The Purpose of Testing
(Giốp 23:10)
“Nhưng Chúa biết con đường tôi đi; Khi Ngài đã thử rèn tôi, tôi sẽ ra như vàng.”
(But He (God) knows the way that I (Job) take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.)
I. Our Purpose to be Saved
> Everything has a purpose for it. (Ai trong c/ta cũng biết, mọi thứ trên đời này đều có mục đích.)
# Why do you breathe the air? To be alive. (Tại sao bạn cần phải thở ra hít vào? Để mà sống.)
# Why do you go to school? To obtain a good education so later you can have a good job. (Mục đích tại sao các em cần đi học? Để có kiến thức mà sau này kiếm được một công việc làm tốt.)
> Spiritually, why did God save us through His Son? (Về vấn để tâm linh, tại sao Chúa cứu c/ta?)
> We need to ask the Creator Who made us in His image. (Muốn biết thì phải hỏi Đấng đã sáng tạo nên mỗi người c/ta giống hình ảnh của Ngài.)
# Genesis 1:27 said – “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Trong Sáng Thế Ký 1:27 có chép – “Đức Chúa Trời dựng nên loài người như hình Ngài; Ngài dựng nên loài người giống như hình Đức Chúa Trời; Ngài dựng nên người nam cùng người nữ.”)
> Why? For what purpose? (Tại sao vậy? Với mục đích để làm gì?)
> God created us in His image to destine us to enjoy Him forever; and this purpose does not change even after our ancestors Adam & Eve sinned. (Chúa dựng loài người giống hình ảnh của Ngài để c/ta vui hưởng Chúa đời đời, và mục đích này không hề thay đổi, kể cả sau khi tổ phụ loài người là Ađam và Êva phạm tội.)
> God sacrified His Son to die on the cross for our sins, so we can again become righteous before Him and inherit His heavenly kingdom one day. (Chúa hy sinh Con một của mình cứu c/ta để c/ta trở nên công bình lại, mà một ngày hưởng nước thiên đàng của Ngài đời đời)
> So while waiting to receive the eternal life, what is our purpose here… before we leave this earth? (Cho nên đang lúc chờ đợi để hưởng nước thiên đàng thì mục đích của Chúa cho đời sống của mỗi c/ta là gì, trước khi từ gĩa cõi trần này?)
# Romans 8:28-29 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” (Trong Rôma 8:28-29 chép về mục đích đời đời của Chúa cho đời sống c/ta là – “Vả, chúng ta biết rằng mọi sự hiệp lại làm ích cho kẻ yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời, tức là cho kẻ được gọi theo ý muốn Ngài đã định. Vì những kẻ Ngài đã biết trước, thì Ngài cũng đã định sẵn để nên giống như hình bóng Con Ngài, hầu cho Con nầy được làm Con cả ở giữa nhiều anh em.”)
> God’s purpose for us is good to be conformed to the image of His Son, through the justification by the blood of Jesus with an end of glorification with Him. (Ý muốn của Chúa là tốt lành để c/ta được trở nên giống hình ảnh của Con Ngài, qua sự thánh hóa và cuối cùng nhận được sự vinh hiển với Chúa đời đời.)
> So, have you looked at yourself latetly and see if you are more and more liked the image of Jesus Christ each day? (Quí vị có thường hay “soi mặt mình trong gương” mà thấy mình mỗi ngày càng trở nên giống Chúa Giê-xu hơn không?)
> The way God helps us to accomplish this image of Jesus Christ in us is through the process of sanctification to bring glory to Himself. (Tiến trình ở trên đất này để Chúa làm c/ta trở nên giống con Ngài là sự thánh hóa đời sống của mỗi người thường xuyên đem đến vinh hiển cho Ngài.)
> The main purpose for us in this present life is to be holy: (Mục đích chính cho đời sống của mỗi c/ta là phải được “nên thánh đều.”)
# Ephesians 1:4 – “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” (Êphêsô 1:4 – “trước khi sáng thế, Ngài đã chọn chúng ta trong Đấng Christ, đặng làm nên thánh không chỗ trách được trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời,”)
# 1 Peter 1:15-16 – “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Phiêrơ 1:15-16 – “Nhưng, như Đấng gọi anh em là thánh, thì anh em cũng phải thánh trong mọi cách ăn ở mình, 16 bởi có chép rằng: Hãy nên thánh, vì ta là thánh.”)
# 1 Peter 2:9 – “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Phiêrơ 2:9 – “Nhưng anh em là dòng giống được lựa chọn, là chức thầy tế lễ nhà vua, là dân thánh là dân thuộc về Đức Chúa Trời, hầu cho anh em rao giảng nhân đức của Đấng đã gọi anh em ra khỏi nơi tối tăm, đến nơi sáng láng lạ lùng của Ngài;”)
> We must be the holy people of God living in this fallen world. (C/ta phải là một dân thánh của Chúa sống ở giữa vòng thế giới hư vong này, đó là ý muốn của Chúa.)
> So what is a holy people? A people lives a life reflects the characters of Jesus Christ, God’s Son. (Như vậy một dân tộc thánh là ai? Là những người có nếp sống phản ảnh những đặc tánh giống Chúa Giê-xu, Con Đức Chúa Trời.)
II. Our Flesh to Resist
> There is a big problem… because our old flesh is still here, and it will resist to this sanctification process of becoming more in the image of Jesus Christ. (Nhưng c/ta có một nan đề đó là con người xác thịt và những tự dục của nó thì luôn chống nghịch lại tiến trình “nên thánh” của Chúa cho c/ta trở nên giống Chúa Giê-xu hơn mỗi ngày.)
> Even the apostle Paul struggled with it. (Kể cả chính sứ đồ Phaolô cũng kinh nghiệm điều này:)
# Romans 7:18-20 – “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” (Trong Rôma 7:18-20, Phaolô làm chứng điều này – “Vả, tôi biết điều lành chẳng ở trong tôi đâu, nghĩa là trong xác thịt tôi, bởi tôi có ý muốn làm điều lành, nhưng không có quyền làm trọn; vì tôi không làm điều lành mình muốn, nhưng làm điều dữ mình không muốn. Ví bằng tôi làm điều mình không muốn, ấy chẳng phải là tôi làm điều đó nữa, nhưng là tội lỗi ở trong tôi vậy.”)
# Our kids rather play games with an Iphone… than read the Bible? (Con em c/ta thích xử dụng máy Iphone để chat và chơi games… hơn là đọc Kinh Thánh?)
# We rather sleep late… than wake up early to do devotion? (C/ta thích nghủ nướng them… thay vì thức dậy tĩnh tâm với Chúa Giê-xu?)
# We rather watch TV, see movies late Saturday… than to come to church early on Sunday for prayer? (C/ta thích xem TV, coi phim tối thứ Bảy hơn là đến nhà thờ sớm Chúa Nhật để cầu nguyện tự xét lòng trước khi thờ phượng?)
> There are so many comfort zones, self-ambittions, and pleasures in this world to enjoy that resist the process of making us holy in the image of Jesus Christ. (Có rất nhiều những khu vực thoải mái, ước vọng, thú vui trong đời này là những điều cản trở c/ta trong tiến trình nên thánh trở nên giống như Đấng Christ hơn.)
III. God’s Help through Testing
> One of the ways God helps us in the process of sanctification is through the discipline of testing. (Một trong những đường lối Chúa giúp c/ta trong tiến trình nên thánh là Ngài sửa trị c/ta qua sự rèn luyện.)
1) First, God disciplines us because He as a father loves His children and because becoming more like His Son Jesus is a good thing. (Trước hết, Chúa sửa trị mỗi c/ta như người cha thương con cái mình và bởi vì sự trở nên giống hình ảnh của Chúa Giê-xu là một điều tốt lành cho mỗi c/ta.)
# Hebrews 12:5-7 – “It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?” (Trong Hêbêrơ 12:5-7 có chép - “lại đã quên lời khuyên anh em như khuyên con, rằng: Hỡi con, chớ dể ngươi sự sửa phạt của Chúa, Và khi Chúa trách, chớ ngã lòng; Vì Chúa sửa phạt kẻ Ngài yêu, Hễ ai mà Ngài nhận làm con, thì cho roi cho vọt. Ví bằng anh em chịu sửa phạt, ấy là Đức Chúa Trời đãi anh em như con, vì có người nào là con mà cha không sửa phạt?”)
2) Secondly, we must discern that there is a big difference between temptations and testing; don’t get mixed up. (Điều thứ hai, c/ta phải phân biệt rõ ràng sự khác biệt giữa cám dỗ của ma quỉ và sự thử thách của Chúa.)
> You cannot fall into temptations, suffer the consequences, and say that “God has tested me.” (C/ta không thể nào nói Chúa thử thách, bị đau khổ khi c/ta xa vào chước cám dỗ.)
> No, you did choose to sin. (Không phải vậy đâu, chính c/ta đã tự chọn phạm tội.)
# You got drunk, drove your car into a tree – that is not God’s testing. (Bạn say rượu, lái xe đụng vào gốc cây, đó không phải là việc Chúa thử thách mình.)
# You smoke and now have lung cancer, going through the pains and suffering – that is not God’s testing. (Bạn hút thuốc sau này bị bệnh lao phổi, phải cực khổ chữa bệnh, tốn nhiều tiền thì không thể nào đổ lỗi là Chúa thử thách mình.)
3) Thirdly, there is always a purpose in testing. (Mọi sự thử thách của Chúa đều có mục đích.)
# Why do you take tests in school? (Tại sao bạn phải làm bài thi trong trường học?)
> To verify your knowledge of the subject you have studied, before you go to the next class. (Để chứng tỏ coi xem bạn có hiểu cái môn bạn đã học không để học môn cao hơn?)
# To get a nail tech license, why must you be tested both by principles and by practices? (Tại sao muốn làm móng tay phải thi có bằng, thi phần lý thuyết rồi còn thực hành nữa?)
> To make sure you do it correctly according to the standards, so nobody gets hurt. (Để chắc rằng bạn sẽ làm công việc này đúng theo tiêu chuẩn và không làm hại những khách hàng.)
IV. Job’s Testing
> We will look at the life of Job to understand the purposes in Gods’ testing. (C/ta sẽ xem qua đời sống của ông Giốp để thấy những mục đích của sự Chúa rèn luyện con cái Ngài.)
> Who was Job? (Ông Giốp là ai?)
# Job 1:1-3 – “In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.” (Giốp 1:1-3 giới thiệu ông như sau – “Tại trong xứ Út-xơ có một người tên là Gióp; người ấy vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng; kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác. 2 Người sanh được bảy con trai và ba con gái; 3 có bảy ngàn chiên, ba ngàn lạc đà, năm trăm đôi bò, năm trăm lừa cái, và tôi tớ rất nhiều; người ấy lớn hơn hết trong cả dân Đông phương.”)
> Job feared God (spiritual life checked), a good family man (family life checked), and wealthy (provision life checked). (Giốp là người kính sợ Chúa - đời sống tâm linh tốt, người cha và chồng tốt - đời sống gia đình tốt, người giàu có - đời sống đầy đủ sung sướng.)
> But here comes the accuser – satan. (Nhưng kẻ kiện cáo là satan đã đến với Chúa và muốn làm hại Giốp điều gì?)
# Job 1:6-11 – “One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” 9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” (Giốp 1:6-11 có chép – “Vả, một ngày kia các con trai của Đức Chúa Trời đến ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va, và Sa-tan cũng đến trong vòng chúng. 7 Đức Giê-hô-va phán hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến? Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi trải qua đây đó trên đất và dạo chơi tại nơi nó. 8 Đức Giê-hô-va lại hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi có nhìn thấy Gióp, tôi tớ của ta chăng; nơi thế gian chẳng có người nào giống như nó, vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng, kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác? 9 Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Gióp há kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời luống công sao? 10 Chúa há chẳng dựng hàng rào binh vực ở bốn phía người, nhà người, và mọi vật thuộc về người sao? Chúa đã ban phước cho công việc của tay người và làm cho của cải người thêm nhiều trên đất. 11 Nhưng bây giờ hãy giơ tay Chúa ra, đụng đến hại các vật người có, ắt là người sẽ phỉ báng Chúa trước mặt.”)
> Satan reasoned and challenged God to test Job and see if he would curse God? (Quỉ satan thương luợng với Chúa lấy lý do Giốp kính sợ Ngài là vì Chúa ban phước cho ông và thách thức Chúa hãy thử thách Giốp đi để coi ông có sẽ rủa sả Ngài không?)
> And God gave a permission to satan to test Job in Job 1:12 – “The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” (Trong 1:12 – Chúa cho phép nó làm.)
> Here came the testing in verses 13-19 - “One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” 16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”… 18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” (Trong câu 13-19 chép những sự thử thách Giốp phảo chịu – “Xảy một ngày kia, khi các con trai và con gái người đang ăn và uống rượu trong nhà anh cả chúng nó, 14 một sứ giả đến báo tin cho Gióp rằng: Bò đang cày, lừa đang ăn gần bên cạnh, 15 thì dân Sê-ba xông vào chúng nó, đoạt cướp đi, và lấy lưỡi gươm giết các tôi tớ; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông. 16 Người nầy còn đang nói, thì một người khác đến, báo rằng: Lửa của Đức Chúa Trời từ trên trời giáng xuống thiêu đốt các con chiên và tôi tớ, làm cho tiêu hủy chúng nó đi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông... 18 Người nầy còn đang nói, thì một kẻ khác chạy đến, báo rằng: Các con trai và con gái ông đang ăn uống tại nơi nhà anh cả của họ, 19 kìa một ngọn gió lớn từ phía bên kia sa mạc thổi đến, làm cho bốn góc nhà rung rinh, nhà sập xuống đè chết các người trẻ tuổi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.”)
> Job’s possessions burned up (everything in the bank was gone), his servants got killed, and worst of all – a natural disaster took the lives of his ten children. (Của cải của ông bị thiêu đốt hết, những kẻ hầu của ông bị giết chết hết, kể cả 10 đứa con của ông cũng bị tai nạn lấy đi mạng sống.)
# Have you know a person that has to go through the pains and suffering that was so massive? (Bạn có bao giờ nghe đến ai bị rèn luyện nhiều như vậy không?)
> Not done yet, read Job 2:1-10 and see how big this test was – “Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.” 4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.” 6 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.” 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Chưa xong, trong 2:1-10 có chép thêm sự thử thách – “Xảy ra một ngày kia, các con trai của Đức Chúa Trời đến ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va, Sa-tan cũng có đến trong vòng chúng đặng ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va. 2 Đức Giê-hô-va bèn phán hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến? Sa-tan thưa cùng Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi trải qua đây đó trên đất và dạo chơi tại nơi nó. 3 Đức Giê-hô-va lại phán hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi có nhìn thấy Gióp, tôi tớ của ta chăng? Trên đất chẳng có ai giống như người, vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng, kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác; lại người bền đỗ trong sự hoàn toàn mình, mặc dầu ngươi có giục ta phá hủy người vô cớ. 4 Sa-tan thưa lại với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Lấy da đền da, phàm vật chi một người có, tất sẽ trao thế cho mạng sống mình. 5 Nhưng bây giờ xin Chúa hãy giơ tay ra, đụng đến hại xương thịt người, ắt là người sẽ phỉ báng Chúa trước mặt. 6 Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Sa-tan rằng: Kìa, người ở trong tay ngươi; nhưng chỉ hãy giữ mạng sống người. 7 Sa-tan bèn lui ra khỏi trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, hành hại Gióp một bịnh ung độc, từ bàn chân cho đến chót đầu. 8 Gióp lấy một miếng sành đặng gãi mình, và ngồi trong đống tro. 9 Vợ người nói với người rằng: Ủa? Ông hãy còn bền đỗ trong sự hoàn toàn mình sao? Hãy phỉ báng Đức Chúa Trời, và chết đi! 10 Người đáp lại rằng: Ngươi nói như một người đàn bà ngu muội. Ủa sao! Sự phước mà tay Đức Chúa Trời ban cho chúng ta, chúng ta lãnh lấy, còn sự tai họa mà tay Ngài giáng trên chúng ta, lại chẳng lãnh lấy sao? Trong mọi việc đó, Gióp không phạm tội bởi môi miệng mình.”)
> With this great testing, Job did not committee a sin of cursing God as satan accused him. (Qua sự thử thách lớn như vậy, Giốp vẫn không phạm tội rủa sả Đức Chúa Trời, như satan đã kiện cáo ông.)
> Briefly, there are three main reasons why God tests us, learning through the life of Job. (Có 3 điều vắn tắt c/ta học được mục đích tại sao Chúa rèn luyện mình qua sự kiện này.)
1) Utimately at the end, through testing that we can know Who God is. (Cuối cùng qua sự thử thách là để c/ta nhận biết Chúa là ai hơn.)
> Job never complained to God – “Why me?” but just asked “why all the suffering?” but at the end God answered to Job in 38:1-4 – “Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” (Giốp thì không có hỏi “Tại sao Chúa lại phạt con,” ông chỉ thắc mắc tại sao lại có sự đau khổ? Cho đến khi Chúa trả lời cho Giốp biết trong 38:1-4 – “Bấy giờ, từ giữa cơn gió trốt, Đức Chúa Trời đáp cùng Gióp rằng: Kẻ nầy là ai dám dùng các lời không tri thức, Mà làm cho mờ ám các mưu định ta? Khá thắt lưng người như kẻ dõng sĩ; Ta sẽ hỏi ngươi, ngươi sẽ chỉ dạy cho ta! Khi ta đặt nền trái đất, thì ngươi ở đâu? Nếu ngươi thông sáng, hãy tỏ bày đi”)
> God turned around and questioned Job – Who had created the heaven and earth, hung the stars and planets, made the seasons, thunders & lightnings, feed all the animals… (Chúa đặt lại câu hỏi cho Giốp trả lời đó là ai đã dựng nên trời và đất, ai treo những ngôi sao, đặt những hành tinh trong vũ trụ, ai làm ra 4 mùa, sấm sét, ai nuôi tất cả các súc vật…)
> God basically reminds Job - I am the Lord God, the great Creator of all. I give life and have the right to take away any life, I have the right to test any of my creatures. (Chúa muốn nhắc cho Giốp biết rằng Ngài là Chúa, là Đấng Tạo Hóa Chí Cao, Chúa có quyền ban cho hoặc lấy đi mạng sống của bất cứ ai. Ngài có mọi quyền để thử thách, rèn luyện bất cứ ai Chúa muốn.)
> How did Job answer back to God? (Khi nghe xong thì Giốp đã trả lời như thế nào?)
# Job 42:4-6 – “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore, I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” (Trong Giốp 42:4-6 – “Hỡi Chúa, xin hãy nghe, tôi sẽ nói; Tôi sẽ hỏi Chúa, Chúa sẽ chỉ dạy cho tôi. Trước lỗ tai tôi có nghe đồn về Chúa, Nhưng bây giờ, mắt tôi đã thấy Ngài: Vì vậy, tôi lấy làm gớm ghê tôi (hối hận), và ăn năn trong tro bụi.”)
> We are human tends to think less of God… until we are down to the valley of pains and suffering. (Thường thì c/ta ít khi nghĩ về Chúa, tìm kiếm Ngài… cho đến khi c/ta bị đưa vào những thung lũng của sự đau khổ.)
> We often go our own courses and ways... until we hit a “brick wall,” then we really come to know our Savior and Lord Jesus. (C/ta thường hay đi theo đuờng lối riêng của mình, cho đến khi c/ta đối diện với một con đường cùng, và lúc đó c/ta mới đến biết rõ Giê-xu là Cứu Chúa của mình.)
> Through the book of Job, we also come to know that God always reings; He sets the limits. (Qua sách Giốp này c/ta thấy được Chúa là Đấng luôn tể trị và điều khiển mọi việc, Ngài định giới hạn của mọi loài.)

> It was a blow to satan’s face because through Job’s sufferings, he did not sin as satan accused Job to fear God because he was blessed by God, but he feared God because Job knew Who God is. > Parents – your primary purpose is not giving your children the best technologies, best clothes, best education, best toys of this world, but your goal should be to train our children with this kind of faith, to let them know that no matter what happens in their life, when their world is shattered: job loss, family problem, sickness, get a “D” grade – God is still God; He still controls and reigns forever! > Some are the consequences of our bad choices that we have made; others are from God is testing us.
> God saved us in Christ Jesus with a purpose to make us a holy people on this fallen world.
> Our flesh continuously resits to this purpose.
> By God’s mercy, He helps us through the process of testing as a father loves and disciplines his children.
> So help me God to know You more… through the pains and suffering of testing.
> Draw me closer to You because I belong to You.
> Help me to know that through testing that You are closer to me than ever before, and give me the strength to endure all the suffering.
> Help me to not wonder “why?” but asking “what” do you want to teach me through the testing.
> Help me not to be “bitter,” but be “better,” becoming more in the image of Your Son Jesus.
> I want my life to bring glory to You alone, and please You.
> Mold me Lord so that through the testing that my faith will come forth as gold, to know that no matter what, even if You do not bless me, You are still God Who is worthy to be praised and worshipped forever.

The Purpose of God’s Testing
(Job 23:10)
“But He (God) knows the way that I (Job) take;
when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.”
Everything has a purpose for it. Why do you breathe the air? To be alive. Why do you go to school? To obtain a good education so later you can have a good job. Spiritually, why did God save us through His Son? We need to ask the Creator Who made us in His image. God created us in His image to destine us to enjoy Him forever; and this purpose does not change even after our ancestors Adam & Eve sinned. God sacrified His Son to die on the cross for our sins, so we can again become righteous before Him and inherit His heavenly kingdom one day. So while waiting to receive the eternal life, what is our purpose here before we leave this earth? In Romans 8:28-29 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” The way God helps us to accomplish this image of Jesus Christ in us is through the process of sanctification to bring glory to Himself. The main purpose for us in this present life is to be holy. We must be the holy people of God living in this fallen world.
There is a big problem because our old flesh is still here, and it will resist to this sanctification process of becoming more in the image of Jesus Christ. Our kids rather play games with an Iphone… than read the Bible? We rather sleep late… than wake up early to do devotion? We rather watch TV, see movies late Saturday… than to come to church early on Sunday for prayer? There are so many comfort zones, self-ambittions, goals, and pleasures in this world to enjoy that resist the process of making us holy in the image of Jesus Christ. One of the ways God helps us in the process of sanctification is through the discipline of testing. First, God disciplines us because He as a father loves His children and because becoming more like His Son Jesus is a good thing. Secondly, we must discern that there is a big difference between temptations and testing. You cannot fall into temptations, suffer the consequences, and say that “God has tested me.” No, we did choose to sin. Thirdly, there is always a purpose in testing. We will look at the life of Job to undesratnd these purposes in Gods’ testing.
Who was Job? In Job 1:1-3, we know Job feared God, was a good family man, and wealthy. But here comes the accuser – satan. In Job 1:6-11, satan reasoned and challenged God to test Job and see if he was still feared God? And God gave a permission for satan to test Job. In Job 1:13-19 listed the pains and suffering Job had to go through. His possessions burned up, his servants got killed, and worst of all - ten of his children dead because of a natural disaster. Not done yet, in Job 2:1-10, Job was afflicted with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Even his wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” With this great testing, Job did not committee a sin of cursing God as satan accused him.
Briefly, there are three main reasons why God tests us, learning through the life of Job. 1) Utimately at the end, through testing that we can know Who God is. Job never complained to God – “Why me?” but just asked “why?” but at the end God answered to Job in 38:1-4 – “Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” God turned around and questioned Job – Who had created the heaven and earth, hung the stars and planets, made the seasons, thunders & lightnings, feed all the animals… God basically reminds Job - I am the Lord God, the great Creator of all. I give life and have the right to take away any life, I have the right to test any of my creatures. How did Job response back to God in 42:4-6 – “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” We are human tends to think less of God… until we are down to the valley of pains and suffering. We often go our own courses and ways... until we hit a “brick wall,” then we really come to know our Savior and Lord Jesus. Through the book of Job, we also come to know that God always reings; He sets the limits. Note that God permitted satan to harm Job but must spare his life.
