Trở Nên Tay Đánh Lưới Người
(Becoming Fisher of men)
Luca 5:1-11
“Khi Đức Chúa Jêsus, trên bờ hồ Ghê-nê-xa-rết, đoàn dân đông chen lấn nhau xung quanh Ngài đặng nghe đạo Đức Chúa Trời. 2 Ngài thấy hai chiếc thuyền đậu gần bờ, người đánh cá đã xuống khỏi thuyền giặt lưới, 3 thì Ngài lên một chiếc thuyền trong hai chiếc, là chiếc của Si-môn, biểu người đem ra khỏi bờ một chút; rồi Ngài ngồi mà dạy dỗ dân chúng. 4 Khi Ngài phán xong thì biểu Si-môn rằng: Hãy chèo ra ngoài sâu, thả lưới mà đánh cá. 5 Si-môn thưa rằng: Thưa thầy, chúng tôi đã làm suốt đêm không bắt được chi hết; dầu vậy, tôi cũng theo lời thầy mà thả lưới. 6 Họ thả lưới xuống, được nhiều cá lắm, đến nỗi lưới phải đứt ra. 7 Họ bèn ra vọi gọi đồng bạn mình ở thuyền khác đến giúp; bạn kia đến chở cá đầy hai chiếc thuyền, đến nỗi gần chìm. 8 Si-môn Phi-e-rơ thấy vậy, liền sấp mình xuống ngang đầu gối Đức Chúa Jêsus, mà thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, xin ra khỏi tôi, vì tôi là người có tội. 9 Số là, vì đánh cá dường ấy, nên Si-môn cùng mọi người ở với mình đều thất kinh; Gia-cơ và Giăng con Xê-bê-đê, là những kẻ đồng bạn với Si-môn cũng đồng một thể ấy. 10 Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn phán cùng Si-môn rằng: Đừng sợ chi, từ nay trở đi, ngươi sẽ nên tay đánh lưới người. 11 Đoạn, họ đem thuyền vào bờ, bỏ hết thảy mà theo Ngài.”
I. Fishing Hobby
> One of major hobbies in America… is fishing, especially if you live near water, lakes, or sea shores. (Một trong những thú vui chính của người Mỹ là thú câu cá, đặc biệt nếu quí vị ở gần những hồ nước hay bờ biển.)
> Just like any other hobbies, to enjoy fishing you must have the following basic conditions: (Cũng như mọi thú vui khác, c/ta phải có những điều căn bản như sau thì mới biết thưởng thức thú câu cá:)
a) First, you must like fish to fish. (Quí vị trước hết phải thích cá thì mới đi câu cá được.)
# Have you ever gone fishing with someone who hates fishing? (Quí vị có bao giờ đi câu với một người nào rất ghét đi câu cá không?)
> They would complain from the start to the end: “First - It’s too early; Secondly - it’s too hot; even if they catch fish they still complain - it’s too fishy.” (Người đó sẽ phàn nàn từ lúc mới đi, cho đến lúc về: “Thứ nhất - Dậy sớm quá! Thứ hai - Nóng quá, mà cho dù bắt được cá đi nữa thì cũng sẽ nói “tanh quá.”)
> What do you expect – fish should be smell liked your perfume? (Cá thì phải tanh chứ, làm sao thơm như mùi nước hoa được?)
b) Secondly, you must have the right equipment to fish. (Quí vị phải có đầy đủ những dụng cụ để câu.)
> Fishing equipment can cost you a lot of money. (Dụng cụ để câu cá tốn rất nhiều tiền.)
# Some rods and reels in Cabelos’ store can cost over 300$ each, not to mention the price of a nice boat can cost up to more than 50k$. (Có những cái cần câu giá trên 300$ một cây, chưa nói đến chiếc thuyền câu cá với gía trung bình là 50k$.)
# That does not include a big truck to pull the boat, so you can add another 50k$ on top of that. (Chưa kể phải mua thêm một chiếc xe truck mạnh để kéo chiếc thuyền… cộng thêm 50k$ nữa.)
> We don’t catch a lot of fish, but for sure… fishing costs a lot of money, because it is a hobby. (Bắt được cá thì chẳng là bao nhiêu so sánh với số tiền phải bỏ ra, lý do là vì đó là một thú vui.)
c) Thirdly, you must know how and where to fish. (Quí vị phải biết cách câu cá, và biết chỗ nào có cá để câu.)
# People said correctly - 20% of fishermen catch 80% of the fish – why? Because 20% of them know where the fish are. (Có người nhận định rất đúng: 20% những người đi câu bắt được 80% tất cả cá - tại sao? Vì 20% số người này biết những ổ cá ở đâu.)
> You must learn how to fish: what kinds of baits you need for different kinds of fish, how to hook a bait, how to pull the fish in, and even how to clean them. (Quí vị phải học cách câu, dùng loại mồi nào, buộc móc câu như thế nào, kể cả biết làm cá nữa… thì mới có cá mà ăn.)
d) Fourthly, you must dedicate time to go fishing. (Quí vị phải dành thì giờ đi câu cá.)
# Some people bought nice boats, but because of busy-ness, they don’t have time to fish; The boat just ends up sitting in one place, get rusted, and finally it is sold away. (Có những người giàu có mua những chiếc thuyền thật là đắt tiền, nhưng vì sự bận rộn không có thì giờ đi câu; chiếc thuyền nằm ỳ một chỗ nhiều năm, rồi cuối cùng cũng phải bán đi.)
e) You must have patience and endurance to fish. If you try one place that doesn’t work, you try other ways and methods until you catch fish. (C/ta phải kiên nhẫn và có sức chịu đựng. Nếu câu chỗ này không có, c/ta thử chỗ khác, cách khác cho đến khi bắt được cá; đâu có chịu thua đi về?)
f) And of course, there is a great joy and excitement in fishing; The stories you share, the selfie pictures you post on Facebook. (Thú bắt được cá đem đến cho c/ta sự vui mừng hớn hở, nhất là khi bạn bắt được cá lớn, quí vị khoe với bạn bè; quí vị chụp ảnh đăng lên facebook; kể cả có người làm khô con cá và treo trên tường.)
> Thích câu… học cách câu… kiên nhẫn câu… dành thì giờ để câu… và gặt hái sự vui mừng trong thú vui này.
II. Call To Fish for People
> When Jesus came to this world, He also called many people, liked Simon, James & John to go fish with Him… but to fish for people. (Khi Chúa Giê-xu đến thế giới này, Ngài gọi Simôn, Giacơ, Giăng theo Ngài để làm gì? Không phải để câu cá… nhưng để câu người.)
> What does this mean? (Đây có nghĩa là sao?)
1) To understand Jesus’ calling we must first know God’s will. (Để hiểu tiếng gọi này của Chúa, c/ta phải tìm hiểu ý muốn của Đức Chúa Trời là gì?)
# 2 Peter 3:9 presents God’s will as – “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (Trong 2 Phiêrơ 3:9 có chép về ý muốn của Chúa – “Chúa không chậm trễ về lời hứa của Ngài như mấy người kia tưởng đâu, nhưng Ngài lấy lòng nhịn nhục đối với anh em, không muốn cho một người nào chết mất, song muốn cho mọi người đều ăn năn.”)
> God’s will is that everyone to be saved, not perish in the lake of fire, and He is patient with His church… to go out and fish/bring many people into His heavenly kingdom before the endtimes. (Ý của Chúa là không muốn một ai bị chết đời đời trong hồ lửa địa ngục, nhưng Ngài kiên nhẫn với Hội Thánh… đi ra và đem người vào nước thiên đàng trước ngày tận thế.)
> We were ALL born as sinners, be separated from God, and on the way to the eternal perishment. (Hết thảy c/ta đều sanh ra trong tội lỗi, bị phân rẽ khỏi Đấng Sáng Tạo và trên con đường dẫn đến hồ lửa cháy không hề tắt.)
> But from the beginning, God did not create us for that purpose; He wants everyone to live and enjoy His heavenly kingdom forever. (Nhưng từ lúc ban đầu, mục đích của Chúa không dựng c/ta lên để bị như vậy, nhưng Ngài muốn mọi người có sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng của Chúa.)
> So God had a plan to send out His Son Jesus to the earth… on a rescue mission to bring all of us back to His home. (Vì vậy, Đức Chúa Trời có chương trình cứu nhân loại ra khỏi sự phán xét của tội lỗi và được ở trong nước thiên đàng đời đời… qua chính Con một của mình là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu.)
> Jesus came and died on the cross to restore our righteousness that sins made blemished, and whoever believes in Him will be spared of hell, but are waiting to inherit God’s kingdom. (Chúa Giê-xu đã một lần giáng thế, và chịu chết trên cây thập tự gía để chuộc tội lỗi cho mọi kẻ tin – ai tin Ngài sẽ được sự tha tội, và sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng của Đức Chúa Trời.)
2) Jesus already completed this “mission impossible” – it’s done; but everyone needs to know about this saving way, because naturally… “fish” doesn’t like to jump into the boat. (Công cuộc cứu chuộc đã hòan tất, nhưng mọi người cần phải biết sự cứu rỗi này để nhận lấy, vì “cá” không tự nhiên chịu nhảy vào thuyền!)
> In order for the world to know this gift, Jesus called those who have believed in Him… to follow Him, and He would teach them… how to share this Good news to all, illustrated through a picture of fishing. (Để thế giới biết đến món quà cứu chuộc này, Chúa Giê-xu gọi những ai đã tin nhận Ngài thì theo Chúa, học ở Ngài cách chia xẻ Tin Lành cho mọi người, qua hình ảnh Chúa dùng “tay đánh lưới người,” là ngôn nghữ dễ hiểu cho Simôn, vì ông làm nghề đánh cá.)
# On this occasion, Jesus called Peter to follow Him… and He would make Peter to become “a fisherman for people.” (Trong sự kiện này, Chúa Giê-xu gọi một người đánh cá tên Phiêrơ đi theo Chúa… để Ngài làm Phiêrơ trở nên một tay đánh lưới người vào nước thiên đàng.)
3) Many of us here believe in Jesus and saved… but that’s not the end; Now we must follow Him & learn how to “fish” for people as long as we still live on this earth. (C/ta tin Chúa và được cứu để c/ta theo Ngài, được Chúa huấn luyện “làm tay đánh lưới người” cho nước thiên đàng của ĐCT.)
> We are not saved to just sit around and do nothing, we are saved to go to Jesus’ school… learning how to fish for people. (C/ta được cứu rồi không để “ngồi chơi sơi nuớc,” nhưng để đi học trường của Chúa… biết đánh lưới người.)
> This call is for each believer… and to all Jesus’ body… called the church. (Đây chính là trách nhiệm riêng của mỗi kẻ tin… và hội thánh của Chúa chung.)
# In Mathew 28:19-20 - Jesus gave a great “www” commandment before His ascension – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mathiơ 28:19-20 – “Vậy, hãy đi làm cho muôn dân thành môn đệ Ta, làm phép báp-tem cho họ nhân danh Đức Chúa Cha, Đức Chúa Con và Đức Thánh Linh, 20 dạy họ giữ mọi điều Ta đã truyền cho các con. Và này, Ta hằng ở cùng các con luôn cho đến tận thế.")
# Zika virus spreading through mosquitoes is already reached Miami, Florida. What is the State doing there? (C/ta biết vi trùng Zika truyền qua muỗi… đã có dấu hiệu ở Miami, Fl, và chính phủ ở đó đang làm gì?)
> They have many programs to educate/to tell people about this dangerous virus. (Họ có những cơ quan hướng dẫn không tốn tiền dạy dỗ cho người dân sống ở đó hiểu sự nguy hiểm của vi trùng Zika này.)
> They encourage people to not store standing water from outside. (Họ dạy những điều căn bản nên làm… như là đừng để nước bị đọng ngoài sân, là nơi mà muỗi dễ phát triển và sinh sống.)
> They give out mosquitos’ repellent spray free to help coping with this terrible disease. (Họ phát thuốc xịt muỗi cho những người dân, những người homeless không tốn tiền để giúp chống Zika.)
# Sin is even more serious virus than Zika... because it can kill both soul & body of a person in hell. (Tội lỗi là thứ vi trùng còn nguy hiểm hơn vi trùng Zika là vì có thể giết cả hồn lẫn xác của 1 người.)
> Jesus already died on the cross to provide a complete remedy, His blood… to save both soul and body of a person from hell into the kingdom of God. (Chúa Giê-xu đã chết đổ huyết… để cung cấp “thuốc xịt” sạch tội… khỏi con người c/ta rồi.)
> Now we are called to go out and fish for people, to share “the blood remedy” of Jesus, so whoever receives Him will be saved eternally. (Bây giờ c/ta đã được khỏi… thì phải đi ra câu cá người, chia xẻ “thuốc” trị bệnh tội này… để nhiều người nghe, tin nhận Chúa Giê-xu mà được sự cứu chuộc đời đời.)
> We all need to heed this calling, follow Jesus, attend His fishing school, go out into the world… and fish! (C/ta hết thảy phải cẩn thận lắng nghe tiếng Chúa gọi mình, bước đi theo Chúa, học cách câu người từ Chúa, đi ra khắp thế gian mà đánh lưới người.)
III. Be a Successful Fishermen
> How can I be a successful fisherman? (Làm thế nào để trở nên một tay đánh lưới người thành công?)
1) The answer is in verses 5 – “Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything… But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” (Câu trả lời ở trong câu 5 – tin cậy Chúa và làm theo lời Ngài.)
> Do not doubt or making excuses… but just obey – let down your nets. (Đừng nghi ngờ tiếng Chúa gọi mình… chỉ vâng lời… quăng lưới xuống biển đi.)
# Don’t say: “I don’t have the gift; I don’t know much about the Bible; I am already a pastor, a deacon… I already fish last month and no one comes…” (Đừng bào chữa rằng tôi không có ơn này, tôi không biết nhiều Kinh Thánh, tôi đã có những chức vụ trong Hội Thánh rồi, tôi đã làm chứng rồi mà không ai tin…)
# There are so many “I do this, I do that…” that’s why we are NOT successful! (C/ta có quá nhiều những lý do bào chữa: “Tôi như thế này, tôi đã làm như thế nọ…” vì vậy “cái tôi” chưa thành công.)
> We just need to trust Jesus and step out… because He knows exactly where the fish are. (C/ta chỉ cứ hãy tin cậy Chúa, bước ra câu người… vì Chúa biết rõ chỗ nào có cá.)
> Trust His power… to lure the fish into your nets, even the big Ones! (Hãy tin cậy vào quyền năng của Chúa là Đấng sẽ thu hút, lùa “cá” vào lưới của mình; nhưng mình phải chịu quăng lưới ra.)
2) Obey Jesus, and His words… even if it does not make any senses. (Chỉ hãy hết lòng tin cậy và vâng lời Chúa… cho dù có khi thấy không có lý chút nào.)
# Can you see Peter’s thinking when Jesus asked him to cast down the net? (Bạn có thấy được ý tưởng của Phiêrơ khi Chúa bảo ông thả lưới xuống không?)
> “Come on, Jesus – you tell us to do this at the wrong time, wrong place, and wrong side… We fish all night - right time, we went out to the deep – right place, but caught nothing; We are the professional fishermen for many years, this is our professions; and who are you… to tell us to fish? You are just a teacher, a preacher, a son of a carpenter man – what do you know about fishing?” (Có thể Phiêrơ tự nghĩ: “Chúa bảo tôi làm việc hết sức là vô lý, không đúng thời điểm, không đúng chỗ; c/tôi là những nhà đánh cá chuyên môn làm suốt cả đêm, lưới chỗ sâu… mà không được gì hết, còn Chúa là ai, chỉ là một thầy giảng đạo, con của ông thợ mộc, thì biết gì về lưới cá?)
> It does not make any senses… But I will obey you anyway, let down the nets. (Không có lý chút nào… nhưng tôi sẽ vâng lời Ngài thả lưới.)
# Sometimes, we make the same excuses – “You don’t know my brother, Jesus; you don’t know my dad – they have a heart liked a rock; there will be no way that they will listen to my gospel sharing. It will not work… but I will obey you… even this does not make any senses at all.” (Có khi c/ta cũng có sự suy nghĩ giống như vậy – làm sao “loại người” đó tin Chúa được, lòng họ cứng cỏi lắm như đá vậy… nhưng tôi sẽ vâng lời Ngài chia xẻ tin lành với họ.)
3) We must be willing to allow God’s interruptions… because these can be good opportunities for us to catch fish. (Muốn bắt được “cá,” c/ta phải bằng lòng để Chúa làm phiền, làm gián đoạn chương trình của mình.)
> Peter’s thinking - “Jesus – I already washed my nets, they are clean. Its time to go home with the family.” (Phiêrơ có thể nghĩ – “Chúa ơi! tôi đã giặt lưới sạch rồi, và đến giờ c/tôi phải về nhà nghỉ ngơi, bất tiện lắm, thả lưới bây giờ luống công mà thôi, mà còn sẽ phải giặt lưới lần nữa.)
> Our thinking - “I am busy with my daily schedule and plans, gut out the walls, install sheetrocks… I don’t have time to be interrupted… to fish!” (C/ta có thể nghĩ giống vậy – “Con bận lắm Chúa ơi với những công việc phải làm, những chương trình đã xếp đặt; con không có thì giờ để bị làm phiền cho việc câu cá người này đâu.”)
# If you pay attention on Jesus’ life, many times in His journey, he got interrupted by the crowd: the sick, the tax collectors, the prostitutes, the blind, the demon-possed people; but Jesus always stopped to help, to teach, to heal, to eat with them… and so many people followed Him. (Nếu quí vị chú ý quan xát cuộc đời của Chúa Giê-xu, Ngài rất bận rộn và nhiều lần Chúa bị đám đông làm phiền, nhưng Ngài luôn dừng bước… lấy cơ hội để dạy dỗ, chữa bệnh tật, kể cả cùng ngồi ăn với những kẻ xấu nết… vì vậy mà biết bao nhiêu người đã tin theo Ngài.)
# Every day we wake up, each of us always has plans: What projects I will work on today, what meal will I cook tonight, what time will I go to do exercising, play volleyball, what things are on sale that I can buy… and we don’t want anything that can interrupt our schedule and plan. (Mỗi ngày, c/ta thức dậy ai nấy đều có những chương trình đã xếp đặt sẵn: công việc phải làm ở sở, ăn món gì hôm nay, mấy giờ tập thể dục, những thứ cần đi mua… và c/ta không muốn ai gọi điện thoại làm phiền.)
> But don’t you know that many good opportunities to fish for people often come from the interruptions in our life? (Nhưng c/ta lại không biết những lúc c/ta bị Chúa làm phiền… ấy chính là những cơ hội tốt để câu cá người, khi c/ta dừng bước đáp ứng nhu cầu của họ?)
> What was the result when Peter and his men allowed Jesus’ interruption… that they caught so many fish… such that both boats begun to sink. Because Peter allowed Jesus to interrupt his “going home” schedule… to cast the net… one more time. (Phiêrơ đã để Chúa làm phiền mình, thả lưới một lần nữa… để rồi họ bắt được quá nhiều cá, đến nỗi 2 chiếc thuyền gần bị chìm.)
> We should never be too busy to allow Jesus interrupte us… to fish for people. (C/ta không thể nào sống quá bận rộn, không muốn Chúa làm phiền mình… mà đánh mất cơ hội tốt câu cá người.)
# Is the church of Jesus Christ missing so many opportunities to net fish for God’s kingdom… because we are too busy with other activities, and don’t want to be interrupted. (Hội Thánh Chúa có đang quá bận rộn trong những sinh hoạt mà không muốn bị Chúa làm phiền… để rồi đánh mất nhiều cơ hội lưới người vào nước thiên đàng chăng?)
IV. Be One!
> Do you want to be a good fisherman for Christ, our Lord? (Quí vị có muốn trở nên một tay đánh lưới người giỏi cho Chúa Giê-xu không?)
> If you do, then I suggest few things that we all need to do: (Nếu thật muốn, tôi đề nghị với quí vị làm nhũng điều sau đây:)
1) First – Just like Simon, repent your sins, your doubt of God according to the flesh… that is not God’s will. (Hãy bắt đầu bằng sự ăn năn tội… vì đã có những sự suy nghĩ theo tánh xác thịt… không theo ý Chúa.)
a) Pray as – “I am sorry Lord, for a long time, I just kept thinking that fishing for people is the duty of somebody else.” (Giống như Simôn, xin Chúa tha thứ cho con… vì trước nay con cứ tự nghĩ đổ thừa trách nhiệm này cho người khác.)
b) Pray as – “I am sorry Jesus, for a long time, I haven’t trusted You – the God Who can change heart, and do the impossible things. Forgive me for the lack of faith which is a sin, so I confess my sin to you.” (Xin Chúa tha thứ vì lâu nay con nghi ngờ quyền năng của Chúa là Đấng có thể thay đổi tấm lòng, làm được những chuyện không ai làm được. Xin Chúa tha tội thiếu đức tin của con.)
# The church common sin is “NATO” sin – No Action, Talk Only. (Một lỗi lầm mà HT Chúa thường hay vi phạm đó là “Nói nhiều nhưng làm thì ít,” chưa đặt ưu tiên)
> Week after week, month after month, and year after year, we called ourselves fishermen, meet in many meetings, talk about fishing, watch U-tube on how to fish, search for new and better methods of fishing, build a large, beautiful building called "the Fishing Station," but one thing we don’t do is that we don’t go out and fish. (Mỗi tuần, mỗi tháng, c/ta gọi nhau là “tay đánh lưới người,” c/ta họp, c/ta thảo luận, nói chuyện đánh cá, c/ta xem U-tube cách câu như thế nào, c/ta tìm tòi mọi phương pháp câu cá hay… nhưng có một điều chính c/ta chưa làm, đó là chịu đi ra lưới cá, vì không có tiện”)
> We all need to repent of this sin before God. (Hội Thánh Chúa cần ăn năn với tội này.)
2) Secondly, ask God to put in your heart a desire of becoming a fisher of men. (Thứ hai, xin Chúa đặt trong lòng của mình 1 ước vọng yêu mến ~tội nhân, và muốn trở nên tay đánh lưới người gioỉ.)
# At Dai Hoi, we met a fairly new Christian; her name is Tan living in Vancouver, Canada. (Lúc đi dự Đại hội bên Seattle, c/tôi có cơ hội làm quen với một chị cơ đốc tên Tần… sống ở Vancouver.)
> When we drove back to her home, she said something that really wakes me up – She said that her desire is that “the Lord Jesus would not call her home yet, until she finishes bringing 50 more souls for Him.” (Khi lái xe chung về nhà chị, chị có nói một câu làm tôi thức tỉnh: “Một trong những điều tôi mong Chúa cho tôi là giúp đem được thêm 50 linh hồn về với Ngài, trước khi Chúa cất tôi đi.”)
> If she saw Vietnamese people in the park, she quickly came to them and made friends with them; and I am sure for the reason of introducing them to Jesus. (Đặc điểm của chị là khi thấy những người Việt là chị đến gần hỏi thăm, làm bạn, xin địa chỉ… và tôi tin rằng để làm quen và có cơ hội đến làm chứng đạo.)
> Don’t you know that a good fisherman often has the gift of hospitality as well? (Quí vị có biết là người giỏi lưới… thường cũng được Chúa ban cho ơn tiếp khách không?)
> A good fisherman always focuses on fishing is the main thing in his Christian life… because he knows that seeking first the kingdom of God for everyone is the highest priority of Jesus. (Với ước vọng này, người lưới giỏi thường đặt công việc này ưu tiên trong cuộc sống mình… bởi vì người đó biết nước thiên đàng là mục đích ưu tiên trong đời sống giảng đạo của Chúa Giê-xu.)
> To keep this highest priority, a good fisherman knows how to keep other less important things simple. (Muốn giữ việc này làm ưu tiên thì c/ta phải bằng lòng giữ những việc kém quan trọng hơn không làm ưu tiên được.)
# Don’t invest too much time, money, energy in the less important things, but reserve for “saving souls” work. (Đừng đầu tư quá nhiều thì giờ, tiền bạc và khả năng vào những việc kém quan trọng hơn, nhưng để dành cho việc “cứu người hư mất.”)

# Dr. Doren Edwards, a surgeon (bác sĩ chuyên môn ngành giải phẩu) in Erin, Tennessee, tells of a patient of his, Blanche Bennet, whose alcoholic (nghiện rượu) husband had died. Finances (tài chánh) were tight, and life was very hard. She wasn’t a Christian. One day she came to see Dr. Edwards, and he diagnosed that she had cancer, with no treatment was available, and she was very bitter (cay đắng). Dr. Edwards, a Christian and a Gideon, wanted to talk with her about the Lord, but she wouldn’t allow him to share his witness. She did, however, accept a small New Testament. A few weeks later, the doctor learned from the newspaper obituary (mục chia buồn) that she had died. He sent a card to the family, telling them he had donated Bibles in her memory (nhớ thương) to the Gideons. The woman’s daughter called him. “Could you please send us a Bible like the ones you donated in the memory of our mother,” she asked. “We don’t have a Bible in the home. The last six days my mom was alive, her whole life changed. She was no longer bitter, she wasn’t afraid to die, and she said something about knowing Jesus. But she asked that her bible be buried in her hand, so we couldn’t keep it. Would you please send us a bible so that we can find what Mama found in that book?” Dr. Edwards sent them a Bible, and to date the daughter, the son, and one sister have also been saved as a result.

# In fishing – you check for a good weather. It’s a good weather now to fish for people before it goes away.

Fisher of Men
Luke 5:1-11
“One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”
One of major hobbies in America is fishing. Just like any hobbies, to enjoy fishing you must have the following basic conditions: First, you must like fish to fish. Secondly, you must have the right equipment to fish. Thirdly, you must know how and where to fish. People said correctly - 20% of fishermen catch 80% of the fish – why? Because 20% of them know where the fish are. Fourthly, you must dedicate time to fish. You must also have patience and endurance to fish. And there is a great joy and excitement in fishing; The stories you share, the selfie pictures you post on Facebook.
When Jesus came to this world, He also called many people, liked Simon to go fish with Him, but to fish for people. What does this mean? To understand Jesus’ calling we must first know God’s will. 2 Peter 3:9 presents God’s will as – “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. God’s will for everyone is to be saved, not perish in the lake of fire, and He is patient with His church to go out and fish/bring all people into His heavenly kingdom before the end times. We were ALL born as sinners, be separated from God, and on the way to the eternal perish. But from the beginning, God did not create us for that purpose; He wants everyone to live and enjoy His heavenly kingdom forever. So God had a plan to send out His Son Jesus to the earth on a rescue mission to bring all of us back to His home. Jesus came and died on the cross to restore our righteousness that sins made blemished, and whoever believes in Him will be spared of hell, but waiting to inherit God’s kingdom. Jesus already completed this “mission impossible” – it’s done; but everyone needs to know about this saving way, because naturally “fish” doesn’t like to jump into the boat. In order for the world to know this gift, Jesus called those who have believed in Him to follow Him, and He would teach them how to share this Good news to all, illustrated through a picture of fishing. Many of us already believe in Jesus and saved but that’s not the end; Now we must follow Him and learn how to “fish” for people as long as we still live on this earth. We are not saved to just sit around and do nothing, we are saved to go to Jesus’ school, learning how to fish for people. This call is for each believer and to all Jesus’ body called the church. We all need to heed this calling, follow Jesus, attend His fishing school, go out into the world and fish!
How to be a successful fisherman? The answer is in verses 5 – “Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything… But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” Do not doubt or making excuses about the calling but just obey – let down your nets. Don’t say: “I don’t have the gift; I don’t know much about the Bible; I am already a pastor, a deacon… I already fish last month and no one comes…” We just need to trust Jesus and step out because Jesus knows exactly where the fish are. Trust His power to allure the fish into your nets, even the big ones. Obey Jesus, and His words even if it does not make any senses. Can you see Peter’s thinking when Jesus asked him to cast down the net? “Come on, Jesus – you tell us to do this at the wrong time, wrong place, and wrong side… We fish all night - right time, we went out to the deep – right place, but caught nothing; We are the professional fishermen for many years, this is our professions; and who are you to tell us to fish? You are just a teacher, a preacher, a son of a carpenter man – what do you know about fishing?” It does not make any senses, but I will obey you anyway, let down the nets. We must be willing to allow God’s interruptions because these are good opportunities for us to catch fish. Peter was probably thinking - “Jesus – I already washed my nets, they are clean. It’s time to go home with the family.” Our thinking was the same sometimes - “I am busy with my daily schedule and plans; I don’t have time to be interrupted to fish!” But I obey you anyway. If you pay attention on Jesus’ life, many times in His journey, he got interrupted by the crowd: the sick, the tax collectors, the prostitutes, the blind, the demon-possed people; but Jesus always stopped to help, to teach, to heal, to eat with them… and so many people followed Him. Don’t you know that many opportunities to fish for people often come from the interruptions in our life? What was the result when Peter and his men allowed Jesus’ interruption that they caught so many fish, such that both boats begun to sink? Because Peter allowed Jesus to interrupt his “going home” schedule to cast the net one more time. We should never be too busy to allow Jesus interrupted us to fish for people.
Do you want to be a good fisherman for Christ, our Lord? If you do, then I suggest few things that we all need to do: First – Repent your sins, your old thinking according to the flesh that is not God’s will. The church common sin is “NATO” sin – No Action, Talk Only. Week after week, month after month, and year after year, we called ourselves fishermen, meet in many meetings, talk about fishing, watch U-tube on how to fish, search for new and better methods of fishing, build a large, beautiful building called "the Fishing Station," but one thing we don’t do is that we don’t go out and fish. We all need to repent of this sin before God. Secondly, Ask God to put in your heart a desire of becoming a fisher of men. At Dai Hoi this year, we met a fairly new Christian; her name is Tan living in Vancouver, Canada. When we drove back to her home, she said something that really wakes me up – She said that her desire is that “the Lord Jesus would not call her home yet, until she finishes bringing 50 more souls for Him.” What a heart for evangelism! With this desire, a good fisherman always focuses on fishing is the main thing of his life because he knows that seeking first the kingdom of God for everyone is the highest priority of Jesus. To keep this highest priority, a good fisherman knows how to keep other less important things simple. Don’t invest too much time, money, energy in the less important things, but reserve for “saving souls” work. Many things God provides for us are just tools for fishing and not the main thing. This nice building we have is only a tool to nurture the “fish.” Our music teams do a great job of picking out songs and leading us in worship; But the music is just a tool. Fellowship time is just a tool for us to build “friendship” bridges with “fish.” Sport is just a tool for us to make friends and invite them to church hearing Jesus’ gospel. Thirdly, Ask God to help you to see the opportunities and willing to be interrupted. The question is not if God ever provides us any opportunities, but do we see them?
