first recognizing our weakness as human versus nature. The flooding “monster” beyond our strength that prompts us to seek God with all our heart. The greater the evil force, the tighter of the grip we hold on to God, knowing that He will not leave us.

 

2) Through this flooding disaster, we recognize that all things of this world are only temporary. This reality helps us to first seek the kingdom of God because the only thing lasts would be our soul, our faith and our hope in the great Creator - Who can help and give us the eternal life. Knowing this truth, we realize how precious of the peaceful times we have had with our families, the basic life needs such as drinking water and electricity; so we can greatful to God always. Knowing this truth, we would NOT be selfish to store good stuffs for ourselves only, but share with others. Knowing this truth, we learn NOT to collect so many junks in the home, but practice to live a simple lifestyle.
