(Set an Example for Others to Follow)
(1 Corinthians 11:1)
“Hãy bắt chước tôi, cũng như chính mình tôi bắt chước Đấng Christ vậy.
(“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”)
I. Father’s Day
> People living in America have two important holidays each year to honor their parents.
> On the second Sunday of each month of May, our nation celebrates the Mother’s day.
> On the third Sunday of each month of June, people honor their fathers on the Father’s day.
> If we compare these two holidays, Mother’s day seems to be more excitement then the Father’s day.
# On Mother’s day, children from far away would come home and buy gifts for their moms.
# If they cannot come home, many children make long distance calls to say that they love their moms.
> But when it comes to Father’s day, everything seems to be simple, business as usual, only a simple meal that family gets together and eats.
II. The Power of Influence
> Although Father’s day appears to be less anticipated, the role of a father is NOT less important than a mother… in building a happy home and a decent society.
> There are two important powers that cannot be missed to build up an upright family: The power of love from the mother, and the power of influence from the father.
> The love and care of the mother defines the present condition of a home, and the influence of the father determines the future of a family.
> The state of a society depends on the moral condition of the homes; which depend on the godly influence of the fathers on their children.
# Today, our society is facing complicated issues due to the lack of godly influence of fathers in the homes: (Thống kê cho biết những nan đề ngày hôm nay đất nước Mỹ đang đối diện, và một trong những lý do là vì thiếu sự ảnh hưởng gương mẫu của những người cha trong gia đình:)
1) 63% of youths involve in suicidal problem come from families without fathers. (63% của những người trẻ tự tử là từ những gia đình không có cha ruột sống chung);
2) 70% of teen girls get pregnant in families without fathers living with them. (70% của các thiếu nữ dưới tuổi vị thành niên mang thai hoang… là từ những gia đình không có cha ở bên cạnh);
3) 71% of high school drop outs are from families without fathers. (71% của những đứa trẻ thiếu niên bỏ học Trung học là từ người gia đình không có người cha sống chung với);
4) 80% rapists come from families without fathers. (80% của những người vi phạm tội hiếp dâm là từ những gia đình không có người cha ở chung);
5) 85% of youths in the prison come from families without fathers.
> Not just how important of fathers in the homes, but a church is strong and stable today if there are enough “model men” - who set examples of Jesus’ characters for others to see and to copy.
> For that reason Paul challenged the church in Corinth when he said – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (Vì lý do quan trọng như vậy mà sứ đồ Phaolô đã thách thức Hội Thánh Côrinhtô và dám nói: “Hãy bắt chước tôi, cũng như chính mình tôi bắt chước Đấng Christ vậy.”)
III. Set Examples
> Since it is Father’s day – let’s ask: What are some of the life examples that godly men and young boys should exhibit so others can follow?
1) First, the words of a model man should be the words of integrity.
> What is the definition of “integrity?”
# Simple definition: “Integrity” is truly being who you say you are, and doing what you say you will do.
> A man with integrity means he will always “walk his talks” in all areas of life… from financial, money matters, business, school works, words, in serving a church to purity.
> His words and promises can always be trusted, and not just for “saying it.”
# If he says he will pick you up tomorrow; he will surely show up on time. (Nếu người hứa sẽ đón quí vị ngày mai, thì người đó sẽ có mặt đúng giờ y như lời mình đã hứa.)
# If you ask for his help, you do not have to worry that the work will fall into cracks one day, because he would do it, no matter if it is convenient for him or not. (Nếu quí vị nhờ họ thu xếp một việc gì thì quí vị sẽ luôn an tâm, vì biết người nam đó sẽ làm hết mình cho trọn công việc, dù cho có bất tiện cho họ đi nữa.)
# If he borrows your money and promises to pay back at a certain time; he will do it, and not pretend to forget about it. (Nếu họ mượn tiền quí vị và hứa trả lại theo một chu kỳ nào đó, thì họ sẽ trả đúng y như vậy, chứ không có gỉa bộ quên lờ đi.)
# Many years ago, there was a man came to visit our church for few Sundays. He claimed himself a Christian since in Vietnam; After one service, he shared his need to sponsor his daughter from Vietnam but short of about 300$. He asked to borrow and promised to pay me back within a month. After that Sunday, he disappeared and was never returned or found again.
> The man with integrity does not preach or teach in church about honesty, or “doing the right things,” and later park at the “handicap space” as his VIP parking without any conviction of wrong doing.
# He would always stop at the Stop sign even when no one is there.
> An integrity man is not easily bribed by the praises and approvals of others; but keeping his promises with God is his priorities.
> He is not easily compromised to please the crowd or to gain some personal profits.
> Of course the model man is not perfect; but if he makes a mistake; he would not find excuses to cover up his faults or blame someone else, rather he accepts his weakness and tries to find ways to re-do it again better.
# He does not behave like his ancestor “Adam” blaming God about “the woman You gave me!,” or others, but take full responsibility.
> Model men with integrity will try all of his effort to be perfect in his words, because the apostle James said in James 3:2 – “We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.”
> In the Old Testament, the leader Joshua was a model man of integrity.
# In Joshua 6, Joshua kept his promise to save Rahab, a gentile woman and prostitute under the oath because she hid the two spies.
# In Joshua 9, the Israelites got tricked by the Gibeonites. They used worn-out sacks, old wineskins, patched sandals and moldy bread, to trick the Isralites entering a peace treaty. Joshua found out later, but he decided to not kill them, but still kept his promise to protect this people because he already made a treaty with them in the name of God.
> We must live with integrity because we are God’s children, a chosen people, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation. (C/ta phải sống thanh liêm trong lời mình nói và hứa, vì c/ta mang danh là con cái của Đức Chúa Trời, Đấng lớn nhất.)
2) Secondly, the life of a model man shows through the example of serving others.
> The model men lead by life examples and not just use beautiful words. (Họ làm gương qua cách sống thực tế phục vụ người khác mỗi ngày chứ không chỉ những “lời hay ý đẹp.”)
> His life illustrates by the acts of service, caring for others, feeding the sheep, and not being selfish – not the attitude of “what do I get?”
> The church today lacks a lot of model men who are willing to serve others.
# Many men today are too busy to serve; and if they come to church, they just care for themselves and go home with no conviction of giving a simple act of service as to help cleaning up or putting up tables and chairs.
> The model men never have a thought that “let the pastors and leaders take care those things - that’s what their servant roles are?”
> Jesus led by examples, and not just by words only. (Chúa Giê-xu của c/ta làm gương qua việc làm, chứ không chỉ lời nói mà thôi.)
# When I think of Jesus’ life example, I do not hesitate to think of John 13:4-5.
> This was the occasion during the last supper before His cruxifiction – what did Jesus do? “so Jesus got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”
> Jesus was their Master, but He bent down as a servant to wash the feet of all his 12 disciples.
# “getting up” is already difficult, even more difficult to bend down and pick up a little kid – but that what a model man always does.
# Please do not brag about how well you can teach a lesson or preach a sermon, but be content how well you can bend down and serve others.
# It’s not how much you can bench press, but to bend down and put up a chair, a table, or serve a child?
# It’s not how many expensive toys you get, but how do you use your resources to serve others?
> The greatest act of service Jesus did was on the cross.
> He is a super model man because he was willing to be suffered to carry all our sins.
# 1 Peter 2:21 – “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
> The lifestyle of a model man makes God’s love (agape) so clear, no longer an abstract word, but for others to see and copy.
# Ephesians 5:1 – “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
> The model man follows the model of the “good Samaritan” who is ready to help solving all kinds of the problems, meeting all needs.
# If there is an issue, he would be quickly volunteer to help by saying “let’s me handle that, pastor; you do not need to sweep the floor. Go back to your office and work on the sermon that God puts in your heart.”
> The model man has big visions for missions, a great heart for serving, and good at encouraging others to involve with him in accomplishing the dreams.
> He is not idle to put his burdens on others when he can take care his own responsibilities.
# 2 Thessalonica 3:7-9 – Learn from the examples of the apostles – “For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.”
> The life of a model man is the greatest Bible version for others to read, the most effective sermon without words.
# Serving others is his lifestyle, his calling, and his motivation.
# His natural way of life is to serve his family, the lost and broken heart, and the least.
# Becoming a mentor for new Christians, a starter of a new mission for children, a great caring resource for the elders, and not just sit in a comfortable pew each Sunday and being satisfied.
3) Thirdly, the model man has a clear life purpose.
> You cannot lead without having a clear purpose where you want to go?
> Having a purpose is important so the model man can focus on his life priorities.
# Today, satan is the master of distractions to deceive so many people not to chase after the things of God; As a result, many of us end up in wasting a lot of time for things that are temporary.
> Jesus’ goal while living on earth was not to prolong life, but to fulfill God’s purpose for himself.
# Jesus when He came into this world – His goal for life was not to be the king, or to live long (He died young only at 33 years old), but to fulfill His father’s will and to please God.
# Matthew 17:5 what did the Father said to His Son – “While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
> What is your purpose as a Christian man and young boys – do you know it?
> Is your life just chasing after the worldly values that will pass away one day?
> Does your purpose have anything to do with God and His eternal values?
> What legacy of life examples you plan to leave behind after you take your last breath on this world? (Nếu ngày hôm nay bạn qua đời thì “gia tài di sản” của bạn sẽ để lại cho những người còn ở lại là gì?)
> Is it a powerful influence of a godly life?
> In Vacation Bible School this year, at the end of the last lesson, I summarize all 5 lessons with the following purpose that we as Christians must pursue and set examples for others to follow.
> Our purpose of all Christians, especially men and young boys are to love God, serve others, and share the good news to all.
# Matthew 22:37-39 remind us these purposes – “… Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”
# Matthew 28:19-20 reminds us the purpose Jesus gave to His church – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
> All life purposes on this earth will one day pass and end; but we should pursue the purpose that has eternal values.
> Men and young boys - Can you say liked what Paul said – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ?”
> You may think – “Well! that is for Paul, the hero of faith, and not me?”
> What about the thing you have claimed in Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
> May God bless all our Christian men and young boys to be role models in loving God, serving others and sharing the light to the world.
------------------- Invitation
> The most precious source for church growth is in the men and young boys; unfortunately, it appears we get the least out of them.
> Just think if all Christian men and young boys would wake up, living a life of integrity, setting godly examples of serving others, and a clear purpose of God – how would this church be transformed? (Cứ thử nghĩ đi nếu tất cả những người nam cơ đốc hay thanh niên nam trẻ tuổi thức dậy, sống một cuộc đời thanh liêm chu toàn bổn phận, làm gương sáng qua sự hầu hạ những kẻ yếu đuối, và có mục đích sống rõ ràng cho Chúa thì Hội Thánh ở đây sẽ kinh nghiệm sự biến hóa, đổi mới lớn như thế nào?)
> It is a challenge to all men to start living and saying – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
> It’s not easy, but we can do it through Jesus Who gives us strength; the only thing needed is if you want it and trust Him.
> In the occasion of Father’s day - Just make a commitment this morning to trust in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to fulfill your call as Christian fathers, men of God’s church, and young men for His kingdom on earth.
Set a Godly Life Example for Others to Follow
(1 Corinthians 11:1)
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
· People living in America have two important holidays each year to honor their parents.
· On the second Sunday of each month of May, our nation celebrates the Mother’s Day.
· On the third Sunday of each month of June, people honor their fathers on the Father’s Day.
· Although Father’s Day appears to be less anticipated, the role of a father is NOT less important than a mother.
· There are two important powers to build up an upright family: The power of love from the mother, and the power of influence from the father.
· The love and care of the mother defines the present condition of a home, and the influence of the father determines the future of a family.
· Not just how important of fathers in the homes, but a church is strong and stable today if there are enough “model men” who set examples of Jesus’ characters for others to see and copy.

· The model man follows the model of the “good Samaritan” who is ready to help solving all kinds of the problems, and meeting all needs.
· The model man has big visions for missions, a great heart for serving, and good at encouraging others to involve with him in accomplishing the dreams.
· He is not idle to put his burdens on others when he can take care his own responsibilities.
· The life of a model man is the greatest Bible version for others to read, the most effective sermon without words.
· Serving others is his lifestyle, his calling, and his motivation.
· His natural way of life is to become a mentor for new Christians, a starter of a new mission for children, a great caring resource for the elders, and not just sit in a comfortable pew each Sunday and being satisfied.
· Thirdly, the model man has a clear life purpose.
· You cannot lead without having a clear purpose where you want to go?
· Having a purpose is important so the model man can focus on his life priorities.
· Today, satan is the master of distractions to deceive so many people not to chase after the things of God; As a result, many of us end up in wasting a lot of time for things that are temporary.
· Jesus’ goal while living on earth was not to prolong life, but to fulfill God’s purpose for himself.
· Jesus when He came into this world – His goal for life was not to be the king, but to please God.
· What is your purpose as a Christian man and young boy – do you know it?
· Is your life just chasing after the worldly values that will pass away one day?
· Does your purpose have anything to do with God and His eternal values?
· What legacy of life examples you plan to leave behind after you take your last breath on this world?
· Our purpose of all Christians, especially men should be to love God, serve others, and share the good news to all.
· Men and young boys - Can you say liked what Paul said – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ?”
· You may think – “Well! that is for Paul, the hero of faith, and not me?”
· What about the thing you have claimed in Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
· It’s not easy, but we can do it through Jesus Who gives us strength; the only thing needed is if you want it and trust Him.
· In the occasion of Father’s Day, just make a commitment this morning to trust in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to fulfill your call as Christian fathers, men of God’s church, and young men for His kingdom on earth.
· May God bless all our Christian men and young boys to be role models in loving God, serving others and sharing the light to the world. Amen!
