An Unwavering Faith

(Giô-suê 6:22-25)

 

“Bấy giờ, Giô-suê nói cùng hai người đã đi do thám xứ mà rằng: Hãy vào trong nhà kỵ nữ, biểu nàng và mọi người thuộc về nàng đi ra, y như hai ngươi đã thề cùng nàng. 23 Vậy, hai người trai trẻ đã đi do thám xứ, bèn vào biểu Ra-háp, cha mẹ nàng, anh em, và mọi vật chi thuộc về nàng đi ra; hai người đem hết thảy gia quyến nàng ra, và để ở ngoài trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên. 24 Đoạn, chúng phóng hỏa cái thành, và mọi vật ở trong, chỉ để bạc, vàng và món chi bằng đồng, bằng sắt, nhập vào kho đền của Đức Giê-hô-va. 25 Vậy, Giô-suê bảo tồn sự sống của Ra-háp là kỵ nữ, luôn nội nhà của cha nàng, và mọi vật chi thuộc về nàng; nàng ở giữa Y-sơ-ra-ên cho đến ngày nay, vì nàng có giấu sử giả mà Giô-suê đã sai do thám Giê-ri-cô.”

(Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.)

 

I. Hall of Faith

 

> Three main essentials for building up a Christian life are… faith, hope and love. (Ba cốt yếu quan trọng để xây dựng đời sống của một người cơ đốc… đó là đức tin, sự trông cậy và tình yêu thương.)

> Today we will study about faith… in an awkward way, because it comes from the faith of a prostitute, named Rahab. (Hôm nay c/ta sẽ học hỏi về đức tin một cách hơi bất thường, là vì học về đức tin của một người kỵ nữ, một cô gái điếm... có tên là Raháp.)

> God’s way sometimes seems to be obscure, meaning difficult to understand, not as we commonly see it; That’s why the Bible in Isaiah 55:8-9 God said – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Đường lối của Chúa đôi khi thật khó hiểu, không đi theo sự suy nghĩ bình thường của c/ta, cho nên sách Êsai 55 có chép – “Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Ý tưởng ta chẳng phải ý tưởng các ngươi, đường lối các ngươi chẳng phải đường lối ta. Vì các từng trời cao hơn đất bao nhiêu, thì đường lối ta cao hơn đường lối các ngươi, ý tưởng ta cao hơn ý tưởng các ngươi cũng bấy nhiêu.”)

 

> You probably already know that in the Bible - the book of Hebrews Chapter 11… is called the “hall of faith” listing many heroes’ names of faith. (Có lẽ ai ở trong Chúa lâu đều biết trong Kinh Thánh sách Hêbêrơ đoạn 11… là chỗ có danh sách của nhiều những người anh hùng đức tin.)

# In this roster we read the names of famous biblical characters… such as Abraham, Enoch, Moses, David, Gideon… (Trong sách đây, c/ta thấy có tên của Ápbraham, Hênóc, Môise, Đavít, dũng sĩ Ghiđêôn…)

> In more than 15 names, there are only 2 woman mentioned, one is Sarah – Abraham’s wife because of her faith to believe in God that He would give her strength to conceive a son at an old age; and the other woman name was Rahab, according to Joshua 2:1 was a harlot in Jericho. (Trong vòng khoãng 15 tên được nhắc đến thì chỉ có 2 người là phụ nữ: Thứ nhất là Sara - vợ của Ápbraham, vì bà tin cậy vào lời Chúa hứa ban cho bà sức để sanh con khi đã quá tuổi gìa; còn người phụ nữ thứ hai là Raháp, theo Giôsuê 2:1 cho biết là một kỵ nữ.)

 

> How could a prostitute name be placed in the hall of faith? (Làm thế nào mà tên của một người kỵ nữ lại được đặt vào danh sách của những người anh hùng đức tin được?)

> May be God made a mistake, or this would help us to understand about the wonderful grace of God? (Có thể Chúa lẫn lộn, hay điều này giúp cho c/ta hiểu lẽ mầu nhiệm của ân điển Chúa chăng?)

 

 

II. Rahab’s Faith

 

> Let’s first find out who was Rahab, and what kind of faith that she had. (Trước hết c/ta hãy xem coi Raháp là ai, và bà đã có đức tin như thế nào?)

 

> Background – after 40 years wandering in the desert because of their sins, God was about to give His people the promised land. (Bối cảnh sau 40 năm lưu lạc trong đồng vắng, thời điểm này là lúc Đức Chúa Trời sắp ban đất hứa cho dân sự Ngài, y như lời Chúa đã hứa.)

> Through the leadership of Joshua, the Jewish people were about to cross the Jordan river to conquer the first city named Jericho. (Qua sự lãnh đạo của Giôsuê, dân sự Chúa sắp sửa tiến quân qua sông Giôđanh để đánh lấy thành phố đầu tiên có tên là Giêricô.)

> Jericho was a fortified city with high walls that was not easy to invade; at the same time Israel had no weapons that would be capable of taking down a city like Jericho. (Thành này rất là kiên cố với những tường thành cao không dễ chiếm lấy; Vả lại dân sự Chúa không có những vũ khí chi đặc biệt để có thể chiếm lấy thành được.)

> Joshua sent out 2 spies to explore the land before they attacked the city. (Trước khi đó thì Giôsuê đã sai 2 thám tử lẽn vào dò xét thành Giêricô.)

 

> The king of Jericho found out about the 2 spies… so they searched the city and tried to arrest them. (Vua Giêricô khám phá ra điều này, bèn ra lệnh truy nã để bắt 2 người thám tử đó.)

> The 2 spies ran into Rahab’s house and she hid them on the roof top of her house. (Hai vị thám tử chạy trốn vào nhà của kỵ nữ Raháp và được cô bảo vệ đem dấu trên nóc nhà mình.)

> Later, she used a scarlet (brilliant red color) cord to let the 2 men down from her window of the house next to the walls, and they returned home safely. (Sau này Raháp dùng một sợi dây thừng màu đỏ rực… thòng 2 người thám tử qua cửa sổ thoát ra khỏi thành và trở về chỗ mình an toàn.)

 

> Why did Rahab do that? Where was her patriotism? (Tại sao Raháp lại dám liều dấu 2 người thám tử này và giúp họ thoát khỏi được? Tinh thần yêu tổ quốc của cô ở đâu?)

> Because Rahab made a decision to place her faith in the God of Israel. (Lý do là vì Raháp đã quyết định tin vào Chúa quyền năng của dân Ysơraên)

> Did she act blindfully? Not at all. (Có phải cô tin Chúa một cách mù quáng không? Không như vậy.)

 

1) Faith comes by Hearing

> First, in Joshua 2:9-11 said that she heard about the God of Israel, about all the things He did to other nations when the Israelites came out of Egypt and travelled in the desert – “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below." (Trong Giôsuê 2 có chép lý do Raháp tin là vì có nghe biết về những việc Đức Chúa Trời đã làm – “Trước khi hai người do thám chưa nằm ngủ, nàng leo lên mái nhà, mà nói rằng: Tôi biết rằng Đức Giê-hô-va đã ban cho các ông xứ này, sự kinh khủng vì cớ các ông đã bắt lấy chúng tôi, và cả dân của xứ đều sờn lòng trước mặt các ông. Vì chúng tôi có hay khi các ông ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, thì Đức Giê-hô-va đã khiến nước Biển đỏ bày khô trước mặt các ông, và điều các ông đã làm cho Si-hôn và Óc, hai vua dân A-mô-rít, ở bên kia sông Giô-đanh, mà các ông đã diệt đi. Chúng tôi có hay điều đó, lòng bèn tan ra, chẳng ai trong chúng tôi còn can đảm trước mặt các ông nữa; vì Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời các ông là Đức Chúa Trời ở trên trời cao kia, và ở dưới đất thấp này.”)

> More than just to fear the great God in heaven above and in earth beneath, Rahab believed that the Lord had given Jericho to the Israelites. (Không phải Raháp chỉ kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời mà thôi, nhưng cô nhận biết và tin rằng Ngài sẽ ban thành Giêricô cho người Ysơraên.)

 

> She did not act blind-fully, but her faith was rooted in what she had heard about God. (Cô không có tin một cách mù quáng, nhưng dựa trên những gì cô đã nghe nói về Đức Chúa Trời.)

# Romans 10:17 said – “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Y như sách Rô-ma 10:17 có chép – “Như vậy, đức tin đến bởi sự người ta nghe, mà người ta nghe, là khi lời của Đấng Christ được rao giảng.”)

> Rahab had no direct knowledge of anything she had been told. Her faith was based on the reports of others. (Raháp chưa bao giờ thấy trực tiếp những việc Đức Chúa Trời đã làm, cô chỉ nghe tin qua những người khác nói. Đức tin của cô dựa trên những gì người khác báo cáo cho biết.)

> My faith and yours work in much the same way: We depend on an indirect knowledge and the reports from others… that are recorded in the Bible. (Thật ra đức tin của tôi và bạn cũng vậy: đức tin dựa trên những gì người khác nói về Chúa… có chép xuống trong sách Kinh Thánh.)

# The Bible tells me that God loved me so much that He gave His Son to die on a cross and that if I just believe on Him I can be saved; I wasn’t there to see the cross where Jesus died, but I believed. (Kinh thánh nói Chúa yêu thương tôi, Ngài hy sinh Con Ngài là Cứu Chúa Giê-xu chết trên cây thập tự và nếu tôi tin Ngài thì được cứu; tôi chưa bao giờ thấy thập tự gía nơi Chúa đã chết, nhưng tôi chọn tin điều này là lẽ thật.)

# I heard that Jesus lived, that He died on a cross for me, that He was buried in a borrowed tomb, that He rose from the dead and is sitting at the right hand of God the Father; yet I have never seen the risen Christ; but I believed because the Bible told me so. (Tôi nghe biết Chúa chết, chôn và đã sống lại, hiện ra với các môn đồ mình; tôi chưa bao giờ thấy chính mắt Chúa hiện ra, nhưng tôi tin lời thuật lại của các môn đồ Ngài là đúng.)

# The Bible says that Jesus is coming back to receive all those who call on His Name and take us to heaven; Yet I have never been to heaven to verify it, but I do believe. (Kinh Thánh chép Chúa Giê-xu sẽ trở lại một ngày để ban nước thiên đàng cho mọi kẻ tin; tôi chưa thấy thiên đàng là như thế nào, nhưng tôi chọn tin lời Chúa hứa theo như sách Kinh Thánh đã chép.)

 

2) Alone Faith

> Secondly, Rahab’s act of faith was a “lone ranger,” because no one else was willing to believe in God in that country at that time; except her. (Điều thứ hai, Raháp tin Chúa một cách cô lập, chỉ một mình, bởi vì trong lúc đó không ai trong thành bằng lòng tin cậy vào Chúa của người Ysơraên.)

> The city of Jericho was about to be attacked: within its walls, many people knew well that if the Israelites stormed their city, they would all be put to death; But yet strangely, there was not one of them who even asked for mercy, except this single woman, who had been a harlot among the multitude. (Có lẽ mọi người trong thành đều nghe tin dân Ysơraên sẽ chiếm lấy Giêricô, họ sẽ bị tiêu diệt, nhưng không có một ai cầu xin hay đầu hàng dân Ysơraên, chỉ có một mình Raháp mà thôi.)

 

> It is the easiest thing in the world to believe as everybody else believes – following the crowd, but the difficulty is to believe something alone; and I think this is greatness of her faith. (Nếu tin một điều gì hợp theo với đám động thì dễ rồi, nhưng tin một điều gì mà chẳng có ai theo mình… thì đó là một điều rất khó làm, phải không?)

> Rahab stood alone in believing in the God of Israel. (Raháp tin Chúa một mình.)

 

> Faith requires an unwavering decision to believe in God that may separate you out from the crowd, even your family and relatives. (Đức tin nơi Chúa đòi hỏi một sự quyết định nhất quyết, không dời đổi mà có thể phân rẽ c/ta ra khỏi đám đông người.)

> There are times the greatest hinder for us to believe in God is the pressures of our family members, our relatives, the loved ones, and close friends; but we must choose to believe in God. (Có khi c/ta phải đối diện với sự cản trở hay những áp lực của chính những người thân trong gia đình mình; nhưng c/ta phải dứt khoát chọn tin Chúa.)

# Tuan told me since the time he accepted Christ, his friends in Vietnam texted and mocked at him. But that is just the price of faith that we all have to carry our cross and follow Jesus. (Em Tuấn ở đây chia xẻ với tôi từ lúc em đến tiếp nhận Chúa Giê-xu, những người bạn thân của em bên Việt-nam gởi text qua chọc quê em; nhưng đó chỉ là cái gía c/ta phải trả để quyết tâm vác thập tự tin theo Chúa.)

 

# People living in a Muslims country, making a decision to believe in Jesus is an extremely difficult one, because this can mean rejection, isolation in jails, kicking out the house, and even facing death. (Những người sống ở các nước Hồi Gíao, sự quyết định tin Chúa là một điều rất khó khăn, vì họ có thể bị bỏ rơi, bị đuổi ra khỏi nhà, bị tù đầy & thường phải đối diện với sự truy nã bị giết chết.)

# We live in this free country that we would never understand that. (C/ta sống trong một đất nước quá tự do, c/ta không thể hiểu thấu điều này về gía phải trả cho đức tin của mình trong Chúa.)

> Rahab was willing to put her own life on the line… to exchange for the faith in God. (Raháp dám liều chính mạng sống của mình để tin cậy nơi Chúa.)

 

3) Faith produces Good Works

> Thirdly, Rahab’s faith followed with a real action to dare hiding the spies in her house. (Điều thứ ba, đức tin của Raháp sanh ra hành động thực tế, dám dấu 2 thám tử trong nhà mình.)

> Faith is liked a “seed” that you sow in the dirt; it must naturally sprout to become a shoot, then a trunk, branches, some flowers and good fruits. (Đức tin giống như một hạt giống c/ta gieo xuống đất thì tự nhiên phải mọc lên nụ, thân cây, cành lá, hoa và trái một ngày.)

# The apostle James said what about this natural growth of faith in James 2:17 – “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (Sứ đồ Giacơ chép gì? “Về đức tin, cũng một lẽ ấy; nếu đức tin không sanh ra việc làm, thì tự mình nó chết.”)

> He later verified lived & active faith using Rahab’s life in James 2:25-26 - “Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” (Giacơ sau này dùng chính thí dụ của Raháp để dạy dỗ về đức tin sống – “Đồng một thể ấy, kỵ nữ Ra-háp tiếp rước các sứ giả và khiến họ noi đường khác mà đi, người há chẳng phải cậy việc làm mà được xưng công bình sao? Vả, xác chẳng có hồn thì chết, đức tin không có việc làm cũng chết như vậy.”)

> This does not mean that her good works were the merits for God’s salvation, but that they were the evidence before men, which illustrated that she was truly a member of "the Household of Faith." (Đây không có nghĩa là c/ta được Chúa cứu vì công đức cá nhân của mình, nhưng việc lành theo sau là chứng cớ bày tỏ niềm tin của mình nay thật là con cái Đức Chúa Trời.)

> Rahab risked her life to protect the spies to prove the fact that she truly and already believed in God and His plans. (Việc làm của Raháp dấu thám tử là chứng cớ cô đã thật sự tin Chúa và chương trình của Ngài trong lòng của mình rồi.)

 

> We need to constantly check ourselves - Is our faith dead or alive? (C/ta cần luôn tự xét chính mình… coi xem đức tin của mình đang sống hay chết, có những việc lành gì theo sau không?)

# A region faced a serious drought and one Sunday the church members got together to pray and pray for rains, but the next Sunday came, there is only one youth came and brought the umbrella? Where is the real faith? (Câu chuyện ở một vùng kia bị cơn hạn hán lớn. Hội Thánh của Chúa nhóm lại thật đông trong một ngày Chúa Nhật tha thiết cầu xin Chúa ban mưa xuống lại. Nhưng lạ là Chúa Nhật tuần sau, chỉ có một em thanh niên đến nhóm đem theo cái dù che mưa với mình thôi?)

 

4) Faith that Saves

> Fourthly, Rahab’s faith is a saving kind of faith. (Điều thứ tư, đức tin của Raháp nơi Chúa là loại cứu cô được.)

 

> Before hiding the spies, Rahab said to them – “Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” (Trước khi dấu 2 thám tử, Raháp có giao điều kiện với họ có chép trong Giôsuê 2:12-13 – “Vậy bây giờ, vì tôi đã làm nhân cho hai ông, thì hai ông cũng phải làm nhân lại cho nhà cha tôi; hãy chỉ Đức Giê-hô-va mà thề cùng tôi, và cho một dấu quả quyết rằng các ông sẽ để cha mẹ, anh em, chị em tôi, và hết thảy người bà con của họ đều còn sống, cùng cứu chúng tôi khỏi chết.”)

> After they left, she just had to trust that the spies would keep their promise. (Sau khi họ đi rồi thì Raháp chỉ biết tin nơi lời hứa của họ mà thôi.)

> She didn’t have any papers, sealed documents, or a hostage to force the spies in keeping their promise; but somehow she just believed that the people of this great God would do it. (Cô không có một chứng nhận gì qua giấy tờ, hay sổ sách để chắc chắn rằng 2 người sẽ giữ lời mình hứa, cô chỉ tin vào họ là dân tộc của Chúa rất lớn mà thôi.)

 

> What happened if the spies came home and told Joshua and he would say: “Are you out of your mind? Save a gentile woman? Worse than that - she is a prostitute? Don’t you know that according to Deuteronomy 23:17 (Moses’ laws) – “There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.” How can she live among us?” (Nhỡ mà Giôsuê không chịu nghe theo họ để cứu một người đàn bà ngoại, mà còn là một kỵ nữ nữa, nhất là khi luật pháp của Môise có chép trong sách PTLLK – “Không một người Y-sơ-ra-ên nào, dù đàn ông hay đàn bà, được phép hành nghề mãi dâm trong các đền miếu.)

# Rahab’s redemption was risky and totally contingent upon the promise of the spies. (Sự cứu chuộc của cô thật là một việc liều lĩnh, chỉ dựa trên lời hứa của 2 vị thám tử mà thôi.)

 

> But the fact was that at the end of the day - her faith in God saved her. (Nhưng cuối cùng, đức tin của cô đã cứu cô.)

> Before Joshua gave a commandment to destroy Jericho city, what order did he gave to his men  recorded in Joshua 6:22-24 – “Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her. So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. Then they burned the whole city and everything in it…” (Trước khi hủy phá thành Giêricô Giôsuê đã ra lệnh gì? “Bấy giờ, Giô-suê nói cùng hai người đã đi do thám xứ mà rằng: Hãy vào trong nhà kỵ nữ, biểu nàng và mọi người thuộc về nàng đi ra, y như hai ngươi đã thề cùng nàng. Vậy, hai người trai trẻ đã đi do thám xứ, bèn vào biểu Ra-háp, cha mẹ nàng, anh em, và mọi vật chi thuộc về nàng đi ra; hai người đem hết thảy gia quyến nàng ra, và để ở ngoài trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Đoạn, chúng phóng hỏa cái thành, và mọi vật ở trong,) 

 

> Her faith in God saved her and qualified her for the “hall of fame” status. (Ngày hôm đó, đức tin liều lĩnh của Raháp nơi Chúa đã cứu cô và xếp cô vào hạng của những người anh hùng đức tin.)

> And not only Rahab, but her whole family, preserved from the burning of Jericho which immediately followed. (Không phải chỉ mạng sống của cô thôi, nhưng cả gia đình của cô, không bị diệt trong sự phóng hỏa cả thành sau đó.)

> More than that, in Joshua 6:25 tells us, Rahab & her families "dwelt in Israel from that day one," and of course she was no longer a harlot. (Không phải vậy thôi, Kinh Thánh chép từ ngày đó, cô & gia đình cô được “ở giữa vòng những người Y-sơ-ra-ên…” và đương nhiên không còn là kỵ nữ nữa.)

 

 

III. Faith to Believe (Three points)

 

1) Salvation is NOT depended on who you were, or what you did, but are you willing to believe in Jesus, God’s Son Who died for your sins on the cross, even your friend does not believe that. (Sự cứu chuộc Chúa ban không lệ thuộc vào địa vị của c/ta là ai, hay những gì c/ta đã làm, nhưng chỉ bởi c/ta có đã tin vào lời Chúa hứa trong Con Đức Chúa Trời, Chúa Giê-xu mà thôi.)

# Doesn’t matter whether you were born in a royal and religious family or a refugee and uneducated family; doesn’t matter what was your occupation, how high your salary is, or don’t know how to read, how much money you have given to the poor, what crimes you committed… but one condition only - have you placed your faith in the works of Jesus Christ? (Không cần biết bạn sanh ra từ một gia đình nào, giàu có hay thất học, không cần biết bạn làm nghề gì, làm lương cao bao nhiêu, hay kể cả đã phạm những tội ác nào… chỉ có một điều kiện mà thôi, bạn có đã đặt lòng tin trọn vẹn nơi Cứu Chúa Giê-xu chưa?)

> In the last day, the only question God would ask you before you can enter heaven is not how much money you had have in the bank, what kind of house you have lived in, how high was your education, but “What did you do with My Son I sent down to this earth to die for your sins?” (Trong ngày tận thế, Đức Chúa Trời sẽ không hỏi bạn ngày xưa mình có bao nhiêu tiền trong bank, học cao như thế nào, lái xe loại gì, Iphone mấy… để được vào nước thiên đàng, nhưng Chúa chỉ hỏi – “Ngươi đã làm gì với Con Ta đã sai đến chết cho tội lỗi của ngươi?”)

> The people of Jericho perished because they "believed not," and sadly, the same thing will happen at the coming last days. (Số đông người trong thành Giêricô bị diệt mất vì họ chẳng tin, và điều đó rất buồn cũng sẽ xảy ra trong ngày tận thế sắp xẩy đến.)

 

> Just believe in Jesus and His promises and you will be saved. (Chỉ hãy tin cậy nơi Chúa Giê-xu và lời Ngài hứa thì bạn sẽ được cứu.)

> Just enter in the “house of grace” in Christ, and wait… then you will be saved; anybody outside the house will be destroyed. (Chỉ hãy bằng lòng bước vào căn nhà ân điển của Chúa trong Đấng Christ, thì bạn sẽ được cứu; còn ở ngoài thì sẽ bị hư mất đời đời.)

> You can start anywhere and at anytime, doesn’t matter what your “credit score” is. (Bạn có thể bắt đầu ngay hôm nay, ngay lúc này, không cần biết hạnh kiểm cũ của bạn như thế nào?)

2) Faith must receive the gift of grace, because it does not come automatically. (Bạn phải mở lòng để tiếp nhận món quà cứu chuộc, vì sự cứu rỗi không tự nhiên đến với mọi người.)

# Rahab even though believed in God, but in order to be spared from death, she had to tie the line of scarlet cord in her house widow that the men had escaped from, so the men of Joshua knew which house to spare, as said in Joshua 2:17-22 – “Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house… 21 So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.” (Chính Raháp mặc dầu tin Chúa, nhưng để thoát chết bà vẫn phải buộc một sợi giây màu đỏ ở cánh cửa sổ… để người Ysơraên biết mà cứu cô và tất cả những người ở trong gia đình cô.)

# Rahab’s relatives even though they believed in her persuasion, they had to obey by entering her house and not going outside into the street during the fighting to be spared. (Kể cả những người thân của Raháp cũng phải bằng lòng bước vào nhà cô và ở trong đó thì mới được thoát chết.)

 

> God’s grace is given freely, there is no price tag; but you must receive for yourself. (Ơn cứu chuộc Chúa ban cho không điều kiện, nhưng chính bạn phải bằng lòng nhận lấy cho mình.)

 

3) Even more amazing than that, Matthew 1:1-6 show Rahab’s place in the lineage of the Son of God starting at Abraham - “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers… 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David.” (Điều lạ lùng hơn nữa, trong sách Ma-thi-ơ 1:5 có chép Raháp còn là ai? “Sanh-môn bởi Ra-háp sanh Bô-ô. > Although no one is perfect, especially Rahab’s life of making a living was disgraceful and her lying was sinful; But when Rahab had the opportunity she demonstrated her faith in the Lord, she placed her own life on the line to save the spies because of the fear of God. (Mặc dầu không ai hoàn toàn hết, nhất là Raháp là người có lối sống tồi tệ theo thói của dân tộc ngoại, kể cả lời nói dối của cô, nhưng khi có cơ hội, cô đã tin cậy vào Đức Chúa Trời mà đem dấu 2 vị thám tử.)

> In God’s boundless grace that we will not comprehend all in this side of heaven, God accepted her trust in Him, rescued her family, and used her for His own divine purposes as a model of faith and an ancestor of the Messiah. (Ân điển lạ lùng của Chúa mà c/ta không thể hiểu hết bên phía thế giới này, nhưng Chúa chấp nhận niềm tin của Raháp và sự vâng phục của cô, cứu cô, mà còn dùng cô trong ý thánh của Chúa, để bày tỏ quyền năng cứu chuộc lạ lùng của Ngài đến với mọi người, kể cả những kẻ xấu xa tồi tệ nhất.)

> The ultimate compliment to such faith is written in Hebrews 11:16 - “Therefore God is NOT ashamed to be called their God.” (Vì vậy mà Kinh Thánh trong Hêbêrơ 11:16 có chép – “Đức Chúa Trời không hổ thẹn mà xưng mình là Đức Chúa Trời của họ.)

> That is why God is not ashamed to include Rahab in the Hall of Faith, doesn’t matter who she was before. (Đó chính là lý do Chúa không hổ thẹn mà tiếp nhận Raháp vào danh sách của những người anh hùng đức tin, không cần biết đời sống của của cô ngày trước như thế nào.)

 

# Jeffrey Dahmer in Kentucky lived a very sinful life. He was a serial killer, rapist, cannibalism, homosexuality… (giết thầm, hiếp dâm, ăn thịt người, đồng tính luyến ái). A total body count was 17 men and boys and he would often do horrible things (điều ác) to them. Not only did he dismember his victims & keep body parts of them in a freezer (cắt bộ phận của họ để vào tủ lạnh ăn).

> While in prison, Jeff realized what a horrible life he lived. He repented of his sins and began to talk with Pastor Roy Ratcliffe about accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

> In 1994, Jeffrey D. was baptized and become a fellow brother in Christ (con cái Chúa).

> Sadly, Jeff was murdered in prison by being beat to death.

> Many people including some pastors wonder how can God save such a wicked person? (Một số người kể cả các vị mục sư thắc mắc Đức Chúa Trời có thể cứu một người độc ác như vậy được không?)

> Have you seen a sign on many tomb stones – “RIP?”

> Will we truly be “Rest in peace?” (yên nghỉ ngàn thu)

> The truth in Hebrews 9:27 is that – “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,” (Hê-bơ-rơ 9:27 – “Theo như đã định cho loài người phải chết một lần, rồi chịu phán xét,”)

> But the great God with full of mercy and love has a promise to save us from the eternal judgment and punishment of sins, just as the promise by God through the Israelites’ spies to spare Rahab and her family.

> If you are willing to believe in Jesus, God’s Son, you will be saved, you will be spared, all your sins will be erased, cancelled for ever, and more than that, you can have eternal life, and dwelt in God’s kingdom of heaven one day.

 

> The gift is given freely, but you must accept it for yourself.

> You must tie your “scarlet cord” at the door of your heart… as a proof of your faith in the Lord Jesus.

> Scarlet is a brilliant red color; the fact that “the cord was red” reminds us of the only blood of Jesus can save us.

# 1 Peter 1:18-19 - “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (“vì biết rằng chẳng phải bởi vật hay hư nát như bạc hoặc vàng mà anh em đã được chuộc khỏi sự ăn ở không ra chi của tổ tiên truyền lại cho mình, bèn là bởi huyết báu Đấng Christ, dường như huyết của chiên con không lỗi không vít,”)

> You must have Jesus in your heart, only Him can save.

> When will you understand the only requirement of God for a person to be saved is to repent his sins and place his faith in Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

# Your past does not matter to God in the blood of His Son!

> You must repent and confess your sins to Him to be spared of the eternal death, but gain the eternal life.

 

> Do it today! Receive the gift. Trust in Jesus! Place your faith in Him now.

An Unwavering Faith

(Joshua 6:22-25)

 

“Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.”

 

Three main essentials for building up a Christian life are faith, hope and love. Today we will study about faith - where does it start and what benefit we can gain. We will learn about faith in an awkward way, because it comes from the faith of a prostitute, named Rahab. You probably already know that in the Bible - the book of Hebrews Chapter 11 is called the “hall of faith” listing many heroes’ names of faith. In this roster we read the names of famous biblical characters… such as Abraham, Enoch, Moses, David, Gideon… In more than 15 names in this chapter, there are only 2 woman names mentioned, one is Sarah – Abraham’s wife because of her faith to believe in God that He would give her strength to conceive a son at an old age; and the other woman name was Rahab according to Joshua 2:1 was a harlot in Jericho. How could a prostitute name be placed in the hall of faith? May be God made a mistake, or this would help us to understand about the wonderful grace of God? Who was Rahab, and what kind of faith that she had?

 

Background – after 40 years wandering in the desert because of their sins, God gave His people the promised land. Through the leadership of Joshua, the Jewish people were about to cross the Jordan river to conquer the first city named Jericho. Jericho was a fortified city with high walls that was not easy to invade. Joshua sent out 2 spies to explore the land before they attacked the city. The king of Jericho found out about the 2 spies so they searched the city and tried to arrest them. The 2 spies ran into Rahab’s house and she hid them on the roof top of her house. Later, she used a scarlet (brilliant red color) cord to let the 2 men down from her window of the house next to the walls, and they returned home safely. Why did Rahab do that? Where was her patriotism? Because Rahab made a decision to place her faith in the God of Israel. Did she act blindfully? Not at all. First, in Joshua 2:9-11 said that she heard about the God of Israel, about all the things He did to other nations when the Israelites came out of Egypt and travelled in the desert. Just believe in Jesus and His promises and you will be saved. Just enter in the “house of grace” in Christ, and wait then you will be saved; anybody outside the house will be destroyed. You can start anywhere and at anytime, doesn’t matter what your “credit score” is.
