Lắng Nghe Tiếng Chúa
(Hear God)
Giăng 10:1-5
“Quả thật, quả thật, ta (Chúa Giê-xu) nói cùng các ngươi, kẻ nào chẳng bởi cửa mà vào chuồng chiên, nhưng trèo vào từ nơi khác, thì người đó là trộm cướp. 2 Nhưng kẻ bởi cửa mà vào, là người chăn chiên (thật). 3 Người canh cửa mở cho chiên nghe tiếng người chăn; người chăn kêu tên chiên mình mà dẫn ra ngoài. 4 Khi người đã đem chiên ra hết, thì đi trước, chiên theo sau, vì chiên quen tiếng người. 5 Nhưng chiên chẳng theo người lạ; trái lại nó chạy trốn, vì chẳng quen tiếng người lạ.”
(Very truly I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.)
I. Growing Process
> Are you growing spiritually? What is the process of the spiritual growth? (Làm sao đời sống tâm linh đức tin của c/ta được tăng trưởng đều đặn? Phương pháp là sao?)
# You are getting older… doesn’t mean that you are growing and matured in Christ. (Bạn càng ngày càng gìa đi… không có nghĩa là tự nhiên con người thuộc linh của bạn được tăng trưởng.)
> Some Christians have been saved a long time… but they still remain as spiritual babies? (Vô số những người cơ đốc họ đã tin nhận Chúa Giê-xu lâu rồi, nhưng vẫn cứ còn ở trong tình trạng của những em bé thuộc linh.)
# They still need to be fed and care for. (Họ vẫn còn phải được chăm sóc, đút cho ăn, nuông chìu mãi mà chưa tự túc được.)
> Why haven’t they borne any spiritual fruits? (Tại sao những người này vẫn chưa sanh trái thuộc linh nào hết?)
> May be because they have not understood the process of spiritual maturity? (Có lẽ là bởi vì họ chưa hiểu rõ tiến trình tăng trưởng thuộc linh.)
# If we say that we are Christians, but there is no change, no spiritual growth, then we basically give a bad witness to the world that Jesus has no power of transformation and our invitation them to come to Jesus has no affect. (Nếu c/ta nói mình là cơ đốc nhân, là những người thuộc của Đấng Christ, nhưng đời sống không có sự thay đổi, tăng trưởng biến hóa chi hết, thì thật c/ta đang làm chứng xấu về Chúa không có quyền năng biến đổi chi hết, và lời mời mọc của c/ta với họ đến với Chúa không có “áp-phê.”)
> The spiritual maturity is a simple and continuous process including the following steps:
1) Hear God, 2) understand His call, 3) obey daily, and 4) bear fruits… such as love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Sự tăng trưởng thuộc linh là một tiến trình đơn giản gồm có những bước sau đây: Nghe tiếng Chúa, hiểu Ngài sai gì, vâng lời thi hành, và rồi sanh trái thuộc linh… như là lòng yêu thương, sự vui mừng, bình an, nhịn nhục, nhân từ, hiền lành, trung tín, mềm mại, và tiết độ.)
> Some Christians do not even pass the first step of hearing God; that’s why there is no transformation in their lives. (Có người thì chưa vượt qua được bước thứ nhất đó là nghe được tiếng Chúa phán cùng mình, thì làm sao có sự biến hóa, thay đổi được đây?)
# Of course, they do go to church every Sunday, but they are not hearing God. (Đương nhiên không phải những người này không có đi nhà thờ, nhưng họ đến đây thật sự không có nghe tiếng Chúa phán cùng mình.)
> We must learn how to hear God, then from this first step hopefully it can lead us to maturity in faith. (C/ta phải tập nghe được tiếng Chúa phán cho chính mình, và từ bước thứ nhất này c/ta mới có thể tăng trưởng dần.)
II. God Speaks in Different Ways
> God always wants to speak to us; that’s not the problem, but do we really listen to His voice? (Chúa luôn muốn phán cùng mỗi người c/ta, đó không phải là vấn đề, nhưng là c/ta có thật sự lắng nghe tiếng Chúa không?)
# Do we come to church with an expectation wanting God to speak to us individually, and not the person sits next to us. (Bạn đến nhà thờ mỗi Chúa Nhật có tấm lòng muốn nghe được tiếng Chúa phán cùng mình, sẵn lòng vâng theo không, chứ không có nghĩ là những gì mình nghe là cho người ngồi bên cạnh?)
1) In the old times, God communicated with His people in many different ways: audible voices through dreams and visions, or non-verbal means through prophets, or angels. (Ngày xưa, Đức Chúa Trời phán cho dân sự của Ngài qua nhiều cách: bằng tiếng phán trực tiếp, qua các thiên sứ, hay qua những giấc mộng, hay các lời đến từ các đấng triên tri.)
# God spoke to Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3 – “There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.” (Chúa phán cùng Môise tại bụi gai cháy trong Xuất Hành 3 – “Thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va hiện ra cùng người trong ngọn lửa, giữa bụi gai kia. Người nhìn thấy cả bụi gai đang cháy, nhưng không hề tàn. 3 Môi-se bèn nói rằng: Ta hãy tẻ bước lại đặng xem sự lạ lớn nầy, vì cớ sao bụi gai chẳng tàn chút nào. 4 Đức Giê-hô-va thấy người tẻ bước lại xem, Đức Chúa Trời bèn ở giữa bụi gai gọi rằng: Hỡi Môi-se, hỡi Môi-se! Người thưa rằng: Có tôi đây! 5 Đức Chúa Trời phán rằng: Chớ lại gần chốn nầy, Hãy cổi giầy ngươi ra, vì chỗ ngươi đang đứng là đất thánh. 6 Rồi Ngài lại nói: Ta là Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ ngươi, Đức Chúa Trời của Áp-ra-ham, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sác, và Đức Chúa Trời của Gia-cốp. Môi-se liền che mặt, vì sợ nhìn đến Đức Chúa Trời.”)
> But in Hebrews 1:1-3 said today God speaks through whom? “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Nhưng trong Hêbêrơ 1:1-3 có chép ngày nay Chúa phán đến c/ta qua ai? “Đời xưa, Đức Chúa Trời đã dùng các đấng tiên tri phán dạy tổ phụ chúng ta nhiều lần nhiều cách, 2 rồi đến những ngày sau rốt nầy, Ngài phán dạy chúng ta bởi Con Ngài, là Con mà Ngài đã lập lên kế tự muôn vật, lại bởi Con mà Ngài đã dựng nên thế gian; 3 Con là sự chói sáng của sự vinh hiển Đức Chúa Trời và hình bóng của bản thể Ngài, lấy lời có quyền phép Ngài nâng đỡ muôn vật; sau khi Con làm xong sự sạch tội, bèn ngồi bên hữu Đấng tôn nghiêm ở trong nơi rất cao,”)
> Today, God speaks to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. (Ngày hôm nay Chúa phán với c/ta qua Con Ngài là Đức Chúa Giê-xu Christ.)
> And today we are blessed to have the whole Bible - the written words are the revelation of Jesus that God wants to speak to us. (Ngày nay c/ta được phước có cả trọn sách Kinh Thánh, là lời của Chúa, được viết xuống khải thị cho c/ta biết đến Chúa Giê-xu và nghe được tiếng Đức Chúa Trời phán cho mình qua Con Ngài.)
> Remember in John 1:1-2 – it said: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” And the Word here is Jesus Christ. (Nhớ là trong Giăng 1:1-2 có chép – “Ban đầu có Ngôi Lời, Ngôi Lời ở cùng Đức Chúa Trời, và Ngôi Lời là Đức Chúa Trời. Ban đầu Ngài ở cùng Đức Chúa Trời.”)
> So when we concentrate in the Bible that is God’s Word, the written revelation of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, we can know Him and hear from God. (Điểm chính ở đây là khi c/ta chú tâm học Kinh Thánh là lời của Đức Chúa Trời, khải thị cho c/ta biết về Chúa Giê-xu là ai, Ngài dạy dỗ c/ta phải làm gì, sống như thế nào… chính là lúc c/ta nghe biết tiếng Đức Chúa Trời phán cùng mình.)
> Listening to the teaching words of Jesus is hearing God because Jesus is God in human form. (Nghe lời của Chúa Giê-xu dạy dỗ là nghe được tiếng phán của Đức Chúa Trời.)
2) In Ephesians 4:11 lists several other means that God uses to speak to us through His Son – “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.” (Trong Êphêsô 4:11 có chép những cách khác Chúa phán dạy cùng c/ta – “Ấy chính Ngài đã cho người nầy làm sứ đồ, kẻ kia làm tiên tri, người khác làm thầy giảng Tin Lành, kẻ khác nữa làm mục sư và giáo sư,”)
> My calling standing up here as a pastor is not to entertain you, not to make you laugh with funny jokes that you want to hear, but to explain and reveal truths about Jesus Christ through the written scriptures of what God wants to do with your life. (Chúa gọi tôi trong chức vụ của người chăn bày (Mục Sư) đứng ở trên đây không phải là để làm vui cho quí vị nghe những câu chuyện cười, nhưng là để giải thích và bày tỏ những lẽ thật về Chúa Giê-xu qua lời Kinh Thánh, để quí vị biết mình phải sống như thế nào đẹp ý của Đức Chúa Trời.)
# I am discouraged when someone remembers my jokes in a sermon, but not the truths about Jesus in that sermon – that means I did not do a good job of preaching. (Tôi thấy bối rối khi có người nhớ rõ những câu chuyện cười trong một bài giảng tôi chia xẻ, nhưng lại không nhớ những lẽ đạo về Chúa Giê-xu tôi đã giảng, thì thật tôi đã không làm công việc của Chúa cách tốt đẹp.)
> So I tell less jokes and spend more time explaining the scriptures revealing Who Jesus is. (Vì vậy mà dạo này tôi ít kể chuyện hơn, nhưng dành thêm thì giờ giải thích lời Kinh Thánh bày tỏ Chúa Giê-xu là ai.)
> If you come here to find some entertainment, you come to the wrong place; because the primary purpose of worship is not about you, but all about Jesus and God Who want to save us out of terrible hell and bring us into His kingdom. (Nếu bạn đến đây muốn kiếm vui thì bạn đến lộn chỗ rồi. Nơi thờ phượng này không phải là cho bạn, nhưng tất cả là cho Chúa là Đấng muốn cứu bạn khỏi lửa địa ngục, và ban phước cho bạn sự sống đời đời trong nước thiên đàng của Ngài.)
3) Still another way God speaks to us today is through prayer, that is when the Holy Spirit impresses thoughts of God’s wills in our mind and heart as we concentrate in hearing God. (Một cách nữa Chúa nói cùng c/ta là qua sự cầu nguyện; Đây là lúc Thánh Linh khắc sâu một ý tưởng của Chúa vào trong trí óc khi c/ta đổ hết tâm hồn ra trong sự tìm kiếm Ngài.)
# 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (Trong 1 Côrinhtô 3:16 nhắc nhở gì? “Anh em há chẳng biết mình là đền thờ của Đức Chúa Trời, và Thánh Linh Đức Chúa Trời ở trong anh em sao?”)
> When you pray, the Holy Spirit put thoughts in your mind so that we can know how to live a life pleasing God. (Khi c/ta cầu nguyện, Thánh Linh Chúa đặt những ý nghĩ, tư tưởng vào trong trí óc để c/ta hiểu được mình phải sống, cư xử như thế nào để làm đẹp lòng Chúa.)
> Because one of His important roles is to teach and remind us the words of God, as said in John 14:26 – “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (Bởi vì một trong những vai trò của Thánh Linh là dạy dỗ và còn nhắc nhở c/ta lời Kinh Thánh chép gì về Chúa Giê-xu để c/ta làm theo y như vậy – Giăng 14:26 – “Nhưng Đấng Yên ủi, tức là Đức Thánh Linh mà Cha sẽ nhân danh ta sai xuống, Đấng ấy sẽ dạy dỗ các ngươi mọi sự, nhắc lại cho các ngươi nhớ mọi điều ta đã phán cùng các ngươi.”)
> Also through difficult circumstances such as sickness, broken relationship, losing a job, accidents, the Holy Spirit reminds us the scriptures that God loves, cares and readily to help if we call upon Him. (Qua những hoàn cảnh đau thương như là mắc phải một căn bệnh hiểm nguy, gia đình đổ vỡ, mất job, tai nạn, Thánh linh Chúa nhắc nhở c/ta lời Kinh Thánh để c/ta có thể nghe tiếng Ngài phán, yên ủi vì Chúa yêu thương và luôn ở gần giúp đỡ c/ta vượt qua được sự khó khăn.)
> Sometimes we call this reminder as an inner voice. (Có khi c/ta có danh từ gọi đây là “tiếng nói nho nhỏ” của Chúa êm dịu phán cùng mình.)
> So through the Bible study and prayer, we can hear God speaking to us. (Như vậy qua sự học Kinh Thánh có chép lời dạy dỗ của Chúa Giê-xu và qua lúc cầu nguyện c/ta nghe được tiếng Chúa phán cùng mình.)
> Unfortunately, many Christians living today don’t even have a daily devotion time of reading the Bible and praying; so they are living a life of broken communication with God and find no peace for their soul. (Nhưng điều đáng tiếc là vô số người cơ đốc ngày hôm nay lại không có thì giờ làm hai việc quan trọng này, cho nên đời sống của họ vẫn cứ còn nhiều những xáo trộn, lo lắng, mà chưa tìm được sự bình an cho linh hồn mình.)
III. The Parable of the Good Shepherd
> The parable of Jesus about the good Shepherd we read this morning is a beautiful one. (Ẩn dụ Người Chăn Hiền lành mà c/ta đã đọc vẽ một hình ảnh đẹp về bí quyết để làm sao nghe được tiếng Chúa.)
1) It paints a picture of an intimate relationship between the sheep and their shepherd. (Đây là hình ảnh của một mối liên hệ mật thiết giữa những con chiên và Người chăn của chúng nó.)
> How can the sheep find the green grass and quiet springs of water? (Câu hỏi là làm thế nào để những con chiên tìm được “mé nước bình tịnh và đồng cỏ xanh tươi?”)
> The only way is by listening to their Shepherd’s voice, and follow Him. (Chỉ có cách là những con chiên cần phải có sự hướng dẫn của người Chăn mình, nghĩa là chiên phải lắng nghe được tiếng người Chăn gọi và đi theo người.)
# Why there are so many Christians have not found the “green pastures or quiet waters” yet, but their life is still full of chaos and troubles; it’s simply because they ignore God’s voice, calling and leading them. (Tại sao ngày hôm nay còn vô số những người cơ đốc vẫn chưa tìm được “đồng cỏ xanh tươi,” nhưng toàn là những hỗn độn, xáo trộn trong cuộc sống, cũng là vì họ chẳng thèm nghe tiếng Chúa phán cùng mình và muốn dẫn lối mình đi.)
2) With this intimate relationship with God through reading the Bible and prayer, we can clearly recognize His voice, not getting mixed-up, because there are also other voices around from the devil, the world, and even from the desires of our own flesh. (Với mối liên hệ mật thiết qua sự học Kinh thánh và cầu nguyện, c/ta có thể nhận diện ra tiếng Chúa gọi rõ ràng, bởi vì trên thế gian này cũng có những tiếng nói dụ dỗ từ ma quỉ, lời mời mọc của thế gian, và kể cả sự thúc đẩy của sự đòi hỏi tư dục xác thịt.)
> Without a close relationship with the shepherd, the sheep would not be able to discern whether it is their shepherd’s voice to follow, or the traps of strangers and thieves to run away from. (Với mối liên hệ mật thiết – quen tiếng người chăn, con chiên có thể phân biệt ra có phải tiếng của người chăn không mà đi theo, hay là tiếng của người lạ hoặc kẻ trộm cướp mà chạy xa đi.)
> Sheep that belong to and know the Shepherd should recognize His voice, and guard themselves from all other voices. (Nếu chiên quen tiếng rồi thì chiên biết phân biệt được thế nào là tiếng của người chăn và canh giữa mình khỏi lời dụ dỗ của những kẻ trộm cướp.)
> This is not just the “knowing about,” but the deep knowledge with an understanding heart of Who God is and what He speaks to us about. (“Quen” đây không chỉ là một mối liên hệ sơ sài, chỉ “biết thoáng qua” thôi, nhưng quen biết thường, biết rõ, biết chi tiết, biết sâu đậm với tấm lòng hiểu rõ Chúa là ai và mục đích tại sao Ngài phán cùng mình như vậy.)
> This is the key for discernment is the more you spend time with the Shepherd, the clearer you can know His voice, and can discern when it is not. (Đây là bí quyết - c/ta càng gần gũi với người chăn, c/ta càng quen rõ tiếng của người, hay là tiếng của kẻ lạ, đó là ý nghĩa của động từ “quen.”)
# I don’t need to look at a person face to be able to recognize my wife’s voice – why? I am spending a lot of time with her and listening to her voice every day. (Tôi đâu cần phải nhìn mặt một người phụ nữ mà có thể nhận ra đó là tiếng nói của vợ tôi - tại sao hay vậy? Là vì tôi sống với cô nhiều năm và đã từng quen nghe tiếng của người rồi.)
3) There are times that the sheep do not hear the shepherd’s voice because of their stubbornness and busy-ness. (Có lúc chiên sẽ không nghe tiếng người chăn, vì sự cứng đầu cứng cổ của nó, hoặc đời sống quá bận rộn.)
> They do recognize their shepherd’s voice, but they don’t want to hear it to follow. (Chiên nhận biết tiếng người chăn của mình, nhưng không chịu nghe vì không muốn đi theo.)
> Sometimes our mind is full of many distractions from the world and our heart has many idols that there is no room to hear God. (Tâm trí của c/ta có khi chứa quá nhiều những sự lo ra ở đời này, còn trong lòng thì còn đầy những thần tượng ham muốn thì làm sao còn có chỗ để lắng nghe tiếng Chúa được .)
# Sometimes you go and witness to someone, you can tell that his mind is at some where else; they hear us just for the hearing because their mind is occupied with many self-ambitions; so there is no penetration through the center of their heart. (Có khi c/ta làm chứng cho một người nào đó, nhưng tâm trí họ cứ để ở đâu đâu vì trí óc họ đầy những tham vọng khác; Họ nghe lời làm chứng của c/ta như là nghe một tiếng ngoại quốc; không có sự chạm vào lòng chi hết.)
> So God sometimes allows some “difficult” situations happened to us, so we must stop and begin to hear Him calling us, and response: “Lord! Here I am. Speak, for your servant is listening.” (Vì vậy mà sẽ có lúc Chúa cho phép những hoạn nạn khó khăn xảy ra trong đời sống, để c/ta mới chịu “dừng bước lại” lắng nghe tiếng Chúa và đáp lời Ngài.)
# There are times we come to church with a tired body because we stay late last night playing video games or watching movies, a life full of worries because we live a lifestyle with too many demands/ambitions, unfinished homeworks, bitterness… and these things we bring into church that can “clog up/choke” our communication with God. (Có những lúc c/ta đến nhà thờ mệt mỏi vì tối hôm qua thức khuya xem phim, trí óc c/ta đầy những lo lắng vì sống quá phức tạp, chưa kịp làm xong bài vở, hay cả những nỗi hận thù đau thương chưa giải quyết xoá đi… và những thứ này làm nghẹt ngòi sự tương giao giữa mình với Chúa để có thể nghe rõ tiếng của Ngài.)
> We need to prepare our heart well before we come to church every Sunday, so we can clearly hear exactly what God wants to speak to each of us. (Nghe được tiếng Chúa không có gì là khó, nhưng mỗi người c/ta phải luôn sửa soạn tấm lòng lắng nghe tiếng Chúa mỗi khi đến nhóm.)
> And everyday living, our heart should be full of the awareness of God Who is alive and active around us, by the reminder of the scriptures to hear Him. (Mỗi ngày c/ta sống phải nhận biết những việc Chúa đang muốn nói với mình và hành động trong sự nhắc nhở của lời Kinh Thánh mình đã học biết.)
IV. Ready to Obey
> Not just hearing but we must also ready to obey, to follow the voice of the Shepherd. (Không phải chỉ nghe thôi, nhưng chiên cần phải làm gì nữa để đến được “đồng cỏ xanh tươi?” Có động từ “theo sau” người chăn nữa.)
> Verse 4 – “The shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all the sheep, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” (Trong câu 4 có chép rõ – “Khi người đã đem chiên ra hết, thì đi trước, chiên theo sau, vì chiên quen tiếng người.”)
> God doesn’t just speak to us for nothing, but for us to listen and obey His instructions. (Chúa không gọi c/ta làm chơi, nhưng có sứ mạng trao cho mình để mỗi c/ta biết vâng lời làm theo.)
# The beautiful hymn we sang this morning tells the whole truth about a Christian life that can be summarized in two verbs: “Trust and Obey.” (Sáng nay c/ta hát bài Thánh Ca tóm tắt mục đích cho đời sống của mỗi con cái Chúa đó là “Tin cậy & Vâng Lời.”)
> Is there any great hero of faith in the Bible that doesn’t obey God? (Có vị anh hùng đức tin nào trong Kinh Thánh mà không sẵn sàng vâng theo tiếng Chúa gọi mình không?)
# In Hebrews 11:7 – “By faith Noah, when warned about things (great flood) not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family…” (Trong Hêbêrơ 11:7 – “Bởi đức tin, Nô-ê được Chúa mách bảo cho về những việc chưa thấy, và người thành tâm kính sợ, đóng một chiếc tàu để cứu nhà mình...”)
# In Hebrews 11:8 – “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Trong Hêbêrơ 11:8 – “Bởi đức tin, Áp-ra-ham vâng lời Chúa gọi, đi đến xứ mình sẽ nhận làm cơ nghiệp: người đi mà không biết mình đi đâu.”)
> If we come here, listen and know that God is speaking to us, but we go home and don’t obey then what kind of sheep are we? (Nếu c/ta đến đây nghe tiếng Chúa phán với mình, nhưng về nhà không chịu vâng lời làm theo thì c/ta là nhóm chiên nào? “Baaaaah!”)
> Sometimes I believe that God will stop speaking to us for a while, we come to church and hear nothing; the reason because we haven’t done what He has told us from yesterday, from last week’s sermon or Bible study. (Tôi thiết nghĩ rằng có khi c/ta đến nhà thờ nhưng không nghe thấy Chúa phán gì với mình hết, lý do có thể là vì mình chưa bắt đầu vâng lời làm theo những điều mà Chúa đã phán với mình hôm qua, hay tuần trước rồi trong bài giảng hay bài học Kinh Thánh.)

> Prepare your heart always with the full awereness of knowing God is alive & active around us.

Hearing God
John 10:1-5
Are you growing spiritually? What is the process of the spiritual growth? You are getting older… doesn’t mean that you are growing and matured in Christ. The spiritual maturity is a simple and continuous process including the following steps: Hear God, understand His call, obey daily, and bear fruits. Some Christians do not even pass the first step of hearing God; that’s why there is no transformation in their lives. God always wants to speak to us; that’s not the problem, but do we listen to His voice? Do we come to church with an expectation wanting God to speak to us individually, and not the person sits next to us? In the old times, God communicated with His people in many ways: audible voices through dreams and visions, or non-verbal means through prophets, or angels. But today, God speaks to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. We are blessed to have the whole Bible - the written words are the revelation of Jesus that God wants to speak to us. Listening to the teaching words of Jesus is hearing God because Jesus is God in human form. God uses other means through the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to speak to us. Still another way God speaks to us today is through prayer, that is when the Holy Spirit impresses thoughts of God’s wills in our mind and heart as we concentrate in hearing God. Even through difficult circumstances, the Holy Spirit reminds us the scriptures that God loves, cares and readily to help if we call upon Him. So, through the Bible study and prayer, we can hear God speaking to us. Unfortunately, many Christians living today don’t even have a daily devotion time of reading the Bible and praying; so they are living a life of broken communication with God and find no peace for their soul.
The parable of Jesus about the good Shepherd paints a picture of an intimate relationship between the sheep and their shepherd. How can the sheep find the green grass and quiet springs? The only way is by listening to their Shepherd’s voice and follow Him. With this intimate relationship with God through reading the Bible and prayer, we can clearly recognize His voice, not getting mixed-up, because there are also other voices from the devil, the world, and even from the desires of our own flesh. Sheep that belong to and know the Shepherd should recognize His voice and guard themselves from all other voices. This is not just the “knowing about,” but the deep knowledge with an understanding heart of Who God is and what He speaks to us about. This is the key for discernment is the more you spend time with the Shepherd, the clearer you can know His voice, and can discern when it is not. There are times that the sheep do not hear the shepherd’s voice because of their stubbornness and busy-ness. Sometimes our mind is full of many distractions from the world and our heart has many idols that there is no room to hear God. God may allow some “difficult” situations happened to us, so we must stop and begin to hear Him calling us, and response: “Lord! Here I am. Speak, for your servant is listening.” We need to prepare our heart well before we come to church every Sunday, so we can clearly hear exactly what God wants to speak to each of us.
Not just hearing but we must also ready to obey, to follow the voice of the Shepherd. God doesn’t just speak to us for nothing, but for us to listen and obey the instructions. Is there any great hero of faith in the Bible that doesn’t obey God? Sometimes I believe that God will stop speaking to us for a while, we come to church and hear nothing; the reason because we haven’t done what He has told us from yesterday, from last week’s sermon or Bible study.
