(Steps in Experiencing a Spiritual Revival)
(2 Các Vua 22:1-2/23:25)
“22:1-2 - Khi Giô-si-a lên làm vua, được tám tuổi; người cai trị ba mươi mốt năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem… 2 Người làm điều thiện trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, đi theo trọn con đường của Đa-vít, tổ phụ mình, không tẻ tách hoặc về bên hữu, hoặc về bên tả. … 23:25 - Trước Giô-si-a, chẳng có một vua nào… hết lòng, hết ý, hết sức mình, mà trìu mến Đức Giê-hô-va, làm theo trọn vẹn luật pháp của Môi-se; và sau người cũng chẳng có thấy ai giống như người nữa.”
(22:1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years… 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left… 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.)
> As a church, we talk a lot about revival, we desire a great awakening; it seems that every time the church gets together we pray for a revival… but the question always is - how can we truly experience a spiritual renewal? (C/ta nói nhiều về sự phục hưng, c/ta mong được đổi mới; hình như mỗi lần Hội Thánh nhóm lại là c/ta cầu nguyện cho Hội Thánh được phục hưng… nhưng câu hỏi luôn vẫn là làm sao mỗi người c/ta thật kinh nghiệm được sự phục hưng tâm linh đây?)
# It seems as we are longing for a revival, but we continue experiencing broken relationships, falling into many addictions/temptations, controlled by the worldly pleasures, not being fulfilling our Christian duties, even worse than that - living a hyprocrite life, meaning we don’t walk the talk… (Hình như c/ta thật mong có sự phục hưng, nhưng vẫn cứ gặp phải những mối liên hệ đổ vỡ, sa ngã vào những sự nghiện ngập, bị điều khiển bởi những thú vui của trần tục, chưa làm trọn phận sự của mình trong ý Chúa, và có khi còn sống gỉa hình nữa…)
# Paul expressed this hopeless of human weakness in Romans 7:24 - “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (Chính sứ đồ Phaolô cũng kinh nghiệm sự yếu đuối của xác thịt và đã thốt lên – “Khốn nạn cho tôi! Ai sẽ cứu tôi thoát khỏi thân thể hay chết nầy?”)
> So, what are some of the practical steps we can do… to truly experience a soul revival, overcoming our weakness? (Có những bước thực hành nào chính mỗi người c/ta có thể làm, để thật sự kinh nghiệm sự phục hưng cho đời sống tâm linh của mình đây?)
> Learn from the life of a great king, named Josiah in 2 kings 22-23. (Hãy học biết những phương cách này qua đời sống của vị vua có tên là Giôsia trong sách 2 Các Vua 22-23.)
I. Who was Josiah?
> Who was Josiah? (Vua Giôsia là ai?)
> King Josiah was Judah's last good king before their Southern kingdom was destroyed by Babylonian Empire in 587 BC. (Giôsia là vị vua tốt lành cuối cùng của nước Guiđa miền Nam, trước khi họ bị dân Babylôn chiếm đánh và làm phu tù vào năm 587 BC sau này.)
> In 2 Kings 22:1 said that Josiah became king when he was only 8 years old – “Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years… 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.” (“Khi Giô-si-a lên làm vua, mới được có tám tuổi; người cai trị ba mươi mốt năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem… 2 Người làm điều thiện trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, đi theo trọn con đường của Đa-vít, tổ phụ mình, không tẻ tách hoặc về bên hữu, hoặc về bên tả.”)
# In 2 Chronicles 34:3-7 said - At age 15, Josiah “began to seek after the God of David;” At age 19, he undertook reforms to stop idol worship and get rid all the evils associated with it. (“Năm thứ tám đời vua trị vì, khi hãy còn trẻ tuổi, thì người khởi sự tìm kiếm Đức Chúa Trời của Đa-vít, tổ phụ người; năm thứ mười hai, vua khởi dọn sạch Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, trừ bỏ những nơi cao, thần A-sê-ra, tượng chạm và tượng đúc.”)
> How could a little child govern/reform God’s people such righteously? (Làm thế nào một đứa trẻ có thể thống trị đất nước được tốt lành đạo đức như vậy?)
# Josiah’s reform shows the influence of even children at very young age… can have enormous potential to live for God and make a great impact for God’s kingdom. (Việc vua Giôsia cải thiện đất nước được như vậy, nói lên tiềm năng kể cả cho các trẻ em cũng có thể gây nên sự tác động/ảnh hưởng mạnh cho việc xây dựng một nền tảng đạo đức cho nước Chúa trên đất nữa.)
# That’s why VHBC places a lot of effort in teaching the Bible to children and conducts special VBS each year. (Vì hiểu sự quan trọng này Hội Thánh c/ta bỏ nhiều công khó trong việc dạy dỗ lời Chúa cho các trẻ em mỗi tuần, và luôn có những chương trình Thánh Kinh mùa Hè hữu ích mỗi năm.)
> Background - What was the spiritual condition of God’s people of that time? (Bối cảnh – tình trạng tâm linh của con dân Chúa lúc đó như thế nào mà cần sự phục hưng/cải cách?)
# They were the chosen nation by God and had a covenant with Him, as written in God’s laws – “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Họ là dân chọn riêng của Chúa, và có lời giao ước với Ngài đã được chép trong luật pháp như sau – “Ta là Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời ngươi, đã rút ngươi ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, là nhà nô lệ. 3 Trước mặt ta, ngươi chớ có các thần khác.”)
> But Judah committed all kinds of gross sins. (Nhưng dân sự Chúa đã phạm những tội ghê tởm.)
# They worshiped idols, set up many pagan altars and shrines all over the land, involved in many pagan ceremonies. (Họ thờ lạy các tà thần của dân ngoại, lập đủ các bàn thờ và miễu khắp nơi trong nước và cử hành những lễ nghi dâng hiến cho những tượng chạm, chọc giận Đức Chúa Trời.)
# In 2 Kings 23:7-10 said that God’s people set up shrines that were in the temple of the Lord with male prostitutes, and even threw their son and daughter in the fire to the idol Molek. This was worse than the abortion sin in our time. (Trong 2 Các Vua 23 có chép con dân Chúa lập những đền thờ có chứa “bọn đàn ông làm điếm ở trong đó… nơi các phụ nữ dệt vải cho nữ thần A-sê-ra;” chưa hết, họ còn “thiêu dâng con trai hay con gái mình trong lửa cho thần Mo-lóc.” Đây là những tội ghê tởm còn hơn vấn đề phá thai cho thời đại của c/ta nữa.)
> The abomination begun at the top, from the kings, leaders and priests who led God’s people into these idol worships. (Tội lỗi ghê tởm này bắt đầu từ ở trên, qua những vị vua, lãnh đạo, thầy tế lễ đã dẫn dụ dân sự Chúa đi vào những sự thờ lạy tà thần này.)
# Have you thought - how did our Vietnam country today fall into a totally depraving corrupted country? (Bạn có bao giờ suy nghĩ… lý do bắt đầu từ đâu mà nước Việt-nam của c/ta ngày nay đã rớt vào tình trạng suy đồi trụy lạc quá độ như vậy?)
> It begins from the top governing leaders, and the only way the “tide” can change is by the power of the Holy Spirit to reform these leaders; Other than that, there is nothing else could help. (Nó bắt đầu từ những vị lãnh đạo tham nhũng; và chỉ có một cách nước Viêtnam được biến cải khi Thần Linh Chúa cải hóa được tấm lòng của những vị lãnh đạo mà thôi. Đây là điều c/ta phải cầu nguyện.)
1) A Conviction for a Concern of the Spiritual Things
> A great revival begun with king Josiah: he had a great concern for God’s temple. (Sự phục hưng bắt đầu từ vua Giôsia: khi còn trẻ tuổi vua đã có sự quan tâm đến đền thờ của Chúa.)
> At age 25, Josiah decided to rebuild the temple of the LORD, which had been abandoned and neglected since the days of judge Jotham, a century earlier. (Khi đến 25 tuổi, vua quyết định tu bổ lại đền thờ của Đức Chúa Trời, mà đã bị bỏ bê từ đời các quan xét Giôtham, cách lúc đó khoãng 100 năm trước.)
> He hired builders and placed his secretary Shaphan and the high priest Hilkiah in charge of the work, as said in 2 Kings 22:3-5 - “In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary, Shaphan son of Azaliah… to “Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him get ready the money that has been brought into the temple of the Lord, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people. 5 Have them entrust it to the men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. And have these men pay the workers who repair the temple of the Lord.” (“Năm thứ mười tám đời Giô-si-a, vua sai thơ ký Sa-phan, con trai A-xa-lia, cháu Mê-su-lam, đến đền Đức Giê-hô-va, mà dặn rằng: 4 Hãy đi lên thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Hinh-kia, đếm bạc đã đem đến trong đền thờ của Đức Giê-hô-va, tức là bạc mà các người giữ cửa đền thờ đã thâu lấy nơi dân sự; 5 đoạn hãy giao bạc ấy cho những kẻ coi sóc việc đền thờ của Đức Giê-hô-va, để họ giao lại cho thợ sửa sang các nơi hư nứt của đền thờ.”)
> Many people today including Christians have no concern of the spiritual matters; they are only focusing on the temporary things, and enjoying all kinds of worldly pleasures. (Ngày hôm nay, vô số người kể cả con cái Chúa không còn có sự quan tâm gì đến vấn đề thuộc linh; họ chỉ biết đeo đuổi những gía trị tạm bợ của cải vật chất và tham hưởng những thú vui của trần thế.)
# “If it feels good, just do it” and they don’t care about the consequences to follow. (Nếu thấy sướng thì cứ làm, chẳng cần biết hậu qủa theo sau là gì.)
# Those who do tanning; they don’t care about the risk of skin cancer later, as long “I look good now?” (Có những người muốn có da ngâm đẹp, vào nằm trong những tiệm “tanning salon;” không cần biết vấn đề ung thư da, miễn là mình thấy đẹp và thu hút người khác là hay rồi.)
> They live only by sights, and not by faith, with an attitude “don’t care” for anything of God. (Họ chỉ biết sống bởi sự thấy bên ngoài, chứ chẳng phải đức tin và không quan tâm chi đến những điều thuộc của Chúa.)
> The first step to experience a revival – you must have a concern about your spiritual condition, your relationship between you and God. It must start here. (Bước đầu tiên để kinh nghiệm sự phục hưng tâm linh là c/ta phải có sự quan tâm về đời sống thuộc linh, mối liên hệ của mình với Chúa.)
> There must be a conviction in your heart wanting to change/to renew, because you recognize that your relationship between you and your God is broken, and drifted away. (C/ta phải cảm nhận sự cáo trách tâm linh muốn biến cải, đổi mới, vì nhận biết mối liên hệ giữa mình với Chúa đang bị suy đồi và trôi dạt.)
> Don’t you know that the main cause of every problems in the family relationships, at works, in church among Christians, in the government is always related to the weakening of the vertical relationship with God? (Bạn có biết lý do chính gây nên mọi đổ vở trong những mối liên hệ trong gia đình, tại sở làm, trong Hội Thánh Chúa, kể cả trong chính quyền… là do sự suy đồi của mối liên giữa mỗi người với Chúa không?)
> If this spiritual condition of us can be fixed, revived, then every horizontal relationship would be fine! (Nếu mối liên hệ bề dọc này được phục hưng đổi mới, thì tất cả những mối liên hệ bề ngang sẽ tốt đẹp mà thôi.)
> Do you have any concern of your spiritual condition right now? (Quí vị đang có quan tâm gì cho tình trạng tâm linh của mình không?)
> How is your relationship between you and God presently? Is it drifting away? Are you aware of it or you just don’t care? (Mối liên hệ của quí vị với Chúa ngay lúc nào ra sao? Có đang bị trôi dạt không hay là bạn không cần biết chi hết?)
2) Return to God’s Words
> When Josiah hired the workers to repair God’s temple, they found a book of the law. (Khi vua Giôsia sai những người sửa sang lại đền thờ, họ tìm được một cuốn sách luật pháp.)
> So they gave it to Hilkiah, who gave it to Shaphan, who brought it to King Josiah. (Họ đưa cho Hinhkia, và ông đưa cho thơ ký Saphan mà đem đến cho vua.)
> The book was the Bible — the first 5 books of our today Bible written by Moses. (Đây là cuốn sách luật pháp do Môise viết xuống, chứa đựng 5 sách đầu tiên trong Kinh thánh của c/ta ngày nay.)
> This Bible had been ignored and forgotten by previous generations for so long that no one even knew there was such a thing as a Bible! (Tình trạng suy đồi của dân sự Chúa đã quyên lãng luật pháp của Đức Chúa Trời đến nỗi chẳng còn ai biết đến Kinh Thánh là gì nữa.)
> As the secretary Shaphan read the Bible to King Josiah, he tore his robe — that was a sign of grief and repentance in their culture. (Sau khi đọc sách luật này thì vua Giôsia xé áo mình, làm dấu cho sự thống hối và ăn năn.)
> No doubt, Josiah knew that the LORD was angry with Judah, for they had long lived in sin, which was now revealed by the Bible they found. (Chắc rằng Giôsia đã bị cáo trách biết rằng Chúa đang nổi giận cùng dân Guiđa, vì họ chìm đắm trong tội lỗi đã lâu mà nay được vạch rõ ra trong lời Chúa.)
> King Josiah inquired God by seeking a prophet named Huldah, and she verified that the LORD was indeed angry with Judah for their pagan worship, as recorded in in 2 Kings 22:15-17 - Huldah said: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’” (Vua Giôsia tìm kiếm Chúa ngay bằng cách sai đi tìm một vị tiên tri tên là Hunđa, và người chứng nhận rằng: “Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên nói như vầy: Hãy nói với người sai các ngươi đến ta rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Ta sẽ dẫn tai họa trên chỗ này và trên dân cư nó, làm hoàn thành mọi lời của sách mà vua Giu-đa đã đọc. Bởi vì dân Giu-đa đã lìa bỏ ta, đốt hương cho các thần khác, chọc giận vì các công việc của tay chúng nó, nên cơn giận ta sẽ nổi lên cùng chỗ này, không hề nguôi.”)
> To desire for a revival, you must see your sins as God sees them in His words, and not based on your reasoning. (Muốn cảm nhận cần sự phục hưng tâm linh, c/ta phải nhận biết tội lỗi y như Chúa định theo lời của Ngài, chứ không theo sự suy luận riêng của mình.)
# If you compare yourself with a serial killer, a rapist, cheater, you would always look better and would never need any revival. (Nếu mình tự so sánh với một kẻ giết người, hiếp dâm, tham nhũng thì mình thấy lúc nào cũng tốt lành và không cần sự cải thiện nào hết, phải không?)
> After receiving the message, king Josiah assembled the population at Jerusalem and read the entire Bible aloud to them, a total of 187 chapters in our modern Bible, as recorded in 2 Kings 23:1-2 - “Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord.” (Sau khi nghe lời cáo trách từ vị tiên tri – “Vua bèn sai người nhóm hiệp hết thảy những trưởng lão Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem. Đoạn, vua đi lên đền thờ Đức Giê-hô-va, có hết thảy người Giu-đa, cả dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem, những thầy tế lễ, đấng tiên tri, cùng cả dân sự, vô luận nhỏ lớn, đều đi theo người. Người đọc cho chúng nghe các lời của sách giao ước, mà người ta đã tìm được trong đền thờ của Đức Giê-hô-va.” Tất cả 187 đoạn trong Kinh Thánh tân thời của c/ta.)
# I wonder if we do that today in church, how many people will still be here to listen? (Thử hỏi nếu Hội Thánh c/ta đọc hết những đoạn này sáng nay trong buổi nhóm thì có mấy người còn ở lại để nghe?)
> More than that, after finishing reading God’s words, king Josiah himself renewed the LORD's covenant, to obey all that was written in the Bible he had just read; He then invited the people to pledge themselves to the covenant, and they did as recorded in 2 Kings 23:3 – “The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.” (Hơn nữa, sau khi đọc xong – “Vua đứng trên tòa, lập giao ước trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, hứa đi theo Đức Giê-hô-va, hết lòng hết ý gìn giữ những điều răn, chứng cớ, và luật lệ của Ngài, và làm hoàn thành lời giao ước đã chép trong sách này. Cả dân sự đều ưng lời giao ước ấy.”)
> Do you see the importance of the revival must begin at the top leaders? (Quí vị lãnh đạo có thấy điều quan trọng ở đây không - sự phục hưng bắt đầu từ ở trên, bắt đầu từ những người lãnh đạo?)
> Leaders - are you thirsty for a revival? (Hỡi những vị lãnh đạo Hội Thánh Chúa, quí vị có đang đói khát cho sự phục hưng tâm linh bắt đầu từ mình không?)
# You must return to the words of God… and seek Him. (Quí vị phải trở lại với lời của Chúa và hết lòng tìm kiếm Ngài.)
> Without the God’s words, we would not be convicted to make a turn around from sins, and to renew our covenant with God. (Không có lời Chúa, c/ta không thể nào bắt đầu có sự cáo trách tâm linh mà biết quay trở lại với Ngài, làm mới lại lời giao ước của mình với Chúa.)
> You need to find your Bible and begin to read and inquire God to begin a revival. (C/ta cần tìm ra cuốn sách Kinh Thánh của mình, hãy đọc và tìm kiếm Chúa để kinh nghiệm sự phục hưng.)
# The problem for the church today is the problem of dusty Bibles, but well-used Iphone and TV remote control? (Nan đề của hội thánh chưa kinh nghiệm sự phục hưng là vì có quá nhiều những cuốn sách Kinh Thánh đang bị đóng bụi, trong khi đó thì những máy Iphone và máy điều khiển TV thì luôn được xử dụng đến mòn những con số?)
> One of the important roles of the Holy Spirit in John 14:26 is to “remind” us a need for a revival, but without the words of God, there is nothing the Holy Spirit can convict our sins to repent. (Vai trò quan trọng của Thánh Linh Chúa là nhắc nhở c/ta về nhu cầu cần phục hưng tâm linh, nhưng nếu c/ta không có lời Chúa trong lòng thì Thần Linh Chúa không có gì để cáo trách c/ta ăn năn hết?)
> Revival must begin with the prayer of repentance, convicted by God’s words, and the pledge to renew the covenant we had have with God – that is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Sự phục hưng bắt đầu bằng lời cầu nguyện ăn năn mà đã được cáo trách bởi lời của Chúa, và sự tái sát lại lời giao ước với Ngài, đó là “Ngươi hãy hết lòng, hết linh hồn, hết ý mà yêu mến Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời ngươi.”)
3) The process of Soul Cleaning
> Immediately, Josiah set upon a sweeping program to eliminate all pagan worships. (Vua Giôsia ngay lập tức bắt đầu chương trình dọn sạch các đền thờ, các miễu đã dùng cho việc thờ phượng đốt hương cho các tà thần, từ xứ Guiđa miền Nam cho đến Ysơraên miền Bắc.)
> A long list of things Josiah did recorded in 2 Kings 23:4-24 shows the depth of Josiah's commitment and the lengths of his efforts for revival. (Nếu đọc 2 Các Vua 23:4-24, c/ta sẽ thấy vua Giôsia quyết tâm trong sự thánh sạch phần tâm linh hoàn toàn của dân Chúa để kinh nghiệm được sự phục hưng.)
# Along with destroying, burning all the articles in the idol temples, Josiah pulled down all the shrines, altars and the sites that had performed prostitution and human sacrifice. (Không chỉ đốt hết những tài vật trong các miễu mà thôi, Giôsia dẹp bỏ những nơi có sự ô uế về việc đàn ông làm điếm, hay chỗ ngày xưa dân sự đốt con cái mình trong lửa cho tà thần.)
# He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem for Baal, to the sun and moon. Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. (c. 19-20 - “Giô-si-a cũng dỡ hết thảy chùa miễu của các nơi cao ở tại trong thành Sa-ma-ri, mà các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên đã lập đặng chọc giận Đức Giê-hô-va, phá hủy các nhà đó như đã làm trong Bê-tên. 20 Người giết tại trên bàn thờ những thầy cả của các nơi cao, và thiêu hài cốt ở trên.”)
# When Josiah arrived at Bethel, he found the shrine of the golden calf cult built by Israel's wicked King Jeroboam. To render the site unfit for future idol worship, Josiah cleaned out the nearby cemetery the bones of the idol priests, and burned them on Jeroboam's altar. (c. 15 - “Lại, người phá bàn thờ tại Bê-tên, và nơi cao mà Giê-rô-bô-am, con trai Nê-bát, đã lập (con bò vàng cho dân sự thờ lạy), tức là người đó gây cho Y-sơ-ra-ên phạm tội; người phá bàn thờ ấy, thiêu đốt nơi cao, và cán nghiền thành ra tro bụi; cũng thiêu đốt tượng Át-tạt-tê.”)
# Furthermore, he got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the Lord. (c. 24 - Giô-si-a cũng trừ diệt những đồng cốt và thầy bói, những thê-ra-phim, và hình tượng, cùng hết thảy sự gớm ghiếc thấy trong xứ Giu-đa và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, đặng làm theo các lời luật pháp đã chép trong sách mà thầy tế lễ Hinh-kia đã tìm đặng trong đền thờ của Đức Giê-hô-va.)
> King Josiah was serious about soul cleaning – What’s about us? Are you hunger for holiness? (Bạn có đang đói khát sự thánh khiết vinh hiển của Chúa không?)
# Do we understand God’s holiness, when we sang the song “Holy, Holy, Holy” this morning? (C/ta có hiểu sự thánh khiết của Chúa, khi hội thánh hát bài “Thánh Thay…” sáng nay không?)
# Then go home, pull down, destroy, and burn up all the idols… that are standing between you and God. (Vậy thì hãy về nhà mình dẹp bỏ tất cả những vật c/ta dùng thờ lạy các tà thần mà đang sống ở giữa c/ta với Đức Chúa Trời.)
> It could a computer that is leading you to uncleaned websites, a video music that is leading you to immoral thoughts, a horoscope, a cable that is feeding you with aroused sexual movies, an adult video game that is slowly corrupting your mind, couple of bottle of heavy liquor that is destroying your characters, or even an Iphone that you are using to gossip someone…

Steps in Experiencing a Spiritual Revival
(2 Các Vua 22:1-2/23:25)
“22:1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left… 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.”
As a church, we talk a lot about revival, we desire a great awakening; it seems that every time the church gets together we pray for a revival; but the question always is - how can we truly experience a spiritual renewal? What are some of the practical steps we can do… to truly experience a soul revival? Learn from the life of a great king, named Josiah in 2 kings 22-23. King Josiah was Judah's last good king of the Israelites before their Southern kingdom was destroyed by Babylonian Empire in 587 BC. In 2 Kings 22:1 said that Josiah became king when he was only 8 years old. At age 15, Josiah “began to seek after the God of David;” At age 19, he undertook reforms to stop idol worship and get rid all the evils associated with it.
Background - What was the spiritual condition of God’s people of that time? Israelites were the chosen nation by God and had a covenant with Him. But Judah committed all kinds of gross sins. They worshiped idols, set up many pagan altars and shrines all over the land, involved in many pagan ceremonies. In 2 Kings 23:7-10 said that God’s people set up shrines that were in the temple of the Lord with male prostitutes, and even threw their son and daughter in the fire to the idol Molek. This was worse than the abortion sin in our time. The abomination begun at the top, from the kings, leaders and priests who led God’s people into these idol worships.
A great revival begun with king Josiah: he had a great concern for God’s temple. At age 25, Josiah decided to rebuild the temple of the LORD, which had been abandoned and neglected since the days of King Jotham, a century earlier. He hired builders and placed his secretary Shaphan and the high priest Hilkiah in charge of the work. Many people today including Christians have no concern of the spiritual matters; they are only focusing on the temporary things, and enjoying all kinds of worldly pleasures. First, to experience a revival – you must have a concern about your spiritual condition, your relationship between you and God. There must be a conviction in your heart wanting to change/to renew, because you recognize that your relationship between you and your God is broken, and drifted away. Don’t you know that the main cause of every problems in the family relationships, at works, in church among Christians, in the government is always related to the weakening of the vertical relationship with God? If this spiritual condition of us can be fixed, revived, then every horizontal relationship would be fine! Do you have any concern of your spiritual condition right now? How is your relationship between you and God presently? Is it drifting away? Are you aware of it or you just doing care?
When Josiah hired the workers to repair God’s temple, they found a book of the law. So they gave it to Hilkiah, who gave it to Shaphan, who brought it to King Josiah. The book was the Bible — the first five books of our Bible written by Moses. As the secretary Shaphan read the Bible to King Josiah, he tore his robe — that was a sign of grief and repentance in their culture. No doubt, Josiah knew that the LORD was angry with Judah, for they had long lived in sin, which was now revealed by the Bible they found. To desire for a revival, you must see your sins as God sees them in His words, and not based on your reasoning. After receiving the message, king Josiah assembled the population at Jerusalem and read the entire Bible aloud to them, a total of 187 chapters in our modern Bible. More than that, after finishing reading God’s words, king Josiah himself renewed the LORD's covenant, to obey all that was written in the Bible he had just read; He then invited the people to pledge themselves to the covenant. Do you see the importance of the revival must begin at the top leaders? Leaders - are you thirsty for a revival? You must return to the words of God and seek Him. Without the God’s words, we would not be convicted to make a turn around from sins, and to renew our covenant with God. The problem of today is the problem of dusty Bibles, but well-used Iphone and TV remote control?
Immediately, Josiah set upon a sweeping program to eliminate all pagan worships. A long list of things Josiah did recorded in 2 Kings 23:4-24 shows the depth of Josiah's commitment and the lengths of his efforts for revival. Along with destroying, burning all the articles in the idol temples, Josiah pulled down all the shrines, altars and the sites that had performed prostitution and human sacrifice. Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. When Josiah arrived at Bethel, he found the shrine of the golden calf cult built by Israel's wicked King Jeroboam. To render the site unfit for future idol worship, Josiah exhumed from the nearby cemetery the bones of the idol priests, and burned them on Jeroboam's altar. Furthermore, he got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the Lord. King Josiah was serious about soul cleaning – What’s about us? Are you hunger for holiness? Then go home, pull down, destroy, and burn up all the idols… that are standing between you and God.
