Cầu Nguyện Luôn
Luca 18:1-8
“Đức Chúa Jêsus phán cùng môn đồ một thí dụ, để tỏ ra rằng phải cầu nguyện luôn, chớ hề mỏi mệt: 2 Trong thành kia, có một quan án không kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, không vị nể ai hết. 3 Trong thành đó cũng có một người đàn bà góa, đến thưa quan rằng: Xin xét lẽ công bình cho tôi về kẻ nghịch cùng tôi. 4 Quan ấy từ chối đã lâu. Nhưng kế đó, người tự nghĩ rằng: Dầu ta không kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, không vị nể ai hết, 5 song vì đàn bà góa nầy khuấy rầy ta, ta sẽ xét lẽ công bình cho nó, để nó không tới luôn làm nhức đầu ta. / 6 Đoạn, Chúa phán thêm rằng: Các ngươi có nghe lời quan án không công bình đó đã nói chăng? 7 Vậy, có lẽ nào Đức Chúa Trời chẳng xét lẽ công bình cho những người đã được chọn, là kẻ đêm ngày kêu xin Ngài, mà lại chậm chạp đến cứu họ sao! 8 Ta nói cùng các ngươi, Ngài sẽ vội vàng xét lẽ công bình cho họ. Song khi Con người đến, há sẽ thấy đức tin trên mặt đất chăng?”
(Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ 4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”)
I. Relationship with God by Faith
> Our human life is built on relationships; We cannot live without it. (Đời sống của mỗi người c/ta không chỉ nhờ thức ăn nước uống mà thôi, nhưng còn cần có những mối liên hệ với nhau.)
# Even before a baby is born, he already experiences the closeness with his mother inside her tummy. (Mỗi đứa bé trong bầu thai trước khi sanh ra đời thì đã cảm nhận được mối liên hệ với chính mẹ của nó.)
# It’s true when someone said - “No one lives on an island.” (Đúng y như có người đã nói: “Loài người không có ai có thể sống cô lập trên một hòn đảo được.”)
> Our life entangles with the fabric of society for physical needs. (Cuộc sống c/ta dính liền với thế giới xung quanh mình vì những nhu cầu sinh sống cần thiết.)
# Not to mention the needs of important relationships in marriage, families, relatives and friendship. (Chưa nói đến nhu cầu của những mối liên hệ phải có trong hôn nhân, những người thân và bạn bè.)
> But the most important one is the vertical relationship of knowing God, our Creator. (Nhưng mối liên hệ quan trọng nhất phải là mối liên hệ bề dọc với Đấng Sáng Tạo.)
> Why? Because that was when human life begun. (Tại sao? Lý do là vì sự sống của con người bắt đầu từ Ngài.)
> The Bible says that “God created the heavens and the earth from the beginning,” including the creation of mankind. (Kinh thánh chép: “ĐCT dựng nên trời và đất từ lúc ban đầu, kể cả dựng nên loài người c/ta.”
> Why did God breath into man’s nostrils and created us in His image? (Tại sao Chúa là hà hơi vào lỗ mũi của loài người và dựng c/ta nên giống hình ảnh của Ngài?)
# God created us with an eternal purpose for us to enjoy Him forever. (Chúa dựng loài người như vậy với ý định có mối liên hệ đời đời với mỗi người c/ta.)
> There are many dimensions in this vertical relationship between man and God. (Có nhiều chiều sâu của mối liên hệ giữa người với Trời.)
> One of three most important dimensions is faith. (Một trong 3 chiều sâu quan trọng nhất ấy là đức tin.)
# 1 Corinthians 13:13 – “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (“Nên bây giờ còn có ba điều nầy: đức tin, sự trông cậy, tình yêu thương; nhưng điều trọng hơn trong ba điều đó là tình yêu thương.”)
# Faith is the “glue” that connects mankind and God. (Đức tin là “chất keo” dính liền loài người với Đấng Tạo Hóa của nó.)
# Faith is trusting in God and waiting for His promises, even when our eyes haven’t seen them yet. (Đức tin là tin cậy Chúa và những lời Ngài hứa là có thật; cho dù mắt c/ta chưa thấy được những điều Chúa đã hứa.)
> Do you see God? Do you hear Jesus’ voice speaking to you? (Bạn có thấy Chúa không? Bạn có nghe tiếng Chúa Giê-xu phán cùng mình bao giờ chưa?)
# No, but you believe He existed and lives in your heart, because you have faith to see and know God. (Chắc là không rồi! nhưng bạn tin biết Chúa hiện hữu và đang sống trong lòng bạn, bởi vì bạn có đức tin để thấy được Chúa vô hình.)
II. Prayer
> Practically, how can we keep our faith active and healthy? (Trên thực tế, c/ta có thể làm gì để giữ đức tin sống động cho đến cùng, mà không bị sờn lòng hay mệt mỏi?)
# Jesus’s answer is to pray. (Câu trả lời của Chúa Giê-xu là hãy cầu nguyện.)
> One of the main things in Christian life must be to pray always. Why? (Một trong những việc ưu tiên trong đời sống của cơ đốc nhân là cầu nguyện.)
> Praying is something to do with our faith that keeps us going and going, especially through tribulations and trials. (Cầu nguyện là dấu chứng rõ ràng của đức tin, để giúp c/ta cứ tiến bước theo Chúa, kể cả khi đối diện với những khủng hoảng hay đau khổ trong đời sống.)
> Praying is an act of faith to wait for the future as God has promised, to overcome all fears, and to understand many mysteries, including the mystery of suffering and every unjust circumstance around us. (Cầu nguyện là sự sống động của đức tin để thấy rõ được tương lai Chúa đã định sẵn, để thắng mọi sự sợ hãi, để hiểu được những sự huyền bí, kể cả sự huyền bí của sự đau khổ và lý do tại sao có những việc ác diễn tiến xung quanh c/ta.)
> In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - the apostle Paul instructs us that we should “pray without ceasing” (Trong sách 1 Têsalônica 5:17, sứ đồ Phaolô dạy c/ta phải cầu nguyện luôn.)
> Sometimes we assume that we are competent to handle everything things well in our own strength, so we do not need to pray. (C/ta nhiều khi không cầu nguyện luôn, vì tự biết mình đã có khả năng để làm được mọi thứ thì cần xin hỏi Chúa chi nữa.)
> This is especially for the tasks that we do repeatedly. (Nhất là những việc quá quen thuộc với mình mỗi ngày vì thường hay làm luôn.)
a) We hop in the car and head off on a trip without a thought of prayer, because we’ve driven safely for many years. (C/ta lên xe là rồ máy chạy ngay chứ cần chi cầu nguyện xin Chúa giữ gìn, vì mình đã từng biết lái xe an toàn biết bao nhiêu năm rồi.)
b) We go to work every day and do our jobs without prayer, because we know how to do our jobs well. (Trong sở làm, c/ta biết làm việc giỏi, được khen thưởng nữa, thì cần chi cầu xin Chúa?)
c) This can even be true of spiritual tasks, such as preaching, teaching, singing praises, leading in worship or anything else that we do so often every Sunday that it becomes a routine. (Kể cả những việc thánh c/ta làm mỗi Chúa Nhật, từ việc giảng dạy, hát ngợi khen, hướng dẫn chương trình nhóm trở nên thói quen rồi thì cần chi cầu nguyện với Chúa.)
> But the Bible said that we need to pray always so that we don’t lose heart. (Nhưng lời Chúa dạy, mỗi người c/ta phải cầu nguyện luôn, để đừng bị sờn lòng và mệt mỏi.)
III. Persistence
> Why do we lose heart? Are you losing hope of Jesus’ return? (Tại sao c/ta sờn lòng về lời hứa của Chúa Giê-xu sẽ trở lại?)
> We lose heart for at least two reasons. (C/ta sờn lòng tối thiểu 2 lý do sau đây.)
1) We lose heart when we wait so long for God’s promises. (C/ta sờn lòng vì chờ đợi lời hứa của Chúa quá lâu mà không thấy trả lời.)
# Jesus promised in John 14:1-3 that He will return, and guess what – it is almost 2,000 years have passed. Where is He? (Chúa Giê-xu đã hứa sẽ trở lại trong Giăng 14:1-3, nhưng gần 2,000 năm rồi mọi sự vẫn y nguyên?)
> We lose heart when we pray for something for so long, and it seems that we go no where. Our sickness is still here, the pain and suffering do not go away? (C/ta cầu xin một điều gì đó mãi mà chẳng thấy có gì nhúc nhích hết, bệnh tật vẫn còn y nguyên, sự đau khổ vẫn chưa vơi?)
2) We lose heart because there are so many unjust and wicked things in the world from Christian persecutions, killings, crimes, to corruptions, happening in the world that seems nothing can stop? (C/ta quan xát thấy biết bao nhiêu những điều ác cứ diễn tiễn xung quanh mình, từ việc bắt bớ đạo, cướp giết, cho đến tham nhũng/ức hiếp mà hình như không có một quyền lực nào có thể ngăn chận những sự bất công này được?)
# In spite of years of praying for missionaries, some of the Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu sections of the world seem as resistant to the gospel as ever, and so it is easy to become discouraged about praying for world missions. (C/ta hằng cầu nguyện luôn cho những công việc truyền giáo Tin Lành, nhưng biết bao nhiêu những sự cản trở chống nghịch bắt bớ đạo cứ tiếp tục xảy ra khắp nơi?)
# We may sometimes wonder that if God is so powerful and just, then why He continues to allow these wicked things happen in the world? Why do bad things continue to happen to good people? (Tại sao những điều ác lại cứ xảy ra cho những người tốt lành đây nếu Chúa là Đấng quyền năng?)
> It seems like God isn’t answering His phone and He doesn’t even have an answering machine! This makes us losing hope and even giving up in praying. (Hình như cầu xin Chúa hoài mà không thấy Ngài quan tâm, trả lời, và dễ làm c/ta thối chí, nản lòng trong sự cầu nguyện.)
> The Lord Jesus knew the weakness of our flesh, and that we all are prone to lose heart. So, He graciously gave His disciples and us this parable “to show that at all times we ought to pray and not lose heart.” (Vì Chúa Giê-xu biết sự yếu đuối của c/ta cho nên Ngài dạy ẩn dụ này để nhắc nhở các môn đồ và mỗi người c/ta phải bền lòng cầu nguyện luôn mà chớ sờn lòng hay mệt mỏi.)
# There are two characters in this parable. (Có tất cả 2 nhân vật trong ẩn dụ này.)
1) The first character is a bad judge who cares about no one but himself, nor fear God. (Nhân vật thứ nhất là một ông quan tòa, vị thẩm phán chẳng kính nể ai, cũng chẳng kính sợ Chúa.)
2) The second character is a needy widow. (Nhận vật thứ hai là một bà góa nghèo.)
> In that society, widows were especially vulnerable, in that there were not many vocational opportunities for them. (Trong thời đó họ là loại người rất khó kiếm được việc làm sinh sống vì tuổi đã cao và sức yếu, nên không có ai muốn mướn hết.)
> Life insurance was non-existent. She was dependent on whatever her husband had left her. But now some bad dudes had cheated her out of what little she had to live on. (Thời đó người ta không có bán bảo hiểm nhân thọ, bà chỉ sống sót nhờ vào những của cải chồng bà đã để lại, nhưng có thể có kẻ ác nào đó đã hăm he lừa lọc lấy hết tài sản của bà.)
> So she comes to the judge and asks for justice. (Cho nên người đàn bà góa này tìm đến ông tòa xin xét lẽ công bình cho mình.)
> The judge probably takes one look at her compliant and sees that there is not much of profit to help her, comparing with many others who can reward him handsomely if he takes their cases; So he ignores her request. (Có lẽ ông quan tòa xem hồ sơ của bà góa nghèo này, nhưng chẳng thấy việc xử kiện cho bà sẽ đem đến ích lợi cho mình, so sánh với những sự kiện cáo khác mà mình có thể kiếm được nhiều tiền hơn. Cho nên không thèm đếm xỉa đến lời cầu xin của bà, cứ bỏ qua một bên.)
> But when the judge leaves the courtroom to go home for lunch, this woman follows his steps all the way to his house. When he comes out to go back to work, there she is. When he goes home at night, she’s there again. Every morning she is parked at the door of the courthouse, waiting for him to show up. Every day he tells her to get lost, but she keeps coming back. (Nhưng đâu ngờ khi ông quan tòa này đi đâu đi nữa, thì người đàn bà góa này cứ theo sát từ sáng đến tối năn nỉ, lèo nhèo, không chịu thua, cứ cầu xin gỉai quyết vấn đề của mình.)
> The judge just cannot get rid of her! He begins to hate going to work, because he’s going to be confronted by this nagging widow! (Ông quan tòa không thể đuổi bà góa này đi khỏi được. Ông bắt đầu thấy bối rối, bực mình mỗi khi đi làm, vì biết sẽ phải đối diện với bà góa lại năn nỉ, khuấy rầy mình.)
> Finally, after weeks of going on like this, the judge says to himself, “Even though I don’t fear God and I don’t care about his woman, but I’m going to grant her request, just to get her off my back and to have peace of mind after all!” (Cuối cùng ông quan tòa phải chịu thua, phải giải quyết vấn đề cho bà góa này để bà không còn làm phiền mình nữa, và ông không còn bị nhức đầu nữa.)
> There is a lesson to be learned from this parable of Jesus about persevering in prayer when God seems to delay the answer. (Đây là bài học Chúa Giê-xu muốn dạy dỗ c/ta phải bền bĩ, kiên trì trong sự cầu nguyện, cho dù có những lúc Chúa chậm trả lời cầu xin của c/ta.)
A. First, we need to have a proper view of God in this parable. (Trước hết, c/ta cần có cái nhìn đúng về ĐCT trong ẩn dụ này.)
(1) It would be a great mistake if we thought that Jesus was teaching that God is like this self-centered, callous judge. (C/ta chớ có hiểu lầm rằng trong ẩn dụ này Chúa Giê-xu không có dạy ĐCT giống như ông quan án xấu này.)
> But Jesus uses this hú-morous example as an argument from the lesser to the greater, and that is if this widow could get justice from this crusty, uncaring judge, doesn’t it follow that the loving, tender, gracious heavenly Father will hear and answer His own children whom He has chosen when they cry out to Him for relief? (Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu dùng ẩn dụ này để tranh luận lý lẽ về sự xấu nết của ông quan án mà người đàn bà góa còn được xét, thì huống gì ĐCT là Cha nhơn từ đầy lòng yêu thương mà không biết đoái đến và trả lời cho chính con cái mình khi c/nó kêu cầu đêm ngày sao?)
(2) God does really care for us. (ĐCT thật sự yêu thương c/ta.)
# In Psalm 103:13 - “Just as a Father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him” (Thi Thiên 103:13 – “Đức Giê-hô-va thương xót kẻ kính sợ Ngài, khác nào cha thương xót con cái mình vậy.”).
# In Isaiah 49:14-16 - “Zion has said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.’ Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;” (Trong Êsai 49:14-16 – “Si-ôn từng nói rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va đã lìa bỏ ta; Chúa đã quên ta. 15 Đàn bà há dễ quên con mình cho bú, không thương đến con trai ruột mình sao? Dầu đàn bà quên con mình, ta cũng chẳng quên ngươi. 16 Nầy ta đã chạm ngươi trong lòng bàn tay ta; các tường thành ngươi thường ở trước mặt ta luôn.”)
> Every times you doubt of God’s care and love, look at the cross where His Son once bled and died for you. (Cứ mỗi lần c/ta nghi nghờ về tình Chúa yêu c/ta thì hãy hướng nhìn lên thập tự là nơi Con một Ngài đã một lần đổ huyết chuộc tội cho c/ta.)
(3) God never delays answers because of a lack of care or a lack of power. (ĐCT chậm trễ trả lời không phải vì Ngài không có đủ quyền năng để giải cứu hay bênh vực cho c/ta.)
> Sometimes we do not understand, but we should never doubt His power; because by His word, all things were created. (Có khi c/ta không hiểu, nhưng không thể nghi ngờ Chúa quyền năng là Đấng bởi lời Ngài phán mà mọi sự được dựng nên.)
> There are many great mysteries in our life, and why God sometimes delays His answers is one of them. (Có nhiều sự huyền bí thuộc của Chúa, và một trong những sự huyền bí nhất đó là khi Chúa chậm trả lời sự cầu xin của c/ta.)
> But in His infinite wisdom, God’s delays are always for our good, even if the reasons are hidden from us. (Trong sự khôn ngoan tuyệt vời của Chúa, sự chậm trễ của Ngài luôn là để đem đến ích lợi cho c/ta, cho dù c/ta chưa hiểu tại sao.)
> We just keep on trusting Him even when we do not yet have the answers, and that’s called faith. (C/ta cứ phải tin cậy nơi Chúa cho dù chưa có câu trả lời, đó mới gọi là đức tin.)
(4) But God promises that He ultimately will bring speedy and certain justice for His elect. (Nhưng ĐCT hứa cuối cùng Ngài sẽ mau xét lẽ công bình và cứu c/ta là những người đã được chọn trong huyết của Con Ngài.)
> We must understand the delay from God’s timetable, not ours; and with the Lord, a thousand years are like a day or as a watch in the night (C/ta phải hiểu sự trả lời của Chúa luôn đi theo thời điểm của Ngài chứ không theo sự suy luận của c/ta, vì đối với Chúa 1,000 năm như một ngày.)
# God told Noah that there would be a flood, but 100 years went by without a drop of rain; while Noah endured his mocking neighbors. (ĐCT phán cùng Nôe sẽ có trận đại hồng thủy, nhưng hơn 100 năm trôi qua, không có một giọt mưa nào, khi Nôe sống ở giữa những sự chọc cười mỉa mai của đám đông.)
# God promised Abraham a son, but He watched Sarah go through menopause and 25 years elapsed before Isaac was born. (ĐCT hứa ban cho Ápbraham một đứa bé trai với Sara vợ mình, và họ phải đợi đến 25 năm sau trôi qua thì Ysác mới sanh ra đời.)
# God promised Joseph in his teenage years through his dreams that his father and brothers would bow down to him, but he spent his twenties in an Egyptian dungeon. (ĐCT hứa với Giôsép trong giấc mộng đó là cha mẹ và anh em sẽ đầu phục mình, nhưng ông đã phải đợi trải qua gần 10 năm trong ngục tù của người Ai Cập cho đến khi việc này xảy ra.)
# God promised to deliver His people from bondage in Egypt, but 400 long years went by before He raised up Moses, and that only after Moses spent 40 years in the desert after his failure. (ĐCT hứa sẽ giải cứu dân sự mình khỏi ách nô lệ của người Ai Cập, nhưng Ngài chậm trễ đến 400 năm, và Môise phải đợi 40 năm trong đồng vắng nữa.)
# God promised to send the Messiah, but His people had to wait 400 years after the last prophet before, in the fulness of time, God sent His Son (Gal. 4:4). (ĐCT hứa sẽ ban cho Đấng Cứu Thế trong lời tiên tri của Malachi, cho đến 400 năm sau thì theo đúng thời điểm, Chúa Giê-xu mới sanh ra đời.)
> If any of you understood all of this, then explain to me? (Nếu có ai hiểu tại sao những việc này chậm xảy ra thì xin giải thích cho tôi?)
> To understand the problem of delayed answers to our prayers, we need to get a proper view of God. (Để hiểu được tại sao có khi Chúa như chậm trễ trả lời, c/ta cần có cái nhìn đúng về Ngài.)
B. We also need a proper view of ourselves in this parable. (C/ta cũng cần có cái nhìn đúng về chính mình qua ẩn dụ này.)
(1) Like this widow, we all have needs. (Giống như người đàn bà góa này, mỗi người c/ta ai cũng có nhu cầu.)
> Not just our physical needs as food and jobs, but also the need of protection from the evil ones, and the pressures of this world. (Không chỉ những nhu cầu căn bản như là thức ăn hay công việc làm, nhưng còn sự bảo vệ khỏi những áp lực của những kẻ dữ trong thế gian này.)
> Somewhere we have gotten the silly notion that if we follow the Lord, everything in life will work out neatly, just as a storybook ending – “forever after;” But the Bible shows us many saints who were tortured, mocked, scourged, imprisonment, stoned, sawn in two, and put to death with the sword. (Có khi c/ta nghĩ tin Chúa thì cuộc sống bình an êm ái lắm, giống như là một câu chuyện huyền thoại đẹp; nhưng Kinh Thánh trong Hêbêrơ 11:36-39 và lịch sử đã ghi chép lại biết bao nhiêu thánh đồ bị “nhạo cười, roi vọt, lại cũng chịu xiềng xích, lao tù nữa. Họ đã bị ném đá, tra tấn, cưa xẻ; bị giết bằng lưỡi gươm; lưu lạc rày đây mai đó, mặc những da chiên da dê, bị thiếu thốn mọi đường, bị hà hiếp, ngược đãi… lưu lạc trong đồng vắng, trên núi trong hang, trong những hầm dưới đất…”)
# Look at the news on TV about many Christians – their heads get chopped off in Syria. (Hãy xem tin tức trên TV, có những người cơ đốc bị chặt đầu ở nước Syria.)
(2) As taught in this parable, we should always bring our needs to God in prayer. (C/ta phải dâng cho Chúa tất cả những nhu cầu của mình trong sự cầu nguyện ngày và đêm.)
> This widow had no attorney, no advocate to plead her case, but we have the Holy Spirit to help us pray as we ought and the Lord Jesus Himself interceding at the right hand of the Father on our behalf. (Người đàn bá góa này không có luật sư biện hộ cho mình, nhưng c/ta có Chúa Thánh Linh bên cạnh và có Chúa Giê-xu đang ngồi bên hữu ĐCT cầu thay cho c/ta.)
> She had no guarantee of getting what she desired, but we have the Lord’s promise that whatever we ask in His name, He will do it. (Bà góa này không có một sự bảo đảm gì là việc mình sẽ được xét xử, nhưng c/ta có chính lời của Chúa Thành Tín hứa là Ngài sẽ vội vã xét lẽ công binh cho c/ta.)
(3) We must pray persistently to God even when the answers are delayed. (C/ta phải bền lòng cầu nguyện cho dù khi Chúa chậm trả lời.)
> Sometimes the Lord delays answering us because we do not see how needy we really are, until God keeps us waiting for a while. (Có khi Chúa chậm trả lời để mỗi người c/ta ý thức rõ được nhu cầu mình có và hết lòng nhờ cậy nơi Chúa; nếu không c/ta dễ xem thường sự nhơn từ của Chúa.)
> Sometimes God is waiting, like a patient farmer, until the fruits of godliness, faith, and humility in our hearts are ripe before He grants the answers (Có khi Chúa như người nhà nông chờ đợi, để thấy những trái của sự kiên trì, khiêm nhường, tin cậy mọc lên ở trong c/ta được chín, rồi Chúa mới đáp lời.)
> Sometimes God delays our requests so that we can have opportunities to prove our faith to Him, especially when He returns the second time. (Có khi Chúa chậm trễ bênh vực c/ta để c/ta có cơ hội làm chứng đức tin bền bĩ của c/ta cho Ngài, nhất là khi Chúa Giê-xu trở lại.)
> We must practice persistent prayer, and do not give up. (C/ta phải tập bền lòng trong sự cầu nguyện; không chịu thua, không bỏ cuộc, không hờ hửng, không sờn lòng.)
# Pray for our children and families every day. (Cầu nguyện cho con cái và gia đình)
# Pray for God’s church every day, its leadership and all the followers. (Cho hội Thánh Chúa, thành phần lãnh đạo và mỗi hội viên)
# Pray for the nations who submit to the Lordship of Christ. (Cho đất nước đều qui phục tôn Chúa làm Chúa.)

> We as Christians are living in US - a most comfortable place in the world; we look good and healthy from outside, but inside our faith seems to wither, does not have much fruits, because of the lack of the need to pray. > Is your faith so persistently like the nagging widow in the parable, to keep on asking Jesus until you receive what you need, according to God’s will and His timetable?
> May you see the reality of your faith and will make an adjustment in life to pray persistenly.
> May be you should start a list of prayer and begging God everyday, to show your dependence in Jesus.
> And when Jesus returns, He would be satisfied because Jesus sees faith in you and reward you.

Pray Always and Do Not Lose Heart
Luke 18:1-8
Our human life is built on relationships; we cannot live without it. Our life entangles with the fabric of society for physical needs, in addition to the needs of important relationships in marriage, families, and friendship. But the most important one is the vertical relationship of knowing God, our Creator. Why? Because that was when human life begun. The Bible says that “God created the heavens and the earth from the beginning,” including the creation of mankind. Why did God breath into man’s nostrils and created us in His image? God created us with an eternal purpose for us to enjoy Him forever. There are many dimensions in this vertical relationship between man and God. One of three most important dimensions is faith. Faith is the “glue” that connects mankind and God. Faith is trusting in God and His promises, even when our eyes haven’t seen them yet. So how can we keep our faith active and healthy? Jesus’s answer is to pray. Why? Praying is an act of faith to wait for the future as God has promised, to overcome all fears, and to understand many mysteries, including the mystery of suffering and every unjust circumstance around us. The Bible said that we need to pray always so that we don’t lose heart.
Why do we lose heart? We lose heart for at least two reasons. (1) We lose heart when we pray for something for so long, and it seems that we go nowhere. Our sickness is still here, the pain and suffering do not go away. (2) We lose heart because there are so many unjust and wicked things from Christian persecutions, killings, crimes, to corruptions, happening in the world that seems nothing can stop? It seems like God isn’t answering His phone and He doesn’t even have an answering machine. This makes us losing hope and even giving up in praying. The Lord Jesus knew the weakness of our flesh and that we all are prone to lose heart; So, He graciously gave His disciples and us this parable “to show that at all times we ought to pray.” There are two characters in this parable. The first character is a wicked judge who cares about no one but himself, nor fear God. The second character is a needy widow. In that society, widows were especially vulnerable, in that there were not many vocational opportunities for them. She was dependent on whatever her husband had left her. But some bad dudes had cheated her out of what little she had to live on. So she comes to the judge and asks for justice. The judge probably takes one look at her compliant and sees that there is not much of profit, comparing with many others who can reward him handsomely if he takes their cases; so he ignores her request. But the judge just cannot get rid of her! He begins to hate going to work, because he’s going to be confronted by this nagging widow! Finally, after weeks of going on like this, the judge says to himself, “Even though I don’t fear God and I don’t care about his woman, but I’m going to grant her request just to get her off my back and to have peace of mind after all!” There is a lesson to be learned from this parable of Jesus about persevering in prayer when God seems to delay the answer. First, we need to have a proper view of God in this parable. It would be a great mistake if we thought that Jesus was teaching that God is like this self-centered, callous judge. But Jesus uses this humorous example as an argument from the lesser to the greater, and that is if this widow could get justice from this crusty, uncaring judge, doesn’t it follow that the loving, tender, gracious heavenly Father will hear and answer His own children whom He has chosen when they cry out to Him for relief? God does really care for us. Every times you doubt of God’s care and love, look at the cross where His Son once bled and died for you. God never delays answers because of a lack of care or a lack of power. Sometimes we do not understand, but we should never doubt His power; because by His word, all things are created. In His infinite wisdom, God’s delays are always for our good, even if the reasons are hidden from us. We just keep on trusting Him even when we do not yet have the answers, and that’s called faith. But God promises that He ultimately will bring speedy and certain justice for His elect. We must understand the delay from God’s timetable, not ours; and with the Lord. Secondly, we also need a proper view of ourselves in this parable. Like this widow, we all have needs. Not just our physical needs as food and jobs, but also the protection from the evil ones. As taught in this parable, we should always bring our needs to God in prayer. This widow had no attorney to plead her case, but we have the Holy Spirit to help us pray as we ought and the Lord Jesus Himself interceding at the right hand of the Father on our behalf. She had no guarantee of getting what she desired, but we have the Lord’s promise that whatever we ask in His name, He will do it. We must pray persistently to God even when the answers are delayed. Sometimes God is waiting, like a patient farmer, until the fruits of godliness, faith, and humility in our hearts are ripe before He grants the answers. We must practice persistent prayer until the Lord Jesus returns and finds faith in us.
