“Khi vào đến nhà, thấy con trẻ cùng Ma-ri, mẹ Ngài, thì sấp mình xuống mà thờ lạy Ngài; rồi bày của quí ra, dâng cho Ngài những lễ vật, là vàng, nhũ hương, và một dược.”
(On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.)
I. Famous Christmas Carol
> Christmas of 2015 is very near to us. (Mùa Giáng Sinh năm 2015 đã gần kề với mỗi người c/ta.)
> The best flavors for Christmas are always about the decorations and Christmas carols that bring so much joy and excitement to our life. (Những nét đẹp nhất của mùa Giáng Sinh luôn là sự trang trí với những cây thông với đủ mọi ánh đèn màu chớp rực rỡ và những khúc nhạc Nôen nghe thật là vui tai.)
# Christmas tree with hundred & thousand sparkling colorful lights and gifts under the tree.
# And Christmas songs just lift up our heart to the time of peace and joy.

> One of the most famous Christmas carols is "The Twelve Days of Christmas." (Một trong những bài hát Nôen vui và nổi tiếng nhất là “12 Ngày mừng Giáng Sinh.”)
# The song published in England in 1780 without music as a rhyme, later became a famous song. (Bài này được sáng tác và phổ biến từ Anh Quốc vào năm 1780, bắt đầu chỉ là một bài văn thơ theo vần, sau này đặt thành ca khúc Nô-en.)
> It is a Christmas carol that enumerates in the manner of a cumulative song, in a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas. (Một bài hát theo thể dồn lại, chồng chất lên, mỗi ngày là thêm lên một món quà hay vật gì đó cho 12 ngày của Giáng Sinh.)
1) On the First day of Christmas my true love sent to me - a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
(Ngày đầu tiên là món quà tặng một con gà gô đậu trên cây lê.)
2) On the Second day of Christmas my true love sent to me - 2 Turtle
Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. (Ngày thứ hai là 2 con chim bồ câu
được cộng vào.)
3) On the Third day of Christmas my true love sent to me - Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear
Tree. (Ngày thứ ba là thêm 3 con gà mái.)
> Then the subsequent verses follow the same pattern, each adding one new gift and repeating all the earlier gifts, so that each verse is one line longer than its predecessor: (Cứ như vậy mà mỗi ngày cộng thêm một món nữa bắt đầu từ ngày đầu tiên, cho nên càng hát thì mỗi câu càng dài hơn.)
4) Then the Calling Birds; (4 con chim hót) 5) Gold Rings; (5 cái vòng vàng) 6) Geese a-Laying; (6 con ngỗng đẻ trứng) 7) Swans a-Swimming; (7 con thiên nga bơi) 8) Maids a-Milking; (8 đứa hầu đang vắt sữa bò) 9) Ladies Dancing; (9 người phụ nữ đang nhẩy múa) 10) Lords a-Leaping (10 người đàn ông nhẩy nhót); 11) Pipers Piping (11 người thổi kèn); and finally 12) Drummers Drumming (12 vị đang đánh trống).
> The twelve days in the song are the twelve days, starting with Christmas Day. (12 Ngày bắt đầu từ ngày Giáng Sinh.)
II. Why Jesus Came?
> Even Christmas is probably the most joyful time of the year, we should never loose the real meaning of it. (Mặc dầu Giáng Sinh là thời điểm vui tươi, hân hỉ nhất trong năm, nhưng c/ta không thể nào quên được ý nghĩa chính của đại lễ này.)
> We should not get so distracted of the minor things such as gifts, footballs, food, shopping, decorations, Christmas tree, Santa Claus… But focus on the real meaning and that is the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ. (C/ta không thể nào bị lo ra với những thứ như là quà cáp, cơ hội xem football, ăn uống, mua sắm, trang trí , chụp hình với Santa Claus, nhưng phải hiểu ý nghĩa thật của Giáng Sinh chính là ngày sinh nhật của Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu.)
# There is a common phraze that summarizes the focus of Christmas, that is “Jesus is the Reason of the season.” (Có một câu nói tóm tắt đầy ý nghĩa của Giáng Sinh như sau: “Chúa Giê-xu là ý nghĩa đích thực cho mùa Giáng Sinh.” Vì nếu Chúa Giê-xu không đến và sanh ra thì đâu có Christmas ngày nay?)
> Why Jesus is the reason and why this is a very special holiday that we celebrate? (Tại sao Chúa Giê-xu là ý nghĩa chính của mùa đại lễ này mà c/ta ăn mừng?)
# Because this was the time for more than 4,000 years since Adam sinned in the garden, God promised a special gift of peace to the world; and when it was the right time, the Savior Jesus came. (Bởi vì cách hơn 4,000 năm sau khi Ađam phạm tội trong vườn thì từ lúc đó ĐCT đã hứa ban cho một vị cứu tinh, và khi đến đúng lúc thì Cứu Chúa Giê-xu đã sanh ra đời.)
1) To understand this gift we need to go back to the Bible, as it illustrates in Matthew 4:16 that the world was living in darkness after Adam sinned, until it has seen a great Light – “the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” (Để hiểu món quà quí gía này, c/ta cần trở lại Kinh Thánh trong Mathiơ 4:16 đã minh họa thế giới trông đợi gì trong suốt những năm dài từ lúc tổ phụ loài người phạm tội – “Dân ấy ngồi chỗ tối tăm, đã thấy ánh sáng lớn; Và trên những kẻ ngồi trong miền và dưới bóng sự chết, thì Ánh Sáng đã mọc lên.”)
a) Darkness here is a symbol of the consequence and judgment of sin that is the permanent and eternal death. (Thường bóng tối ám chỉ hậu quả và sự phán xét của tội lỗi chính là sự chết đời đời trong lửa địa ngục.)
# In Matthew 8:12 Jesus once described hell as – “But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Có lần chính Chúa Giê-xu dùng “bóng tối” để diễn tả địa ngục là nơi tối tăm ở ngoài thiên đàng, không có sự sáng vinh hiển của ĐCT như sau: “Nhưng các con bổn quốc sẽ bị liệng ra chốn tối tăm ở ngoài, tại đó sẽ có khóc lóc và nghiến răng.”)
b) The great Light represents the hope when a Savior came to rescue mankind out of the judgement of sins and redeem us back to God. (Còn Ánh Sáng lớn đây chính là niềm hy vọng cho nhân laọi khi Đấng Cứu Chuộc đến giải thoát loài người ra khỏi ách phán xét của tội lỗi và chuộc c/ta lại cho ĐCT.)
# The world is liked a vast crowd of people, shuffing, hustling and pushing around in a huge dark room without finding a way to escape, until the great light turns on and shows the people the door to get out. (Tưởng tượng thế gian giống như một đám đông người đang chen chút, xô đẩy, chen lấn nhau trong một căn phòng tối mịt, ai nấy cố gắng mò mẩm đi tìm một con đường thoát, nhưng chẳng ai tìm được, cho đến khi ánh sáng bật lên và chiếu rọi vào đám đông, chỉ dẫn họ cánh cửa ở đâu để thoát ra khỏi, và cánh cửa duy nhất đó chính là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu.)
2) How did this Savior Jesus bring us peace and hope? (Đấng Cứu Thế đã làm gì để ban cho c/ta sự hy vọng?)
> In Romans 3:23 said that our destination is doomed, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Trong Rôma 3:23 chép rõ định mệnh của mỗi người c/ta là sự diệt vong hư mất, vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội thiếu mất sự vinh hiển của Chúa.)
> There is nothing we can do to turn this curse around. We are hopeless. We are destined to perish. (C/ta không ai làm chi được để tự đổi định mệnh này được. C/ta hết thảy sống trong tuyệt vọng.)
> Until the Savior Jesus came, was born in a manger, and later to die on the cross paying all the debts of our sins. (Cho đến khi Cứu Chúa Giê-xu từ trời đến, sanh ra trong máng cỏ, mặc lấy thể xác của loài người, để rồi lớn lên một ngày đã hy sinh chịu chết trên cây thập tự, để trả gía mọi món nợ tội lỗi của tôi và bạn.)
# That was why John the Baptist once introduced Jesus as a Lamb of God in John 1:29, meaning that He became a sin sacrifice for us – “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Đó là lý do tại sao Giăng báptít khi giới thiệu Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu, ông đã nói: “Qua ngày sau, Giăng thấy Đức Chúa Jêsus đến cùng mình, thì nói rằng: Kìa, Chiên con của Đức Chúa Trời, là Đấng cất tội lỗi thế gian đi.” Chiên Con đây biểu hiệu cho của lễ chuộc tội phải có để trả món nợ tội lỗi của mỗi người c/ta.)
> So that all who believe in Him, their sins are forgiven and they are no longer heading to the lake of fire in eternal darkness, but the kingdom of heaven. (Để cho bất cứ ai bằng lòng tin nhận Ngài thì tội của người đó được xóa sạch, và định mệnh của người đó cũng thay đổi từ đến chỗ địa ngục, nhưng nay trông đợi nước thiên đàng.)
3) Jesus came to die for our sins so that we can be reconciled back to God and inherit His kingdom one day. (Chúa Giê-xu đến chết chuộc tội lỗi cho c/ta mà còn làm c/ta được hòa thuận lại với ĐCT, và có đủ điều kiện công bình để hưởng nước thiên đàng một ngày.)
> We used to be God’s enemies and waiting for His wrath, but since Jesus took all God’s wrath for us on the cross, and as we are forgiven, we become His children as John 1:12 said – “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (Ngày trước c/ta là kẻ thù của ĐCT, chỉ chờ đợi sự thạnh nộ của ĐCT, nhưng bây giờ tội lỗi đã được xóa sạch bởi huyết của Chúa Giê-xu đổ ra trên cây thập tự, thì nay c/ta trở nên làm con cái của ĐCT, như trong Giăng 1:12 có chép – “Nhưng hễ ai đã nhận Ngài, thì Ngài ban cho quyền phép trở nên con cái Đức Chúa Trời, là ban cho những kẻ tin danh Ngài.”)
> All of this is the plan of salvation that God wants to save everyone in the world, and this plan begun at the first Christmas when Jesus Christ was born. (Tất cả đây chính là chương trình cứu chuộc của ĐCT muốn cứu mọi người, và chương trình này bắt đầu từ Giáng Sinh đầu tiên, khi Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu sanh ra đời.)
III. Prepare our Heart
> Since Christmas is the time we celebrate Jesus’ birthday, we must have a birthday gift for Him. (Vì Giáng Sinh là ngày sinh nhật của Chúa Giê-xu, c/ta phải có món quà sinh nhật cho Ngài.)
# When you want to buy a gift for someone, the first thing you always do is to ask what does that person likes. So what does Jesus like? (Mỗi khi mua một món quà cho ai, thường c/ta phải trước hết tự hỏi xem người đó thích cái gì? Như vậy thì Chúa Giê-xu thích gì đây?)
# He likes our sincere and cleaned heart because He himself is holy and perfect. (Chúa thích một tấm lòng thánh sạch bởi vì cá tánh của Ngài là thánh khiết.)
> If that is what Jesus wants for His birthday gift then we should prepare our heart to be right with God, offering a gift to Him? (Nếu đó là điều Chúa muốn, vậy thì c/ta mỗi người cần sửa soạn tấm lòng của mình thật xứng đáng, để làm quà dâng cho Chúa trong lễ Giáng Sinh năm nay.)
> If you notice that there are exactly 12 more days before Christmas. (Nếu quí vị để ý thì thấy từ đây cho đến Giáng Sinh là đúng 12 ngày.)
> I am not suggesting that we should learn how to sing the “12 days of Christmas” carol, or buying 12 grand gifts to Jesus, but let’s dedicate the next 12 days to prepare 12 things we can do each day from now until Christmas to prepare our heart as a gift to Jesus. (Tôi không có muốn nói là c/ta hãy tập hát ca khúc “12 Ngày mừng Giáng Sinh,” hay chọn mua cho Chúa 12 món quà, nhưng mỗi ngày trong vòng 12 ngày tới đây, hãy sửa soạn tấm lòng thật thánh sạch để chuẩn bị kỷ niệm ngày Chúa đã Giáng Sinh.)
1) First day (today Sunday - 13th), we must do a throughly self-exam, repent and confess any of our sins to God. (CONFESSING SINS) (Ngày đầu tiên là hôm nay, trước hết c/ta hãy tự xét lấy chính mình, ăn năn và xưng tội với Chúa.)
# 1 John 1:9 reminds us God’s faithfulness – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 Giăng 1:9 nhắc c/ta về sự thành tín của Chúa –“Còn nếu chúng ta xưng tội mình, thì Ngài là thành tín công bình để tha tội cho chúng ta, và làm cho chúng ta sạch mọi điều gian ác.”)
> Before confessing sins we must recognize sins as God defines it in His words, confessing sins to God, and repent meaning to turn away from them. (Trước hết c/ta phải nhận tội như Chúa đã định trong lời của Ngài, xưng tội ra và ăn năn nghĩa là nhất quyết từ bỏ những việc ác nghịch cùng Chúa.)
> Not just confessing the sins of commission including the secret sins just between you and God, but don’t forget the sin of omission if we really mean business with Him in this first step. (Xưng tội không phải chỉ những tội mình đã cố ý làm, nhưng còn là những tội vô tình c/ta đang phạm nữa, có khi gọi là tội “tỉnh bơ,” những tội mà Chúa Thánh Linh cáo trách mà mình cứ gỉa bộ như nai tơ.)
> Our relationship between each of us and God has to be right to celebrate a peaceful Christmas. (Mối liên hệ giữa c/ta với Chúa phải được thông suốt thì Giáng Sinh mới có ý nghĩa.)
2) Second day (Monday – 14th), ask God to help you to forgive everyone, mending all relationship with others, because Christmas is about peace of God that can overwhelm us in order to overcome all bitterness. (FORGIVING) (Ngày thứ hai, c/ta cần xét đến mối liên hệ xích mích giữa mình với mọi người khác. C/ta cần nhất tâm tha thứ mọi kẻ phạm nghịch cùng mình, hàn gắn lại cách cư xử tốt đẹp với nhau vì Chúa đã đối xử nhân từ với chính mình.)
# Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (“Hãy ở với nhau cách nhân từ, đầy dẫy lòng thương xót, tha thứ nhau như Đức Chúa Trời đã tha thứ anh em trong Đấng Christ vậy.”)
> Say them by names and make a commitment to erase all their debts, meaning that you will never bring their faults/debts back ever. (Xưng tên từng người ra trước mặt ra với Chúa và hứa nguyện xóa bỏ mọi món nợ của người bên kia, hứa sẽ không bao giờ moi móc lỗi lầm của họ ra nữa.)
> Of course, forgiveness can only be completed by 2 parties, those who recognize their faults and ask for forgiveness; at the same time, the others must be ready to forgive. (Đương nhiên mối liên hệ chỉ được hàn gắn lại khi cả 2 bên đều hiệp với nhau, kẻ nhận biết lỗi cần nên xin lỗi, còn người bên kia phải sẵn sàng tha thứ cho.)
> Our relationship with each others must be right to celebrate a joyful Christmas. (Mối liên hệ với nhau phải được giải quyết hàn gắn lại thì c/ta mới huởng một Giáng Sinh vui tươi.)
3) Third day (Tuesday – 15th), spend time to pray for the lost: our friends, relatives, neighbors, the community that many will come to understand the meaning of Christmas and open their heart to receive the gift. (PRAYING FOR THE LOST) (Ngày thứ ba, c/ta để thì giờ ra để cầu nguyện cho bạn bè, người thân, hàng xóm, và cộng đồng đến hiểu ý nghĩa thật của Giáng Sinh mà mở lòng nhận món quà cứu chuộc ban cho sẵn trong Cứu Chúa Giê-xu.)
# Romans 10:1 describes the heart of the aspostle Paul wanting so much to see his people to be saved – “Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” (Trong Rôma 10:1 diễn tả tấm lòng của Phaolô như sau: “Hỡi anh em, sự ước ao trong lòng tôi và lời tôi vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cầu nguyện cùng Đức Chúa Trời, ấy là cho họ được cứu.”)
> We must have the same heart for the Vietnamese community in Baton Rouge? (Đây cũng phải là tấm lòng của c/ta cho người việt ở thành phố Baton Rouge và những vùng phụ cận này?)
> Name the lost people one by one and pray for their soul. (Dâng lên Chúa tên từng người mà cầu xin cho họ.)
4) Fourth day (Wednesday - 16th), prepare to make connections and share the story of Christmas with them. (SHARING THE STORY) (Ngày thứ tư, c/ta đặt kế hoạch để có thể liên hệ, liên lạc với họ mà chia xẻ tin mừng Giáng Sinh.)
# Romans 10:14-15 reminds us how the world is coming to be saved – “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Trong Rôma 10:14-15 nhắc c/ta cần làm gì để họ được cứu? “Nhưng họ chưa tin Ngài thì kêu cầu sao được? Chưa nghe nói về Ngài thì làm thể nào mà tin? Nếu chẳng ai rao giảng, thì nghe làm sao? 15 Lại nếu chẳng ai được sai đi, thì rao giảng thể nào? như có chép rằng: Những bàn chân kẻ rao truyền tin Lành là tốt đẹp biết bao!”)
> Ask God to provide you the opportunites daily to share the story. (Cầu xin Chúa mở đường ban cho mình có cơ hội chia xẻ câu chuyện Giáng Sinh.)
# You can keep couple colorful Christmas tracts to share the good news and invite them to the Christmas service. (Quí vị có thể dùng báo Hướng Đi hay lá thư mời với câu chuyện Giáng Sinh.)
# Invite someone to your home for a dinner? (Quí vị có thể mời khách đến nhà dùng bữa?)
# Use e-mails, facebook – whatever technologies you know and have. (Dùng những phương cách điện tử ngày nay nhắm đến 1-2 người bạn và mời đến dự.)
5) Fifth day (Thursday - 17th), pray for this year special Christmas service, scheduled for Saturday 19th evening staring at 6:30 p.m. (CHRISTMAS SERVICE) (Ngày thứ năm, để thì giờ cầu nguyện cho chương trình truyền giảng Giáng Sinh, xếp đặt vào thứ Bảy lúc 6:30 chiều. Việc truyền giảng là việc Chúa đã làm và trao cho hội thánh làm tiếp cho đến khi Ngài trở lại.)
# Mark 16:15 reminds us of Jesus’ mission and now it is our mission – “Jesus said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (“Chúa Giê-xu phán cùng các sứ đồ rằng: Hãy đi khắp thế gian, giảng Tin Lành cho mọi người.”)
> Pray for the special Christmas service on Saturday: Songs & message. (Cầu nguyện cho các bài hát và sứ điệp truyền giảng được bày tỏ rõ ràng.)
> Pray for the special speaker – MS Nguyen v. Hue. (Cầu nguyện cho diễn gỉa.)
> Pray for the decision time. (Cầu nguyện cho thời giờ kêu gọi, nhiều người mở lòng tin.)
6) Sixth day (Friday - 18th), pray for those who serve from planning, hosting, cooking, singing, cleaning, decorating… Everything will bring glory to Jesus. (Ngày thứ sáu, cầu nguyện cho những người lo chương trình, trang trí, nấu nướng, dọn dẹp, tiếp khách… ai nấy hòa hợp mà chung sức làm mọi việc với mục đích đem vinh hiển đến cho Chúa c/ta.)
> Pray that they can be healthy to serve. Pray that God bless their families. (Cầu nguyện cho sức khỏe của mỗi người, xin Chúa ban phước cho mọi gia đình con cái Chúa.)
> Pray for healings so many can come and celebrate Christmas. (Cầu nguyện cho một số anh chị em được lành bịnh để đến dự lễ Giáng Sinh.)
# Ask a practical question - what can I do to get involved? (BE A PART OF THE CELEBRATION) (Hãy tự hỏi coi xem chính mình có thể dự phần chi được trong những công việc sửa soạn này?)
# Galatians 6:2 encourages all of us to do what? “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Trong Galati 6:2 nhắc mỗi người nên làm gì? “Hãy mang lấy gánh nặng cho nhau, như vậy anh em sẽ làm trọn luật pháp của Đấng Christ.”)
7) Seventh day (Saturday - 19th), prepare to do follow-up. (FOLLOW-UP) (Ngày thứ bảy, chuẩn bị để chăm sóc những người sẽ đến tin nhận Chúa trong buổi lễ Giáng Sinh.)
> Come to Christmas service with an expectation that some will be saved; and if some are saved what should I do next? (Đến dự lễ với tấm lòng trông đợi Chúa sẽ cứu một số người, và sau đó tự hỏi tôi sẽ làm gì để giúp đỡ những người mới này?)
# Matthew 28:19-20 nhắc đại mạng lệnh – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mathiơ 28:19-20 nhắc c/ta đại mạng lệnh của Chúa là gì? “Vậy, hãy đi dạy dỗ muôn dân, hãy nhân danh Đức Cha, Đức Con, và Đức Thánh Linh mà làm phép báp tem cho họ, 20 và dạy họ giữ hết cả mọi điều mà ta đã truyền cho các ngươi. Và nầy, ta thường ở cùng các ngươi luôn cho đến tận thế.”)
> Rememeber Jesus’ great commission is not just leading them to faith, but nurturing them to become His disciples. (Đại mạnh lệnh của Chúa không chỉ hướng dẫn người ta tin Chúa thôi, nhưng trở nên môn đồ của Ngài nữa.)
> Can I become their “buddy” in the same age group? (Nếu một trong những người sẽ tin hợp với lứa tuổi mình thì tôi có sẵn sàng làm bạn hướng dẫn họ bước đi trong Chúa không?)
> If you are the Sunday School teacher, what should you do to enlist them into Sunday School? Get their address, plan the following up and connected visitations. (Nếu là giáo viên trường Chúa Nhật, c/ta có sẵn sàng tiếp rước, thăm viếng những người mới tin không?)
8) Eight day (Sunday - 20th), prepare a special gift for Jesus. (BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR JESUS) (Ngày thứ tám, sửa soạn một món quà Giáng Sinh cho Chúa.)
> Imitate what the wisemen from the East did as recorded in Matthew 2:11 – “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” (Bắt chước các nhà thông thái từ Đông phương đã mang quà cho Chúa ngày xưa như có chép trong Mathiơ 2:11 – “Khi vào đến nhà, thấy con trẻ cùng Ma-ri, mẹ Ngài, thì sấp mình xuống mà thờ lạy Ngài; rồi bày của quí ra, dâng cho Ngài những lễ vật, là vàng, nhũ hương, và một dược.”)

12 Days of Preparation Before Christmas
Matthew 2:11
“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”
Christmas of 2015 is very near to us. The best flavors for Christmas are always about the decorations and Christmas carols that bring so much joy and excitement to our life. One of the most famous Christmas carols is "The Twelve Days of Christmas. The song published in England in 1780 without music as a rhyme, later became a famous song. It is a Christmas carol that enumerates in the manner of a cumulative song, in a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas. On the First day of Christmas my true love sent to me - a Partridge in a Pear Tree. On the Second day of Christmas my true love sent to me - 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. On the Third day of Christmas my true love sent to me - Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. Then the subsequent verses follow the same pattern, each adding one new gift and repeating all the earlier gifts, so that each verse is one line longer than its predecessor. Then there are 4 Calling Birds; 5 Gold Rings; 6 Geese a-Laying; 7 Swans a-Swimming; 8 Maids a-Milking; 9 Ladies Dancing; 10 Lords a-Leaping; 11 Pipers Piping; and finally 12 Drummers Drumming. The twelve days in the song are the twelve days, starting with Christmas Day.
Even Christmas is probably the most joyful time of the year; we should never lose the real meaning of it. We should not get so distracted of the minor things such as gifts, footballs, food, shopping, decorations, Christmas tree, Santa Claus… But focus on the real meaning and that is the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ. There is a common phrase that summarizes the focus of Christmas that is “Jesus is the Reason of the season. Why Jesus is the reason and why this is a very special holiday that we celebrate? Because this was the time for more than 4,000 years since Adam sinned in the garden, God promised a special gift of peace to the world; and when it was the right time, the Savior Jesus came. To understand this gift we need to go back to the Bible, as it illustrates in Matthew 4:16 that the world was living in darkness after Adam sinned, until it has seen a great Light. Darkness here is a symbol of the consequence and judgment of sin that is the permanent and eternal death. The great Light represents the hope when a Savior came to rescue mankind out of the judgement of sins and redeem us back to God. How did this Savior Jesus bring us peace and hope? First, our destination is doomed, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” There is nothing we can do to turn this curse around. We are hopeless. We are destined to perish, until the Savior Jesus came, was born in a manger, and later to die on the cross paying all the debts of our sins. So that all who believe in Him, their sins are forgiven and they are no longer heading to the lake of fire in eternal darkness, but the kingdom of heaven. Jesus came to die for our sins so that we can be reconciled back to God and inherit His kingdom one day. We used to be God’s enemies and waiting for His wrath, but since Jesus took all God’s wrath for us on the cross, and as we are forgiven, we become His children. All of this is the plan of salvation that God wants to save everyone in the world, and this plan begun at the first Christmas when Jesus Christ was born.
Since Christmas is the time we celebrate Jesus’ birthday, we must have a birthday gift for Him. So what does Jesus like? He likes our sincere and cleaned heart because He himself is holy and perfect. If that is what Jesus wants for His birthday gift then we should prepare our heart to be right with God, offering a gift to Him? If you notice that there are exactly 12 more days before Christmas. I am not suggesting that we should learn how to sing the “12 days of Christmas” carol, or buying 12 grand gifts to Jesus, but let’s dedicate the next 12 days to prepare 12 things we can do each day from now until Christmas to prepare our heart as a gift to Jesus.
1) First day (today Sunday - 13th), we must do a thoroughly self-exam, repent and confess any of our sins to God. (CONFESSING SINS) 1 John 1:9 reminds us God’s faithfulness – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Before confessing sins we must recognize sins as God defines it in His words, confessing sins to God, and repent meaning to turn away from them. Not just confessing the sins of commission including the secret sins just between you and God, but don’t forget the sin of omission if we really mean business with Him in this first step.
2) Second day (Monday – 14th), ask God to help you to forgive everyone, mending all relationship with others, because Christmas is about peace of God that can overwhelm us in order to overcome all bitterness. (FORGIVING) Ephesians 4:32 says – “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Say them by names and make a commitment to erase all their debts, meaning that you will never bring their faults/debts back ever. Of course, forgiveness can only be completed by 2 parties, those who recognize their faults and ask for forgiveness; at the same time, the others must be ready to forgive.
3) Third day (Tuesday – 15th), spend time to pray for the lost: our friends, relatives, neighbors, and the community that many will come to understand the meaning of Christmas and open their heart to receive the gift. (PRAYING FOR THE LOST) Romans 10:1 describes the heart of the apostle Paul wanting so much to see his people to be saved – “Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” We must have the same heart for the Vietnamese community in Baton Rouge. Name the lost people one by one and pray for their soul.
4) Fourth day (Wednesday - 16th), prepare to make connections and share the story of Christmas with them. (SHARING THE STORY) Romans 10:14-15 reminds us how the world is coming to be saved – “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Ask God to provide you the opportunities daily to share the story. You can keep couple colorful Christmas tracts to share the good news and invite them to the Christmas service. Invite someone to your home for a dinner? Use e-mails, Facebook – whatever technologies you know and have.
5) Fifth day (Thursday - 17th), pray for this year special Christmas service, scheduled for Saturday 19th evening staring at 6:30 p.m. (CHRISTMAS SERVICE) Mark 16:15 reminds us of Jesus’ mission and now it is our mission – “Jesus said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Pray for the special Christmas service on Saturday: Songs & message. Pray for the special speaker. Pray for the decision time.
6) Sixth day (Friday - 18th), pray for those who serve from planning, hosting, cooking, singing, cleaning, decorating… Everything will bring glory to Jesus. Pray that they can be healthy to serve. Pray that God bless their families. Pray for healings so many can come and celebrate Christmas. Ask a practical question - what can I do to get involved? (BE A PART OF THE CELEBRATION) Galatians 6:2 encourages all of us to do what? “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
7) Seventh day (Saturday - 19th), prepare to do follow-up. (FOLLOW-UP) Come to Christmas service with an expectation that some will be saved; and if some are saved what should I do next? Matthew 28:19-20 reminds us the great commission as – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Remember that Jesus’ great commission is not just leading them to faith, but nurturing them to become His disciples.
8) Eight day (Sunday - 20th), prepare a special gift for Jesus. (BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR JESUS) Imitate what the wisemen from the East did as recorded in Matthew 2:11 – “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.
