“Vậy, anh em hoặc ăn, hoặc uống, hay là làm sự chi khác,
hãy vì sự vinh hiển Đức Chúa Trời mà làm.”
(So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.)
I. New Year Motto
> Today is a very special Sunday, because it is the first Sunday of 2016 (Sáng nay là Chúa Nhật thật đặc biệt, vì là ngày Chúa Nhật đầu tiên của một năm mới.)
> 2015 passed away, New Year is here (Năm cũ 2015 đã trôi qua đi vào lịch sử, và năm mới 2016 đã đến với mỗi người chúng ta.)
> So, have you made any plan or resolutions for the New Year? (Bạn đã có những hoặch định hay chương trình gì đặc biệt cho năm mới này chưa?)
# The most common resolutions that many Americans always make are a) to lose a little weight and b) for some to quit smoking, so they can live healthier and longer, and c) others to spend more time with families. (Những kế hoạch đầu năm mà nhiều người Mỹ thường hay đặt ra đó là mong được xuống cân, cho một số người thì muốn bỏ hút thuốc lá, vì ai cũng muốn sống lâu và khỏe mạnh; hay một số khác thì cố gắng để dành nhiều thì giờ hơn cho gia đình trong năm nay.)
# For the commercial businesses, many companies already make new plans to improve their profit margins for this New Year. (Các công ti thì cũng đã có những kế hoạch mới đề ra, để tăng thêm lợi tức trong năm mới này.)
> What about your spiritual life, have you set any goal for the New Year? Do you plan to be a better disciple of Jesus? Do you want to know God more this New Year? (Còn quí vị con cái Chúa ở đây thì sao? Quí vị có đặt mục tiêu gì cho năm mới chưa? Có chương trình để trở nên một môn đồ hữu ích hơn cho Chúa Giê-xu không? Có mong được thông biết Chúa hơn không?)
> If you do not have any resolution yet, I hope that the sermon this morning can help you to set a spiritual motto for the New Year. (Nếu chưa, mong rằng bài giảng sáng nay sẽ giúp quí vị biết xếp đặt một “khẩu hiệu/chí hướng” cho đời sống tâm linh của mình trong năm mới này.)
> Every company has a motto/slogan to help people paying attention to their products, or the employees to focus on their company mission. (Hầu hết mỗi công ti đều đặt ra những “khẩu hiệu hay,” để giúp mọi người để ý đến sản phẩm của họ, hay giúp các nhân công luôn chú tâm đến mục tiêu chính của công ti mình.)
# Some of the famous mottos are: 1) For Nike shoes: "Just Do It," to encourage everyone to stay in shape by just start exercising, and when people exercise they will need shoes; 2) For Apple computer: "Think Different" to promote visionaries who can creatively change the world, and their computer can help them to do that; 3) McDonald's fast food restaurant: "I'm Lovin' It" to inspire everyone to try their food; 4) Verizon cell phone: "Can You Hear Me Now? Good," to advertise their best cellphone options, and services; 5) M&M candies: "Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands" to advertise their candy hard shell, that keeps chocolate from melting all over you. (Một vài những khẩu hiệu nổi tiếng c/ta thấy qua những quảng cáo của các sản phẩm như của giày Nike, máy điện toán Apple, đồ ăn lẹ của nhà hàng McDonald, hãng điện thoại Verizon, hay là kẹo M&M.)
> For our spiritual life, we can use God’s word to set a motto for the New Year. (Cho đời sống tâm linh, c/ta cũng có thể dùng lời Chúa làm khẩu hiệu, mục tiêu, chí hướng bước đi cho năm mới.)
> 1 Corinthians 10:31 scripture is a good one to help us focusing in everything that we do in this New year is for no other reason then to glorify God – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Côrinhtô 10:31 là một câu Kinh Thánh rất hay để c/ta dùng làm khẩu hiệu, điểm nhắm, hầu cho tất cả mọi việc c/ta làm trong năm mới này, hoặc ăn hoặc uống, hay bất cứ điều gì không ngoài mục tiêu là để làm sáng danh vinh hiển của Chúa – “Vậy, anh em hoặc ăn, hoặc uống, hay là làm sự chi khác, hãy vì sự vinh hiển Đức Chúa Trời mà làm.”)
II. God’s Glory
1) To understand this purpose, we need to know why were we created in the beginning? (Muốn hiểu khẩu hiệu tâm linh này, trước hết c/ta cần biết tại sao loài người đã được dựng nên từ lúc ban đầu?)
> We are created by God for at least two main reasons: (Loài người được dựng nên bởi ĐCT với tối thiểu hai mục đích chính sau đây:)
a) To enjoy God forever in heaven. (Có mối liên hệ đời đời với Ngài và hưởng nước thiên đàng.)
b) We are created to glorify Him. (Làm sáng danh vinh hiển của Chúa)
> God is self-existed, and independent that means He does not need anything, as said in Acts 17:24-25 – “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.” God does not need to create us to bring Him glory; but He did it out of His own will, desire and kindness. (ĐCT là Đấng tự có, và hằng hữu, và Ngài không cần dựng c/ta lên để đem sự vinh hiển cho Chúa; Nhưng Chúa sáng tạo mọi vật theo ý muốn tốt lành của Ngài.)
> So if we want to glorify God in everything we do this New Year then we first need to understand what does the glory of God mean? (Như vậy muốn làm sáng danh Chúa điều kiện đầu tiên c/ta phải hiểu sự vinh hiển của Chúa là gì?)
# I believe that one of the main reasons why our life sometimes does not glorify God is because we do not understand what God’s glory is. (Thiết nghĩ rằng đôi khi đời sống của c/ta không làm sáng danh Chúa, lý do là bởi vì c/ta chưa hiểu sự vinh hiển của Ngài là gì.)
> Many things we did, we thought that we glorifed God, but actually we bragged about ourselves or someone else’s name, or even for our own selfish desire, just as the unbelievers. (Nhiều việc c/ta làm, c/ta tưởng mình làm sáng danh Chúa, nhưng thật sự mình đang tâng bốc khoe mình hay chỉ để thoả mãn tư dục xác thịt, cho cái bụng của mình, chẳng khác chi với người ngoại đạo.)
# In Phillipians 3:19 the apostle Paul spoke about the life goal of unbelievers – “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.” (Philíp 3:19 – “Sự cuối cùng của họ là hư mất; họ lấy bụng mình làm chúa mình, và lấy sự xấu hổ của mình làm vinh hiển, chỉ tư tưởng về các việc thế gian mà thôi.”)
> When we try to do things for God based on our fleshly way of thinking, wordly reasoning, or our ancestor’s traditions, we do not glorify God. (Khi c/ta nói mình làm cho Chúa dựa theo tánh xác thịt, thói tục của thế gian, hay phong tục tập quán của con người, c/ta không làm sáng danh Chúa.)
2) The word “glory” expresses the greatness and awesomeness of God, beyond human capacity to comprehend. (Chữ “vinh hiển” nói đến quyền phép vĩ đại, cao qúy, lạ lùng, đáng kính sợ của Chúa vượt ngoài sự hiểu biết của loài người.)
> God is Spirit, He has no dimensions, He does not have a shoe’s size; We cannot see Him with our human eyes, but with the eyes of faith we can observe His greatness, His glory through the things that God is doing. (ĐCT là Thần Linh, Ngài không có cỡ; C/ta không thể thấy Ngài bằng mắt trần, nhưng với con mắt đức tin, c/ta có thể nhận biết sự vĩ đại cao qúy của Chúa qua những việc Ngài làm.)
a) First, His creation is great and awesome that whose mind can comprehend all of it? (Sự sáng tạo lạ lùng và vĩ đại của các từng trời từ Chúa thì có ai hiểu hết được không?)
# Psalm 8:1 – “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.” (Tác gỉa Thi thiên 8:1 tuyên bố - “Hỡi Đức Giê-hô-va là Chúa chúng tôi, Danh Chúa được sáng cả trên khắp trái đất biết bao; Sự oai nghi Chúa hiện ra trên các từng trời!)
# Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Tác gỉa Thi Thiên 19:1 tuyên bố - “Các từng trời rao truyền sự vinh hiển của Đức Chúa Trời, bầu trời giải tỏ công việc tay Ngài làm.”)
# Can any scientist, or astrologer comprehend the vast space and all the galaxies? (Có nhà bác học hay chiêm tinh học nào có thể thấu hiểu hết cả vũ trụ bao la, hay các khối ngân hà xoay vần trong không gian được không?)
# In Job 38:4-5 – God humbled Job and challenged if he could understand His works in creating the heaven and earth – “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?” (Trong Giốp 38:4-5 – ĐCT thách hỏi ong Giốp có hiểu được sự vinh hiển của Ngài – “Khi ta đặt nền trái đất, thì ngươi ở đâu? Nếu ngươi thông sáng, hãy tỏ bày đi. 5 Ai đã định độ lượng nó, Và giăng dây mực trên nó, ngươi có biết chăng?”)
b) Secondly, His incarnation at the first Christmas when the Son of God became a baby laying in the manger revealed God’s glory and awesomeness. (Sự đầu thai của Con ĐCT thành người trong Giáng Sinh đầu tiên bày tỏ sự vinh hiển tột đỉnh của Chúa.)
# John 1:14 witnesses this glory in the incarnated Son of God – “The Word (Jesus Christ) became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (Trong Giăng 1:14 làm chứng – “Ngôi Lời (Chúa Giê-xu) đã trở nên xác thịt, ở giữa chúng ta, đầy ơn và lẽ thật; chúng ta đã ngắm xem sự vinh hiển của Ngài, thật như vinh hiển của Con một đến từ nơi Cha.”)
> Why did the incarnation of God’s Son show His glory? (Tại sao sự sanh ra đời của Con Trời bày tỏ sự vinh hiển của Chúa?)
> In the beginning, we were created in God’s image, not physically, but having some of His attributes that reflect God’s glory. (Bởi vì từ lúc ban đầu loài người được ĐCT dựng nên giống hình ảnh của Ngài, không theo thể xác thịt, nhưng loài người chứa đựng và phản ảnh những đặc tánh vinh hiển trọn vẹn của Chúa.)
> But sin distorted this image and caused a separation between sinners and holy and perfect God. (Nhưng tội lỗi đã làm méo mó, lệch lạc, nhem nhuốc, hình ảnh đó và hậu quả là con người tội lỗi đã bị phân rẽ khỏi ĐCT thánh khiết, vì c/ta không còn sự vinh hiển trọn vẹn nữa.)
# For that reason, in Romans 3:23 declares that we are short of the glory of God – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Vì vậy mà trong Rôma 3:23 chép rõ: “vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội, thiếu mất sự vinh hiển của Đức Chúa Trời.”)
# Have you ever taken a picture with your Iphone and it turned out to be blurry and finally you had to delete it? (Bạn có bao giờ chụp một tấm ảnh mà thấy thật là mờ mịt không rõ, và cuối cùng bạn phải bỏ tấm ảnh đó và chụp lại không?)
> Even through this tragedy, the God of mercy did not change His mind/His purpose why He created us, so He sent a Savior, His Son Jesus Christ to redeem us back unto Himself, to restore the glorious image of God in us. (Thảm kịch do tội lỗi gây nên không thay đổi ý của Chúa là Đấng nhơn từ, nên Ngài sai chính Con mình giáng thế để cứu chuộc c/ta lại cho Chúa.)
> The Son of God, Jesus Christ is different from us, because in Hebrews 1:3 stated that “The Son is the radiance of (full) God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Con ĐCT là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu khác với c/ta vì Ngài có sự vinh hiển trọn vẹn của Chúa, không bị nhem bởi tội lỗi, nên có thể làm sạch mọi tội lỗi của c/ta – “Con là sự chói sáng của sự vinh hiển Đức Chúa Trời và hình bóng của bản thể Ngài, lấy lời có quyền phép Ngài nâng đỡ muôn vật; sau khi Con làm xong sự sạch tội, bèn ngồi bên hữu Đấng tôn nghiêm ở trong nơi rất cao.”)
# And at the right time, Jesus Christ was born into the world to die on the cross, paid all the debts of our sins that we could not pay, declared all who believe are righteous, created a new image of God in us, gave us the power to become Gods’ children, and promised us the kingdom of heaven. (Và đúng thời điểm, Cứu Chúa Giê-xu đã sanh ra đời, chết trên cây thập tự, trả sạch hết mọi món nợ tội lỗi của c/ta mà c/ta không thể tự làm sạch, làm chứng mọi kẻ tin là công bình thỏa mãn mọi sự đóan phạt của luật pháp Chúa, nhận quyền phép được làm con cái ĐCT, và có lời hứa về cơ nghiệp của nước thiên đàng.)
> To the world, the cross is foolish; but to God, it is His glory reflecting His attributes and characters of love, mercy, grace, righteousness, and faithfulness. (Đối với thế gian, thập tự là một việc điên dại, nhưng với Chúa, thập tự biểu lộ/phản ảnh sự khôn ngoan và những đặc tánh vinh hiển trọn vẹn của Chúa.)
> So, the glory of God is the display of His greatness, awesomeness, splendor, majesty, liked a “bright and glorious light” shining through the things that God does. (Như vậy, sự vinh hiển của Chúa có thể hiểu như một ánh sáng lộng lẫy, rực rỡ phô bày những đặc tánh của sự oai nghi, huy hoàng, lớn lao, vĩ đại của Chúa.)
# Psalms 104:1-2a helps us to see His glory as light – “Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. 2 The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment;” (Thi Thiên 104:1-2a giúp c/ta thấy sự vinh hiển của Chúa tỏa ra như ánh sáng – “Hỡi linh hồn ta, khá ngợi khen Đức Giê-hô-va! Hỡi Giê-hô-va, Đức Chúa Trời tôi, Chúa thật lớn lạ kỳ. Mặc sự sang trọng và oai nghi! 2 Chúa bao phủ mình bằng ánh sáng khác nào bằng cái áo.”)
# If you remember during the first Christmas, when the angels appeared to the shepherds and announced the birth of the Savior, what was shining that caused them to be fearful in Luke 2:9? “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” (Nhớ khi Chúa sanh ra đời và có thiên sứ đến báo tin cho các mục đồng thì điều gì chiếu sáng làm cho họ sợ hãi? “Một thiên sứ của Chúa đến gần họ, và sự vinh hiển của Chúa chói lòa xung quanh, họ rất sợ hãi.”)
> In Revelation 21:23 previews for us to see the future in heaven where there will be no more light, but we do not need any light, because the glory of God will shine upon us – “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” (Trong Khải Huyền 21:23 cho c/ta thấy trước trên thiên đàng, c/ta sẽ không còn cần ánh sáng nào nữa, tại vì sao? “Thành cũng không cần mặt trời, mặt trăng để soi sáng; vì sự vinh hiển của Đức Chúa Trời chói lói cho, và Chiên Con là ngọn đèn của thành.”)
III. Living a Life that Glorifies God
> So in everything God is doing, His glory reflects or shines His attributes and characters; then in everything we do in our life should reflect or shine God’s glory because He lives inside each of us. (Trong mọi sự ĐCT làm, bày tỏ/tỏa sáng bản tánh vinh hiển của Chúa; vậy thì trong mọi sự c/ta làm, hoặc ăn, hoặc uống, cũng phải tỏa sang, bày tỏ bản tánh oai nghi của Chúa, vì Ngài sống trong mỗi người c/ta.)
> Can you put this thinking in your mind for this New Year? (Quí vị có thể đặt ý nghĩ này trong trí óc mình suốt năm mới này không?)
> For that reason, the apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 3:18 – “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (Vì lý do đó mà sứ đồ Phaolô đã nói trong 2 Côrinhtô 3:18 như sau: “Chúng ta ai nấy đều để mặt trần mà nhìn xem vinh hiển Chúa như trong gương, thì hóa nên cũng một ảnh tượng Ngài, từ vinh hiển qua vinh hiển, như bởi Chúa, là Thánh Linh.”)
> Our present life should display the glory of God’s attributes in everything we do. (Đời sống của mỗi c/ta phải phô trương những đặc tánh vinh hiển của Chúa trong mọi việc mình làm.)
# At all the famous clothing stores, they always have some clear glass windows where they set some dummies wearing new clothes to display the new fashions for people to see and to buy. (Ở trong những tiệm bán quần áo nổi tiếng, lúc nào cũng có những lồng kính sáng rực rỡ để trưng bày, phô trương những người nộm mặc những mốt thời trang mới nhất, mời mọc mọi người đi vào thử và mua.)
> We are in the same way in this world, living and displaying the glory of God in everything we do, so that others can see God and come to believe in Him. (C/ta còn sống trên thế gian này cũng giống như những người nộm, mỗi ngày phô trương sự vinh hiển của Chúa qua tất cả những việc c/ta làm, để họ đến biết Chúa, tin và được cứu.)
> How do we actually display God’s glory in the things we do every day? (Làm sao c/ta phô trương sự vinh hiển của Chúa qua những việc làm hằng ngày?)
1) First, through our transformed life by God’s Almighty, we display His glory and power. (Thứ nhất, qua sự thay đổi biến hóa trong đời sống của mình, c/ta phô bày sự vinh hiển về quyền năng Chúa.)
# We hear so many stories in Hanoi, Vietnam about hundreds & hundreds of prisoners are now free from the addiction of drugs and now they witness God’s glory and power. (Biết bao nhiêu những câu chuyện, lời chứng của những tù nhân bên Hànội Vietnam đã thoát khỏi sư nghiện ngập, xiềng xích của ma túy cần sa, bởi quyền năng Chúa, và nay đứng lên làm chứng sự vinh hiển và quyền năng của Ngài.)
# Is there any addiction that you have overcame with the help of the great and awesome God? (Có những nghiện ngập xấu xa nào trong đời sống của quí vị và tôi mà mình đã chiến thắng được bởi quyền năng của Chúa giúp đỡ, để bày tỏ sự vinh hiển của Ngài?)
> In this New Year, we should all desire to experience more transformations by God to overcome the evil one and addictions, so that our life can bring glory to Him. (Trong năm mới này c/ta phải ao ước được kinh nghiệm sự đổi mới luôn trong đời sống bởi quyền năng Chúa để đem sự vinh hiển đến cho Ngài.)
# Some of the addictions could be jealousy, bitterness, greed, gossip, drunkenness, gambling, over-working, pornography… (Một số những nghiện ngập này có thể là sự ghen tức, cay đắng, tham lam, nói xấu, rượu chè say sưa, cờ bạc, làm việc quá sứa, hay những hình ảnh ô dâm…)
2) Secondly, we can display God’s glory and exalt His Name through our praises of worship. (C/ta có thể phô trương sự vinh hiển của Chúa, nâng cao danh thánh Ngài qua sự ca ngợi và thờ phượng Chúa.)
# We should desire in the New Year to become better worshippers. (C/ta phải mong ước trong năm mới này trở nên những người thờ phượng Chúa đẹp lòng Ngài hơn.)
> If you want to be a better worshipper, remember true worship should include the 3 “P’s” – The Preparation, Present and Participation. (Sự thờ phượng phải lẽ thì bao gồm 3 phần: Sự sửa soạn, sự có mặt, và sự dự phần.)
a) How much do you prepare your heart to worship God comparing to other things in life? (C/ta sửa soạn tấm lòng thờ phượng Chúa chung mỗi Chúa Nhật như thế nào, so sánh với những việc khác trong đời sống?)
# When I go fishing I always have a prepared checklist, because I don’t want to miss anything that can cause trouble to the trip, including set up the alarm to wake up the right time; what about worship – do we have a prepared list each Saturday night? (Trước khi tôi đi câu cá luôn có một cái list sửa soạn sẵn sàng từng li từng tí một, để chắc mình sẽ không bị thiếu một thứ gì, kể cả vặn đồng hồ báo động dạy cho đúng giờ, nhưng còn việc thờ phượng Chúa thì sao, c/ta sửa soạn kỹ càng như thế nào?)
> May be you need to set a goal for this New Year is to come to church prayer time at 8:00 a.m. each Sunday to prepare your heart before worship? (Có thể c/ta đặt mục tiêu đến nhà thờ sớm tĩnh tâm mỗi sáng sớm Chúa Nhật sửa soạn tấm lòng để thờ phượng Chúa?)
b) You must be present for a cooperated worship as commanded by His word; don’t ever be fooled by the devil saying to your lazy heart the thought that I can worship God anywhere, even on the fishing boat, because God is everywhere. (Bạn phải có mặt để thờ phượng Chúa; Đừng bao để ma quỉ cám dỗ c/ta tự nghĩ rằng ĐCT ở khắp mọi nơi, cho nên tôi thờ phượng Chúa ở đâu cũng được, kể cả trên một chiếc thuyền câu cá?)
# Hebrews 10:25 reminds us what? “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Tác gỉa Hêbêrơ trong 10:25 nhắc c/ta – “chớ bỏ sự nhóm lại như mấy kẻ quen làm, nhưng phải khuyên bảo nhau, và hễ anh em thấy ngày ấy hầu gần chừng nào, thì càng phải làm như vậy chừng nấy.”)
c) True worship requires participation and involvement. (Sự thờ phượng thật đòi hỏi sự dự phần của mỗi tín hữu.)
# Do you have a part in the worship performance for God? (Quí vị có phần gì trong sự thờ phượng Chúa không?)
> Remember the church is not the audience in worship, but God is. We come here to perform our praises for God, not to show off to one another. We are here to bow down and worship God and not for entertaining one another. So we do not need more entertaining, but we need more focus on God. (Nhớ rằng khán gỉa trong mọi buổi thờ phượng không phải là hội thánh, không phải tôi và bạn, nhưng là Chúa. C/ta ca ngợi hát tôn vinh cho Chúa, chứ không để trình diễn cho đám đông xem. Cho nên c/ta không cần thêm nhiều phần trình diễn cho người ta xem, nhưng chú tâm hơn đến Chúa mà thờ phượng.)
# Do you participate in an offering for the King of all kings in worship? (C/ta đến đây có của lễ dâng nào cho Chúa là Vua của c/ta, là Chủ của hội thánh, là Chúa của đời sống mình không?)
> Don’t be the audience so worship won’t be boring. (Đừng đến đây chỉ làm khán gỉa; nếu không sự thờ phượng của c/ta sẽ trở nên chán ngán lắm!)
3) Thirdly, to glorify God we must learn to listen to His word and obey His commandments. (Để làm sáng danh vinh hiển Chúa, c/ta phải tập lắng nghe và vâng lời làm theo lời Chúa dạy.)
# 1 John 5:3 the apostle John taught a simple true about true love for God – “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,” (Trong 1 Giăng 5:3, sứ đồ Giăng dạy lẽ thật về tình yêu dành cho Chúa – “Vì nầy là sự yêu mến Đức Chúa Trời, tức là chúng ta vâng giữ điều răn Ngài. Điều răn của Ngài chẳng phải là nặng nề,”)

4) Fourthly, we display/shine God’s glory by doing good works, as Jesus said in Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (C/ta tỏa sáng sự vinh hiển của Chúa qua những việc lành mình làm như Chúa Giê-xu đã một lần phán – “Sự sáng các ngươi hãy soi trước mặt người ta như vậy, đặng họ thấy những việc lành của các ngươi, và ngợi khen Cha các ngươi ở trên trời.”)
> May be one of the good works that the Holy Spirit wants you to do in the New Year is to forgive your enemies as you have been forgiven by God? Are you willing to do it? (Có thể một việc lành Chúa Thánh Linh đang muốn tôi và bạn làm đó là tha thứ những kẻ phạm nghịch cùng mình, và bạn có bằng lòng làm không để phô trương sự vinh hiển của Chúa?)

> We should desire that our life can be transformed more and more this New year to display His power and glory. (C/ta phải mong đời sống mình luôn được đổi mới trong năm mới này để phô bày sự vinh hiển của quyền năng Chúa trong mọi việc mình làm.)
> We should desire to be better worshippers to exalt His Name. (C/ta phải mong được thờ phượng Chúa cách đẹp lòng hơn với hết cả tấm lòng sửa soạn, có mặt, và dự phần ca ngợi và nâng cao danh Ngài trên hết thảy các thần.)
> We shoud desire to listen to His word more and to obey His commandments. (C/ta phải mong được nghe lời Chúa phán cùng mình và làm theo y như ý Ngài muốn.)
> In everything you do – always asking yourself: does this thing glorify God and only Him alone? (Trong mọi việc c/ta làm phải luôn tự hỏi - việc tôi sắp sửa làm có thật đem vinh hiển đến cho Chúa không, có làm sáng danh Ngài không?)
# Does it display God’s holiness, faithfulness, mercy, love, Lordship, power, patience, and generosity? (Những việc này có bày tỏ bản tánh vinh hiển của Chúa là thánh khiết, thành tín, nhơn từ, yêu thương, tôn kính, quyền năng, kiên nhẫn, rộng lượng không?)
> And when we glorify God, He will be more pleasing; Our church will be more unified; Our families will experience greater happiness; Our Christian life will have more impact of the Gospel to the community. # If you don’t plan anything, you will always get what you don’t plan – that is “nothing.”
> Your spiritual life must have a focus, a goal, a target, an aim to pursue for God.
> Set a spiritual motto in everything you do this New Year, you will glorify God, according to 1 Corinthians 10:31.
> What does this mean?
# Everything we do making sure that they display God’s attributes of His holiness, faithfulness, mercy, love, Lordship, power, patience, and generosity.
> How do we do that?
a) Shine the glory of God’s power through our transformed life by overcoming all kinds of addictions.
b) Exalt His majesty through our cooperated worship with preparation, present, and participation.
c) Display His glory by our obedience to God’s word.
d) Show His greatness by our good works so the world can know and glorify God.
> We will commit to shine His glory clearly to the world, so clear as a HDTV, so many will come to know Him and be saved.
# You know why a HDTV cost much more than just a regular TV, because it has more pixels (tia sáng chiếu) to produce a much clearer image.
> We should check ourselves often using an acronym “IIGG” meaning “Is It Glorifying God?” in everything we do, to make sure God is always exalted and all glory is due to Him alone.
> We will not satisfy until God is glorified!
New Year Motto – Glorifying God
1 Corinthians 10:31
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Today is a very special Sunday, because it is the first Sunday of 2016. Have you made any resolutions for the New Year yet? The most common resolutions that many Americans always make are a) to lose a little weight and b) for some to quit smoking, so they can live healthier and longer, and c) others to spend more time with families. What about your spiritual life, have you set any goal for the New Year? Do you plan to be a better disciple of Jesus? Do you want to know God more this New Year? If you do not have any resolution yet, I hope that the sermon this morning can help you to set a spiritual motto for the New Year. Every company has a motto/slogan to help people paying attention to their products, or the employees to focus on their company mission. For our spiritual life, we can use God’s word to set a motto for the New Year. 1 Corinthians 10:31 scripture is a good one to help us focusing in everything that we do in this New Year is for no other reason than to glorify God.
To understand this purpose, we need to know why we were created in the beginning. We are created by God at least for two main reasons: a) To enjoy God forever in heaven. And b) we are created to glorify Him. God is self-existed, and independent that means He does not need to create us to bring Him glory; but He did it out of His own will, desire and kindness. So if we want to glorify God in everything we do this New Year then we first need to understand what does the glory of God mean? The word “glory” expresses the greatness and awesomeness of God, beyond human capacity to comprehend. God is Spirit, He does not have a shoe’s size; We cannot see Him with our human eyes, but with the eyes of faith we can observe His greatness, His glory through the things that God is doing. a) First, His creation is great and awesome that whose mind can comprehend all of it? Can any scientist or astrologer comprehend the vast space and all the galaxies? b) Secondly, His incarnation at the first Christmas when the Son of God became a baby laying in the manger revealed God’s glory and awesomeness.
Why did the incarnation of God’s Son show His glory? In the beginning, we were created in God’s image, not physically, but having some of His attributes that reflect God’s glory. But sin distorted this image and caused a separation between sinners and holy and perfect God. For that reason, in Romans 3:23 declares that we are short of the glory of God – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Even through this tragedy, the God of mercy did not change His mind/His purpose why He created us, so He sent a Savior, His Son Jesus Christ to redeem us back unto Himself, to restore the glorious image of God in us. And at the right time, Jesus Christ was born into the world to die on the cross, paid all the debts of our sins that we could not pay, declared all who believe are righteous, gave us the power to become Gods’ children, and promised us the kingdom of heaven. To the world, the cross is foolish; but to God, it is His glory reflecting His attributes and characters of love, mercy, grace, righteousness, and faithfulness.
So, the glory of God is the display of His greatness, awesomeness, splendor, majesty, liked a “bright and glorious light” shining through the things that God does. So in everything God is doing, His glory reflects His attributes and characters; then in everything we do in our life should reflect God’s glory because He lives inside each of us. Our present life should display the glory of God’s attributes in everything we do. At all the famous clothing stores, they always have some clear glass windows where they set some dummies wearing new clothes to display the new fashions for people to see and to buy. We are in the same way in this world, living and displaying the glory of God in everything we do, so that others can see God and come to believe in Him. How do we actually display God’s glory in the things we do every day? First, through our transformed life by God’s Almighty, we display His glory and power. Is there any addiction that you have overcome with the help of the great and awesome God? In this New Year, we should all desire to experience more transformations by God to overcome the evil one and addictions, so that our life can bring glory to Him. Some of the addictions could be jealousy, bitterness, greed, gossip, drunkenness, gambling, over-working, or pornography… Secondly, we can display God’s glory and exalt His Name through our praises of worship. We should desire in the New Year to become better worshippers. If you want to be a better worshipper, remember true worship should include the 3 “P’s” – The Preparation, Present and Participation. a) How much do you prepare your heart to worship God comparing to other things in life? b) You must be present for a cooperated worship as commanded by His word; don’t ever be fooled by the devil saying to your lazy heart the thought that I can worship God anywhere, even on the fishing boat, because God is everywhere. c) True worship requires participation and involvement. Do you have a part in the worship performance for God? Remember the church is not the audience in worship, but God is. We come here to perform our praises for God, not to show off to one another. We are here to bow down and worship God and not for entertaining one another. Do you participate in an offering for the King of all kings in worship? Don’t be the audience so worship won’t be boring. Thirdly, to glorify God we must learn to listen to His word and obey His commandments. We display God’s glory when we allow God to manifest His glory through our obedience to His words, according to His will. 4) Fourthly, we display God’s glory by doing good works.
