(A New Lifestyle)
Luca 19:1-10
I. Lessons Learned from the Flood
> Due to the historic flood occurred last year in August, we have been labored doing a lot of cleaning and reparing of our church facility for the last 4 months; Although, it’s not 100% completion, we rejoice to begin to worship here again in this new sanctuary place from this Sunday on.
> The flood has truly humbled us in seeking God and experiencing His delivery and blessings.
> Also, we are much appreciated for the effort of many people who have been worked so hard to rebuild the church, and those who support us through donating money to pay for the repair costs.
> I have been keeping tracks of many lessons that I have learned through this historic flood event: (Tôi ghi chú nhiều bài học qua cơn lụt lịch sử này:)
a) First, I learn that flood water can rise quickly and unexpectedly overnight. The truth is that tragedy can hit anyone of us at any time, so it’s wise to find a safe refuge in God today, because you do not know what will happen tomorow.
b) During the clean-up effort, I learn about the terrible smell of sewer water and mold. Just like our sins before God – how awful they are that we need to be cleansed daily through the confession of our sins to Jesus.
c) Through the flood we found out many junks stored in some of the rooms that needed to throw away; they were kept there for a longtime and nobody cares to clean them out. Just liked many of our bad habbits in our life that pile up over times, but need to be thrown away because they sting up our spiritual life.
d) As we threw a lot of junks away, I learn that all material things in this world do not have the eternal value; they will all get old, rusted, out of date, smelly, and useless; So, we should not invest all our life effort in the things down here, but focus on the things from above that are eternal.
e) I have learned about team work that can move a mountain of trash; a little effort from each person combined can accomplish big things. So, we can do a greater work for Jesus in VHBC if we learn to work together.
f) I have learned about the generosity of the people, especially the Christians throughput the US who have donated the money, gift cards, food to help us during this difficult time. They set the example of God’s generosity for us to follow, in blessing others.
> And so, we are here this morning in this building with new flooring carpets, new walls, and a fresh smell of paint.
> We are here with a heart of thanksgiving to God, and an appreciation to all our donors and workers who have done so much to this day, so we can have a new place of worship again. (C/ta có ở đây để trước hết dâng lời cảm tạ Chúa và bày tỏ lòng cám ơn những vị ân nhân và những người bỏ nhiều công sức sửa chữa để c/ta được trở lại nhóm ở nơi đây.)
> We do experience a newness in this place. (C/ta thật kinh nghiệm sự mới mẻ xung quanh c/ta.)
> Let me ask you a question - Do you like new things or you rather be comfortable with old stuffs?
# Do you remember the fresh scent when you drive your new car the first time?
> Do you remember the fresh scent when you move into a brandnew house the first time, the smell of new paint, new wood, new furnitures…?
> Even more than that, this morning we will have the baptism ceremony after the service, that is a beautifully picture of a spiritual newness of all who have been saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ.
> The baptism is a picture of an amazing transformation from an old-self to a new life, after a person receives Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior.
# The Bible in 2 Corinthians 5:17 said – “… if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
> This newness is not about an outside cosmetic facelift, but a newness of the inner heart and mind that produce a new lifestyle being liked Jesus Christ.
> This newness from inside out, starts with Jesus the moment you came to know Him, and from that day on, His Holy Spirit renews us daily, until the day of perfection when we all see Jesus face to face. (Sự mới mẻ của tâm hồn bắt đầu từ Chúa Giê-xu, ngay lúc bạn đến tin nhận Ngài, và từ ngày đó trở đi Thần Linh của Chúa đổi mới c/ta hoài, cho đến ngày c/ta được trọn vẹn gặp mặt đối mặt với Chúa.)
# 2 Corinthians 4:16 the aposlle Paul reminds us – “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
> What kind of new lifestyle we should experience? What are its patterns? (Nếp sống mới này là sao? Nó có những nét đẹp nào?)
> I want to use the life of a tax collector named Zacchaeus to illustrate some of the principles of this new lifestyle.
(Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.)
II. Zacchaeus met Jesus
1) Who was Zacchaeus? (Xachê là ai?)
> Zacchaeus was a tax collector for Rome during the time of Jesus.
> Zacchaeus was also a wealthy tax collector.
# All the tax collectors during Jesus’ time were usually wealthy and lived a very comfortable lifestyle, because they cheated in collecting taxes of others.
> For that reason, the Jewish society during that time tends to look down on them as sinners, scumbags, unclean, the “dirt,” and traitors because they worked for Rome, who was the oppressor of the Jews.
# We can compare them as corrupted communists in Vietnam who constantly oppress the people and take the people’s lands and possessions. You heard many stories at the Tan Son Nhat airport where you must bribe them 5, 10 dollars to get through. If there are thousands and thousands visitors going through the airport each day for 5 to 10 dollars for each gate, they can become rich in no time?
> Just as Zacchaeus, he was not just an ordinary tax collector, he was a chief tax colletor, having a high position and power over many others who were working under him.
> Zacchaeus didn’t care what the people ridiculed him, as long as he had a lot of money, power and lived a comfortable life.
2) Until… one day Zacchaeus met Jesus because of his curiosity.
> Zacchaeus probably didn’t really care about morals or ethics; he just wanted to see this famous rabbi named Jesus who had done many miracles. (Xachê đâu có nghĩ đến đạo đức là gì, ông chỉ tò mò muốn coi xem mặt mũi của vị thầy tên Giê-xu này như thế nào mà đã làm nhiều phép lạ.)
> Since he was a short man and the crowd would not yield a room for him to come close to Jesus, Zacchaeus had to climb up to a sycamore tree to view Jesus.
> But Zacchaeus didn’t know… on that day Jesus was seeking to meet him and changed his life forever.
# Today people meet Jesus in different ways.
> Some met Jesus at the valley of suffering or a mountain top experience.
(I heard a witness from a man living in Florida.) Sau biến cố 30/4/1975 anh bị bỏ vào tù. (After April 30, 1975, the end of Vietnam war, he was put in jail.) (His relatives visited him to give him food, wrapped in torned pages from the Bible.) (He accidently read these Bible pages for the first time and came to know Jesus and saved in the prison.)
> There is never a coincidence; but the truth is that God is always looking for someone to save.
> For the Vietnamese, we know that the end of Vietnam war on April 30, 1975 was not a coincidence, but God’s plan to save many of us, including me. Why didn’t we end up in Africa or in a Muslism country, but America; so that many of us have a chance to hear the Gospel, and we become not just US citizens, but also have the citizenship in heaven.
> I believe some met Jesus during the flood last year.
# The Message Newspaper wrote about an atheist woman over 80 years old found Jesus in a Christian shelter because her house got flooded, and at the shelter she had the opportunity to hear the Gospel preached.
III. A New Lifestyle
> The Bible didn’t give us the details of the conversation between Jesus and Zacchaeus that evening, but for sure Jesus had changed his life. Zacchaeus experienced an amazing transformation of his life after he met Jesus.
> I am sure that Jesus shared with Zacchaeus about the Gospel, the true treasure was not about money, or living a comfortable life in this world; but to know God through His Son, Jesus Himself.
> The treasure was not about power or prestige in this world but the forgiveness of sins, no longer under the bondage of greed, the judgment of guilt, but living freely for God and waiting for His eternal kingdom of heaven.
1) Zacchaeus acknowledged his wrongdoings and stopped sinning.
# The Bible said Zacchaeus stood up in front of the crowd and promised to Jesus that from that day on, he would stop cheating anyone’s taxes, and if he did it again, he promised to pay back 4 times.
> This was a risky decision because Zacchaeus knew that his income would shrink significantly from that day on.
# Before Zacchaeus met Jesus, he thought that the cheating and lying were just a part of life; you should do that to survive, to get ahead of everyone else, to be wealthy and happy, to have a lot of money, and money means power; C’est la vie.
> But after Zacchaeus met Jesus, he realized it was a sin to collect taxes more than they should be charged because this was not right, this was not God’s will.
(A story of two men came to an evangelistic service of Billy Graham, sitting next to each other.) (During the invitation time, one man said to the other: “This is the truth. I need Jesus in my life. I will come down and express my faith in Him; so, do you want to go with me?”) (The other man answered: “Yes, I also need Jesus, but before I come down with you, I need to return your wallet, because an hour before, I was a pickpocket thief.”)
> Isn’t that the same transformation that happens in many of us who truly came to know Jesus?
# Our lifestyle is being changed slowly with a new conscience of what is truth and good according to the teachings of Jesus. (Đời sống c/ta bắt đầu thay đổi dần bởi lương tâm mới đi theo những lời dạy dỗ của Chúa Giê-xu.)
> We now have a new power to break the bondange of sins and of wrong doings to others.
> Aren’t our words changing?
# Many people before they met Jesus used to curse when they got angry, but not anymore.
# Others used to lie freely, gossip others, telling dirty jokes, easily harass others, because of their old nature, but not anymore.
> Aren’t our habits changing?
# Some used to cheat to get ahead of the game, but not anymore.
# Some used to gamble every paychecks, get drunk every weekend, didn’t care about feeding the family, but not anymore.
# A witness from a man who used to drink a lot, but later he quitted because he became a Christian. His friends came over and mocked him as a fool who believes in this guy named Jesus who once changed water into wine and challenged him to ask Jesus to do that, so they could have wine to drink and get drunk again. The man said: “Jesus does more than change water into wine.” Look at my family, since the day I came to know Jesus, I quit drinking and now my family has good food on the table every day, our house has new furniture, we just bought a new car, because of all the money I used to spend on booz and liquors. Don’t you see that Jesus turn water into more than wines?”
2) Not just stop doing wrongs, Zacchaeus begun doing good to others.
# Zacchaeus was never care about the poor before; he wouldn’t spare anyone either rich or poor. If you don’t pay taxes as he commanded, you go to jail.
> But after Zacchaeus met Jesus, he stood up and took half of his possessions to give it to the poor.
> Not just his income would shrink, but his money possessions in the bank was cut in half.
> He acted upon his new conscience following his salvation he received from Jesus that day.
> Zacchaeus learned something more than money, power, or prestige, he now knew what love is.
> Zacchaeus learned that the first and greatest commandment is to “love God with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his mind, and the second is like it: ‘Love his neighbor as himself.”
> A new lifestyle in Jesus is no longer focused on self, but others.
> A person with a new lifestyle does not just go to church every Sunday and ask - what is it for me, mine, and myself, but after church he goes home and blesses others, his wife, his children, his neigbors, showing kindness to the ones who are less fortunate than him in the name of Jesus Christ.
# He doesn’t go to church to find wrong things from others, but to ask whose burden I can carry, whose feet that I can wash, today?
> The new lifestyle is truly the reflection of the life of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. (Nếp sống mới phản ảnh rõ ràng đời sống của Cứu Chúa Giê-xu.)
# Philippians 2:6-8 – “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
> Jesus left His glory in heaven and came down to this earth, not for Himself, but for all of us to find a Way to return home to our heavenly Father.
> Every time you look at His cross, I hope you see clearly what a new lifestyle means.
> And this is what I wish will happen to each of us, to VHBC in 2017, stop doing wrongs and quick to do good for others, because we have met Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
----------------------
> So have you met Jesus yet? (Bạn đã gặp Chúa Giê-xu chưa?)
> Why do billion and billion people come to Jesus? (Tại sao có cả tỉ tỉ người muốn đến với Chúa Giê-xu?)
> They want to experience a new heart that only Jesus can give.
> We are here in this new place, but have you experienced a newness in your heart?
> Do you want a new heart for the New Year that will produce a new lifestyle, or you satisfy with your old self?

A New Lifestyle
Luke 19:1-10
“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Due to the historic flood occurred last year in August, we have been labored doing a lot of cleaning and repairing of our church facility for the last 4 months; Although, it’s not 100% completion, we rejoice to begin to worship here again in this new sanctuary from this Sunday on. The flood has truly humbled us in seeking God and experiencing His delivery and blessings. Also, we are much appreciated for the effort of many people who have been worked so hard to rebuild the church, and those who support us through donating money to pay for the repair costs. There are many lessons we can all learn from this historic flood event: First, I learn that flood can rise quickly and unexpectedly overnight. The truth is that tragedy can hit anyone of us at any time, so it’s wise to find a safe refuge in God today, because you do not know what will happen tomorrow. Through the flood we found out many junks stored in some of the rooms that needed to throw away; they were kept there for a longtime and nobody cares to clean them out. Just liked many of our bad habits in our life that pile up over times, but need to be thrown away because they sting up our spiritual life. As we threw a lot of junks away, I learn that all material things in this world do not have the eternal value; they will surely get old, rusted, out of date, smelly, and useless; So, we should not invest all our life effort in the things down here, but focus on the things from above that are eternal. I have learned about team work that can move a mountain of trash; a little effort from each person combined can accomplish big things. So, we can do a greater work for Jesus in VHBC if we learn to work together. I have learned about the generosity of the people, especially the Christians throughput the US who have donated the money, gift cards, and food to help us during this difficult time. They set the example of God’s generosity for us to follow, in blessing others. And so, we are here this morning in this building with a heart of thanksgiving to God, and an appreciation to all our donors and workers who have done so much to this day, so we can have a new place of worship again.
Do you like new things or you rather be comfortable with old stuffs? Do you remember the fresh scent when you drive your new car the first time? Do you remember the fresh scent when you move into a brand-new house the first time, the smell of new paint, new wood, new furniture…? Even more than that, this morning we will have the baptism ceremony after the service, that is a beautifully picture of a spiritual newness of all who have been saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. The baptism is a picture of an amazing transformation from an old-self to a new life, after a person receives Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 5:17 said – “… if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This newness is not about an outside cosmetic facelift, but a newness of the inner heart and mind that produce a new lifestyle being liked Jesus Christ. This newness from inside out, starts with Jesus the moment you came to know Him, and from that day on, His Holy Spirit renews us daily, until the day of perfection when we all see Jesus face to face.
What kind of new lifestyle we should experience? What are its patterns? The life of a tax collector named Zacchaeus illustrates some of the principles of this new lifestyle. Zacchaeus was a wealthy chief tax collector for Rome during the time of Jesus. All the tax collectors during Jesus’ time were usually wealthy and lived a very comfortable lifestyle, because they cheated in collecting taxes of others. For that reason, the Jewish society during that time tends to look down on them as sinners, unclean, the “dirt,” and traitors because they worked for Rome, who was the oppressor of the Jews. Zacchaeus didn’t care what the people ridiculed him, as long as he had a lot of money, power and lived a comfortable life. Until one day Zacchaeus met Jesus because of his curiosity. But Zacchaeus didn’t know… on that day Jesus was seeking to meet him and changed his life forever. The Bible didn’t give us the details of the conversation between Jesus and Zacchaeus that evening, but for sure Jesus had changed his life. Zacchaeus experienced an amazing transformation of his life after he met Jesus. For sure, Jesus shared with Zacchaeus about the Gospel, the true treasure was not about money, or living a comfortable life in this world; but to know God through His Son, Jesus Himself. The treasure was not about power or prestige in this world but the forgiveness of sins, no longer under the bondage of greed, the judgment of guilt, but living freely for God and waiting for His eternal kingdom of heaven.
This inner transformation inside Zacchaeus had produced a new lifestyle that includes following changes: 1) Zacchaeus acknowledged his wrongdoings and stopped sinning. The Bible said Zacchaeus stood up in front of the crowd and promised to Jesus that from that day on, he would stop cheating anyone’s taxes, and if he did it again, he promised to pay back 4 times. Before Zacchaeus met Jesus, he thought that the cheating and lying were just a part of life; you should do that to survive, to get ahead of everyone else, to be wealthy and happy, to have a lot of money, and money means power; C’est la vie. But after Zacchaeus met Jesus, he realized it was a sin to collect taxes more than they should be charged because this was not right, this was not God’s will. Not just stop doing wrongs, Zacchaeus begun doing good to others. Zacchaeus was never care about the poor before. But after Zacchaeus met Jesus, he stood up and took half of his possessions to give it to the poor. He acted upon his new conscience following his salvation he received from Jesus that day. Zacchaeus learned something more than money, power, or prestige, he now knew what love is. He learned that the first and greatest commandment is to “love God with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his mind, and the second is like it: ‘Love his neighbor as himself.” A new lifestyle in Jesus is no longer focused on self, but others.
The new lifestyle is truly the reflection of the life of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
So have you met Jesus yet? We are here in this new place, but have you experienced a newness in your heart? Do you want a new heart for the New Year that will produce a new lifestyle, or you satisfy with your old self? Come to Jesus today, welcome Him into your heart, just as Zacchaeus did and you will have it. Have a Happy New Year!
