Chúa Jêsus Khóc
(Jesus Wept)
Lu-ca 19:41-46
"Khi Đức Chúa Jêsus gần đến thành, thấy thì khóc về thành, và phán rằng: 42 Ước gì, ít nữa là ngày nay, mầy đã hiểu biết sự làm cho mầy được bình an! Song hiện nay những sự ấy kín giấu nơi mắt mầy. 43 Vì sẽ có ngày xảy đến cho mầy, khi quân nghịch đào hố xung quanh mầy, vây mầy chặt bốn bề. 44 Họ sẽ hủy hết thảy, mầy và con cái ở giữa mầy nữa. Không để cho mầy hòn đá nầy trên hòn đá kia, vì mầy không biết lúc mình đã được thăm viếng."
(When the city came into view, he wept over it. “If you had only recognized this day, and everything that was good for you! But now it’s too late. In the days ahead your enemies are going to bring up their heavy artillery and surround you, pressing in from every side. They’ll smash you and your babies on the pavement. Not one stone will be left intact. All this because you didn’t recognize and welcome God’s personal visit.”) (MSG)
I. Our Natural Human Emotion
> God creates human to have a total of 5 senses: Touch, see, hear, taste, and smell. (Đức Chúa Trời dựng loài người nên có tất cả 5 cảm giác: Sờ, thấy, nghe, nếm và ngửi.)
> By these senses we can feel happy, sad, angry, or worried… all different kinds of emotions or moods. (Với những cảm giác tự nhiên này con người có thể cảm nhận được vui, buồn, giận, lo lắng…)
> One of the ways we express our mood of being sad is crying or weeping. (Một trong những cách c/ta có thể diễn tả tâm trạng khổ sở bên trong lòng của mình đó là qua sự khóc lóc.)
> In fact, human life begins with tears, and end with sadness. (Điều tự nhiên là sự sống loài người bắt đầu bằng nước mắt, và thường kết thúc bằng sự buồn đau.)
# We all must cry when we were born to begin breathing to live, and our life always ends with sadness in tears to say goodbye to our loved ones. (C/ta phải khóc khi mới lọt lòng mẹ để biết thở mà sống, và rồi cuối đời của c/ta cũng là nước mắt chào vĩnh biệt những người còn ở lại.)
> We also weep for many other reasons: (Có nhiều những lý do khác làm c/ta khóc:)
a) When we deal with regret and shame, such as in the case of Peter who denied his Master three times recorded in Matthew 26:75 – “Then he (Peter) began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.” (Khi đối diện với sự nuối tiếc và hổ thẹn, như trường hợp của sứ đồ Phiêrơ chối Chúa mình đến 3 lần có chép trong Mathiơ 26:75 - “Phi-e-rơ nhớ lại lời Đức Chúa Jêsus đã phán rằng: Trước khi gà gáy, ngươi sẽ chối ta ba lần. Đoạn, người đi ra và khóc lóc cách đắng cay.” Phiêrơ khóc trong sự ăn năn sám hối.)
b) In John 20:11 – Mary wept for what reason? “Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb,” because she did not see the body of her Master and thought that someone had stolen it. (Trong Giăng 20:11 – có chép tại sao Mari khóc? “Song Ma-ri đứng bên ngoài, gần mộ, mà khóc. Người vừa khóc, vừa cúi xuống dòm trong mộ.” Vì thương tiếc xác của Chúa nay không còn ở đó nữa.)
> Tears express the nature of our humanity. (Những “giọt lệ” bày tỏ bản tánh tự nhiên của loài người c/ta.)
II. Jesus Wept Liked Us
> The scriptures we read this morning said Jesus also wept when He saw the city of Jerusalem. Why? (Lời Kinh Thánh c/ta đọc sáng nay có chép Chúa Giê-xu khi nhìn thấy thành Giêrusalem thì khóc. Tại sao?)
> This was the time when Jesus was triumphant entrance into Jerusalem the last time, riding on a colt (a young donkey) before he was crucified on the cross. (Đây là lần cuối Chúa Giê-xu vào thành Giêrusalem, cưỡi một lừa con, trước khi Ngài bị đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.)
> It happened on Sunday - a special Sunday, also called “Palm Sunday.” (Lúc đó là vào ngày Chúa Nhật, một Chúa Nhật đặc biệt, được gọi là Chúa Nhật Lễ Lá.)
> This Sunday was also the first day of 8-day Passover Festival Passover, when the Jews remembered God’s deliverance of their ancestors from Egyptian slavery. (Ngày lễ Lá này cũng là bắt đầu của lễ Vượt Qua của người Do Thái kéo dài trong vòng 8 ngày, kỷ niệm Đức Chúa Trời đã một lần giải cứu tổ phụ của họ khỏi ách nô lệ của người Ai cập)
> When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people greeted him with cheers and waved palm branches, welcoming Him into Jerusalem as a con-quering hero, as a King. (Chúa Nhật hôm nay được gọi là lễ Lá vì khi Chúa vào thành, dân chúng lấy những nhành lá cây vẫy và tung hô Ngài như một vị anh hùng, như một vị Vua.)
> But why did Jesus weep? (Nhưng tại sao Chúa lại khóc?)
> First, Jesus wept because He although is God was truly a human liked one of us. (Chúa Giê-xu khóc vì chính Ngài tuy là Đức Chúa Trời, nhưng cũng mang thân xác của loài người như mỗi người c/ta.)
> In Philippians 2:7 verifies the humanity fact about Jesus – “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Chúa khóc vì Ngài thật mang bản tánh của loài người như c/ta, vì có chép trong Philíp 2:7 – “chính Ngài (Chúa Giê-xu) đã tự bỏ mình đi, lấy hình tôi tớ và trở nên giống như loài người.”)
> Jesus as a human can feel our pains of hunger, thirst, hurt, and sadness. (Chúa như một con người, Ngài cảm nhận được nỗi khổ sở khó khăn của loài người là sự đói, khát, đau đớn và buồn tủi.)
> In another occasion recorded in John 11:35, the shortest verse in the Bible said that “Jesus wept” when He went to the tomb of Lazarus. (Sự kiện đầu tiên Chúa khóc được chép trong Kinh Thánh khi Ngài đứng trước mộ của Laxarơ trong Giăng 11:35 – “Đức Chúa Jêsus khóc.”)
> This is the shortest verse in the Bible, but one of the most powerful, to show that Jesus was a real human as He cried; He was not just a Spirit. (Câu Kinh Thánh này là câu ngắn nhất, nhưng là chứng cớ rõ nhất về bản tánh Chúa Giê-xu hoàn toàn “nhập thể thành người” khi Ngài khóc, chứ không chỉ là một Thần Linh ảo ảnh.)
> Jesus had all 5 human senses and can feel all emotions as anyone of us. (Chúa có đủ tất cả 5 cảm giác như mỗi người c/ta và có thể cảm nhận được mọi sự xúc động.)
> It is a deep mystery that God the Creator could be “shrinked” into a human, that no other gods could ever do. (Đây là sự huyền bí sâu sa khi Đấng Tạo Hóa Chí Cao bằng lòng bị thu nhỏ vào trong thân phận của con người, mà không có một chúa nào có thể làm giống như vậy.)
> Is there any religion in this world teaching this truth? (Có một tôn giáo nào dạy như vậy không, đó là Đấng Tạo Hóa “đến gần” và trở nên như mỗi người c/ta?)
# Knowing Jesus wept, it helps me to understand more about one of His name, that is “Emmanuel,” meaning “God is truly with us, by becoming one of us.” (Biết Chúa khóc, lời Chúa giúp tôi hiểu thêm về một danh xưng của Ngài có, đó là danh “Êmmanuên,” nghĩa là Đức Chúa Trời thật ở cùng c/ta.)
> So when you and I are going through the troubles and hardship in life, we can know that Jesus understands, because He had once been through all the pains as a human and He wept. (Cho nên mỗi khi c/ta trải qua sự khổ sở buồn đau trong cuộc sống này, c/ta nhận biết Chúa thông cảm mọi nỗi khổ của c/ta, vì chính Ngài đã từng trải qua những sự đau buồn đó và đã khóc.)
III. Jesus Wept for Lost Souls
> When Jesus saw the city of Jerusalem He wept over it, not for the buildings and things, but for the people were living in it. Why? (Đây là lần cuối cùng Chúa Giê-xu nhìn thấy thành Giêrusalem, dân chúng, đám đông trước những ngày thống khổ; nhưng lý do tại sao Chúa khóc khi nhìn đám đông người ở thành này?)
# Parents - Have you wept over a stubborn child because he or she disobeyed you, left home and his/her life is about to be destroyed by drugs, sexual sins, HIV diseases, sickness and in jail? (Có bao giờ quí vị khóc vì thấy “đứa con hoàng đàng” của mình sắp sửa “nếm” những tai họa, đau khổ trước mắt, vì sự bướng bỉnh của nó không chịu nghe theo lời của mình không?)
# In the parable of the prodigal son in the Luke Gospel, even though the Bible didn’t say it, but I am sure that the father often wept over his prodigal son while waiting for him to come back home. (Ẩn dụ người con trai hoang đàng trong sách Luca tuy rằng kinh thánh không có nói, nhưng tôi tin rằng người cha khóc lóc từng ngày, chờ đợi đứa con quay trở về.)
1) What was the stubbornness of God’s people that Jesus wept over? (Sự bướng bỉnh gì của đám đông người mà làm Chúa khóc?)
> Jesus wept because His people did not understand His mission. (Chúa Giê-xu khóc vì dân chúng lúc đó không hiểu mục đích tại sao Ngài đã đến.)
> They denied the Savior, the Messiah that God sent; They rejected the gift that God gave them unconditionally. (Vì họ đã khước từ chính Đấng Cứu Thế, Đấng được Đức Chúa Trời sai đến để cứu chuộc họ; Họ chẳng thèm nhận món quà quí gía Chúa ban cho không điều kiện.)
> He wept over the lostness of the people in Jerusalem because they would reject Him as their Savior just as John declared in John 1:11 - "He (Jesus) came unto His own, but His own received Him not." (Chúa khóc vì dân của chính Mình sẽ chối Ngài là Đấng Cứu Chuộc của họ.)
> Jesus knew that by Friday morning – 6 days later, the same crowd praising Him as a King would be shouting a different message - “Crucify Him!” (Chúa biết 6 ngày tới đây, cùng một đám đông đang tung hô Chúa là Vua, sẽ hô lên lớn tiếng “đóng đinh hắn!”)
> Jesus cried because He saw the faces in the crowd cheering, shouting, but they did not understand the message of true peace; It was hidden from them. (Chúa khóc vì thấy những gương mặt đang hớn hở tung hô Ngài, nhưng không biết sự hòa bình thật, vì đã bị giấu khỏi mắt họ.)
2) Jesus wept because of their rejection of the Messiah would bring a terrible consequence to their people because they would choose wars rather than peace. (Chúa Giê-xu khóc vì thấy trước hậu quả kinh khủng sắp xảy đến cho họ vì họ sẽ chọn chiến tranh thay vì hòa bình.)
> By waving palm branches they were showing that they expected Jesus to be another warlord, a military general who would lead them to overthrow the Romans. (Khi họ vẫy lá cây là việc họ muốn tôn Ngài làm một vị tướng, lãnh đạo họ lật đổ chế độ Lamã.)
> We need to understand that the Jews were under the Roman oppression at that time. There were heavy taxes, restrictions, numerous executions by means of crucifixion. (C/ta phải hiểu lúc đó người Do Thái đang bị dân Lamã đô hộ, bắt đóng thuế nặng cùng những cuộc xử hình dã man.)
> So, in a natural sense, the Jews were in search of someone, a king, a conqueror, someone to set them free. (Điều tự nhiên là dân Do Thái đang chờ một vị anh hùng đến để giải cứu họ)
> They had seen the mighty works of this man Jesus. They witnessed of Him restoring sight to the blind. They saw the evidence of Him healing the lame. They saw Him feed the multitude with a little boy’s lunch, and had leftovers to spare. They heard about Him raising Lazarus from the dead. They listened to Him teach with authority. (Họ đã từng thấy những việc lạ lùng Chúa Giê-xu đã làm: người mù được thấy, què được đi, cả đám đông được Người cho ăn no bụng, Laxarơ sống lại, cùng được nghe những lời dạy dỗ đầy quyền năng.)
> The timing was right, approaching the Passover feast. And just maybe now, Jesus would somehow lead them from the oppression and cruel treatment they received from the Roman government. (Thời điểm này cũng đúng lúc lắm, là lễ Vượt Qua khi có nhiều người nhóm lại, là cơ hội tốt để ông Giê-xu này sẽ giải cứu được họ chăng?)
> The people desired deliverance from the Romans’ oppression; But they did not understand Jesus came to deliver them from the bigger problem of sin’s oppression. (Dân chúng muốn sự giải cứu khỏi ách của người Lamã, nhưng họ không hiểu Chúa đến để giải cứu họ khỏi ách của tội lỗi.)
> They had eyes, but they didn’t see; They had ears, but they didn’t hear. They missed the whole point of the message that God had given to them through Jesus Christ, His Son. (Họ có mắt mà không thấy, có tai mà không chịu nghe. Họ hiểu lầm chương trình giải cứu của Đức Chúa Trời qua con Ngài.)
3) Jesus cried because He saw their terrible destiny that was coming - “For the days shall come upon thee; that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” (Chúa khóc vì Ngài thấy trước định mệnh kinh khủng của họ đang sắp đến - Vì sẽ có ngày xảy đến cho mầy, khi quân nghịch đào hố xung quanh mầy, vây mầy chặt bốn bề. Họ sẽ hủy hết thảy, mầy và con cái ở giữa mầy nữa. Không để cho mầy hòn đá nầy trên hòn đá kia, vì mầy không biết lúc mình đã được thăm viếng.”)
> Here is a group of people desiring relief and salvation from oppression, and failing to see their opportunity for true relief with God in Christ, His Son. (Đây là nhóm người tìm kiếm sự giải cứu khỏi ách nô lệ, nhưng lại không thấy sự giải cứu khỏi sự phán xét của tội lỗi trong Con Đức Chúa Trời.)
> If they accepted Jesus as the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, and with all effort had lived in peace with others, not rebellious to the Romans’ gorverment, then they would not reap the consequence happened about 40 years later in 70AD. (Nếu họ nhận Ngài là Đấng Cứu Chuộc, Chúa của sự bình an, và làm theo lời Ngài dạy, sống hòa thuận với mọi người, thay vì nổi loạn chống nghịch lại chính quyền Lamã, thì họ sẽ tránh khỏi hậu quả đau thương xảy ra vào năm 70 sau Công Nguyên.)
> What happened in 70AD? (Chuyện gì đã xảy ra vào năm 70 Công Nguyên?)
> As Jesus sat upon the colt, He saw ahead the Temple of God beyond the years when an army surrounding the Holy City and the temple stones being taken down & the whole city leveled. (Chúa Giê-xu cưỡi lừa con, nhìn thành Giêrusalem và thấy trước đền thờ sau nhiều năm tới sẽ bị phá hủy, không còn một hòn đá ở trên một hòn đá nào.)
# According to the historian, Josephus, showed that in 70 A.D., a Roman general named Titus, set siege against Jerusalem because they did finally revolt and over one million Jews were killed. (Theo lịch sử cho biết, vào khoảng 70AD, tướng Lamã Titus đã bao vây thành vì dân Do Thái nổi loạn, và có trên một triệu người Do Thái bị giết chết.)
# “911” was only about 3,000 people died, this battle was more than 360 times; where could they have enough places to burry all the dead bodies? (Vụ “911” chỉ có khoãng 3,000 người chết, còn trận chiến này đến gấp 360 lần, thì có chỗ nào đủ để chôn xác những người chết?)
# Jesus saw ahead the bodies in the streets and blood running in the gutters, and hundreds of thousands of people crying because they were starving to death, while Titus waited for Jerusalem to surrender. (Chúa Giê-xu thấy trước sự kiện này mà khóc vì sẽ có cả triệu người chết đói, khi tướng Titus vây quanh thành chờ đợi họ đầu hàng.)
> Even the children got smashed into the rock, meaning trampled over the army of Romans. (Kể cả những đứa trẻ bị quăng vào đá, nghĩa là bị quân đội Lamã trà đạp lên mà giết chết.)
> The people did it their way. They acted upon their terms, and it brought about judgment on themselves. (Dân do thái tự chọn làm theo ý riêng của mình, theo phương cách của mình, thay vì con đường yêu thương, để rồi lãnh hậu quả đau thương.)
> Jesus wept because He saw ahead the terrible consequence of their rejection of the Messiah and about to make wars to the Romans. (Chúa khóc vì thấy dân chọn của mình sắp gặp phải hậu quả đau thương, vì họ đã từ chối Đấng Cứu Chuộc và sửa soạn nổi loạn cùng người Lamã.)
> More than that, Jesus wept because of a city with so many lost souls on the way to the eternal lake of fire, because they rejected the Savior God sent. (Hơn thế nữa, Chúa khóc cho những linh hồn hư mất trong thành sẽ bị phán xét vì đã từ chối Đấng Cứu Thế mà Đức Chúa Trời đã sai đến.)
IV. Jesus Still Weeps
> Is Jesus still weeping? (Chúa Giê-xu có vẫn còn khóc không?)
1) Jesus is at the right hand of the Father praying and weeping for the lost souls. (Chúa ở bên hữu Đức Chúa Cha vẫn khóc khi thấy nhiều linh hồn vẫn còn bướng bỉnh chưa chịu tiếp nhận món quà cứu rỗi Ngài ban cho?)
> He looks across the world and weeps for many nations such as Syria, North Korea, China, Việt-nam… are in turmoil. (Chúa nhìn trên quả địa cầu ngày nay và thấy nhiều nước, nhiều quốc gia đang ở trong tình trạng suy đồi đạo đức mà khóc?)
> He looks across America and weeps for San Francisco, New York City, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Baton Rouge. (Ngài nhìn thấy nhiều thành phố từ San Francisco đến Baton Rouge mà có sẽ khóc không?)
# Jesus looks and sees that the political leaders throughout the nations are interested more in their own agendas, than moral standards that our fathers had established and died for. (Ngài thấy những nhà chính trị gia chỉ tranh chấp cho quyền lực riêng của mình, thay vì bảo vệ những tiêu chuẩn đạo đức mà tổ tiên họ đã thiết lập và tranh đấu.)
> Jesus looks out over our cities today and sees crimes (tội ác), He sees problesm of drugs, alcohol, gambling addictions (nan đề nghiện ngập của rượu, thuốc phiện, cờ bạc), abortion and sexual abuse (nan đề phá thai và tình dục xấu xa), atheist and homosexual agenda promotions freely (Triết lý vô thần và Đồng tính luyến ái được cổ động và bảo vệ).
> He looks out and sees the graves of teenagers who died prematurely at the hands of their own classmates, gunned down at school. He sees lives that are torn apart, kids without fathers and mothers (gia đình đổ vỡ), hearts that are empty, He sees suicide (tự sát), rape (hãm hiếp), murder (giết người), divorce (li dị), racism (kỳ thị chủng tộc), porns freely promoted on Internet (hình ảnh ô dâm được tự do phổ biến trên mạng lưới Internet).
2) Jesus weeps because He sees that many Christians gather in His churches on nearly every street corner, to wave palm branches and sing "Hosanna!" but in many ways they have turned their backs on God. (Chúa khóc vì thấy nhiều người vẫn đi nhà thờ, nhưng thật sự đang quay lưng từ chối Chúa.)
> Is Jesus still weeping for His church to take no urgency in sharing the message of peace? (Chúa Giê-xu có đang khóc không khi thấy Hội Thánh còn thờ ơ, chưa bỏ hết sức rao giảng Tin Lành cho thế giới hư mất?)
> Would Jesus weep when He sees the church worries so much about the things of this world and careless about the works of God. (Chúa có sẽ khóc không khi thấy Hội Thánh của Ngài chỉ chăm lo những điều thuộc thế gian hơn là những công việc của Ngài sao?)
> He looks into His churches who are in sleepy modes, have no passion for the things of God; and if it is, only a short time. (Tình trạng H/T của Ngài đang say ngủ. Chẳng có sự nóng cháy nào trong công việc của Chúa; mà nếu có đi thì chỉ thoáng qua thôi.)
# They act just liked the disciples in the garden at Gethesemane on the night Jesus was betrayed – sleeping and not knowing the trouble day was coming quickly. (Hội Thánh Chúa giống như các môn đồ ngày xưa tại vườn Ghếtsêmanê trong đêm Chúa bị bắt thì lại ngủ say, chìm đắm trong những giấc mơ đời, không nhận biết ngày Chúa trở lại rất gần rồi, mà lại thờ ơ trong công việc Chúa sao?)
> They are more concern of making money, about income taxes, worried about job security, worried about the color of their Iphone, worried about their health, then the great commission (chỉ cặm cụi lo việc hái tiền, thuế má, màu của cái máy Iphone của mình phải là gì, nhưng lãng quên đại mạng lệnh)?
> He sees people who are so busy doing things here and there that they never bother to consider those things that are eternally important, the lost souls around them? (Chúa thấy con cái Ngài bận rộn trong nhiều việc ở đời này, nhưng bịt tai chẳng thèm muốn nghe đến những điều có gía trị trường tồn, chẳng lo cho những linh hồn đang trên con đường dẫn đến sự chết đời đời?)
> Their heart is dry, their pillows are not wet with tears for the lostness of their neighbors, relatives, friends, and co-workers. (Lòng họ đang khô khan, gối họ không có nước mắt cho những linh hồn đang hư mất, cho những người xung quanh.)
> Jesus sees the churches going through the motions of service (theo thói quen), and praise Him for what they want Him to do, instead of praising Him for who He is. They are busy with activities (sinh hoạt) and all kinds of programs, meetings, fellowship and less concern about discipleship and evangelism? (Chúa thấy Hội Thánh chỉ nhóm lại theo thói quen, lúc nào cũng chỉ cầu nguyện xin Chúa chúc phước hơn là muốn tìm hiểu ý của Ngài để vâng theo, bận rộn trong những sinh hoạt nhưng không chú trọng đến sự truyền giáo và môn đồ hóa?)
> He sees the church is callous of the conviction of sins. (Chúa thấy con cái Ngài chai lì trong sự cáo trách tâm linh từ tuần này đến tuần nọ, chắng có sự thay đổi của tấm lòng chi hết.)
# They talk a lot, discuss a lot, but walk very little. (Họ nói thì nhiều, nhưng hành động thì ít.)
> He sees that the church people talk a lot about love, but prefer to get even rather than to forgive. (Chúa nghe thấy họ nói nhiều trên môi miệng mình tình yêu thương, nhưng lại thích “trả đũa” hơn là chọn tha thứ nhau.)
# Does Jesus look into His churches today and sees no excitement, no dedication, no joy, no caring, no expectation. Everyone is doing their own ways, care for their own things. (Khi Chúa nhìn vào Hội Thánh của Ngài thì có còn thấy sự hăng say, sốt sắng, vui mừng, yêu thương thật và trông đợi không, hay là ai nấy đang làm theo ý riêng của mình?)
# In essence, our attitude may be, “God, I want peace and blessings, and I’m going to do it my way, because that’s how I want to handle it (theo ý và đường lối của con). And Lord, your job is just to bless me, bless my actions.” (C/ta có phải đang sống với thái độ “Chúa ơi con muốn Ngài chúc phước cho đời sống con, con muốn sự bình an, nhưng con sẽ làm theo ý và đường lối riêng của mình. Chúa chỉ chúc phước những việc con làm mà thôi.”)
> Maybe I exaggerate, but the question is - If Jesus enters VHBC today and looks into our faces and our heart, would He weep? (Có thể tôi vẽ một bức tranh hơi quá đáng, nhưng khi Chúa Giê-xu nhìn thấu vào tấm lòng của VHBC ngày hôm nay thì Ngài sẽ thấy gì?)
> Maybe He would weep because He sees our desires have been so self-centered, instead of God-centered. (Có lẽ Chúa sẽ khóc chăng khi thấy c/ta ai nấy đang đi theo đường lối riêng của mình chăng?)

# We have sins in our life, especially the stubbornness and hidden secret sins, that are blocking our mobility/relationship with God. These sins cut us off from the presence and power of His Spirit. > I am not talking about the physical health, but your spiritual heath check-up?
> You may say “Oh! I am fine. I don’t see a need to do this.”
> Let me ask a simple question: “Is Jesus really Lord of your life?”
# How many things in your life that Jesus really is the Lord?
# How many of your decisions are really from your self-center than God’s center?
# How many things you are doing, thinking, saying that go according to Jesus’ teachings?
# What kind of attitude you have after listening to a sermon and studying a Bible lesson – anything changes? Any conviction from the Holy Spirit?
> I believe many times we come to church and go home grieving God, because we don’t care for what we have heard, and we are so callous with the conviction that the Holy Spirit puts in our heart?
# Is anyone in your heart now that you are still not forgiving?
# Is anyone in your life now that you would not stop gossiping him or her?
# Do you care about the lost souls around you? What was the last time you wept for them?
# Do you care if VHBC is growing in love and caring for one another?
> If you keep pushing sins off, covering it, dragging it, shutting it… then one day your heart is so hard to a point that there is no more opportunity for repentance and you know what is coming? Judgment because God cannot be mocked (xem rẻ đâu).
# You keeps on living in sins then watch out for the judgment is coming because God loves you and He doesn’t want you to be that way.
> Learn from the people living in the city of Jerusalem.
> It’s time to repent, it’s time to weep, and it’s time to return to the Lord!
> Let us weep as Jesus did for our city, our nation, for Vietnam country, our families, our relatives, and friends, and VHBC.
> And may the Holy Spirit put in our heart a conviction for the lost souls, and may the Holy Spirit put us down on our knees and weeping, and may the Holy Spirit lift us up to go out and share the message of hope for the eternal life, as we prepare to celebrate Easter next week.
Jesus Wept
Luke 19:41-46
“When the city came into view, he wept over it. “If you had only recognized this day, and everything that was good for you! But now it’s too late. In the days ahead your enemies are going to bring up their heavy artillery and surround you, pressing in from every side. They’ll smash you and your babies on the pavement. Not one stone will be left intact. All this because you didn’t recognize and welcome God’s personal visit.”
God creates human to have a total of 5 senses: Touch, see, hear, taste, and smell. By these senses we can feel happy, sad, angry, or worried… all different kinds of emotions or moods. One of the ways we express our mood of being sad is crying or weeping. In fact, human life begins with tears, and end with sadness. We all must cry when we were born to begin breathing to live, and our life always ends with sadness in tears to say goodbye to our loved ones. Tears express the nature of our humanity. The scriptures we read this morning said Jesus also wept when He saw the city of Jerusalem. Why? This was the time when Jesus was triumphant entrance into Jerusalem the last time, riding on a colt (a young donkey) before he was crucified on the cross. It happened on Sunday - a special Sunday, also called “Palm Sunday.” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people greeted him with cheers and waved palm branches, welcoming Him into Jerusalem as a con-quering hero, as a King. But why did Jesus weep?
First, Jesus wept because He although is God was truly a human liked one of us. In Philippians 2:7 verifies the humanity fact about Jesus – “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Jesus as a human can feel our pains of hunger, thirst, hurt, and sadness. Jesus had all 5 human senses and can feel all emotions as anyone of us. So, when you and I are going through the troubles and hardship in life, we can know that Jesus understands, because He had once been through all the pains as a human and He wept.
When Jesus saw the city of Jerusalem He wept over it, not for the buildings and things, but for the people were living in it. Why? Parents - Have you wept over a stubborn child because he or she disobeyed you, left home and his/her life is about to be destroyed by drugs, sexual sins, HIV diseases, sickness and in jail? What was the stubbornness of God’s people that Jesus wept over? Jesus wept because His people did not understand His mission. They denied the Savior, the Messiah that God sent; They rejected the gift that God gave them unconditionally. He wept over the lostness of the people in Jerusalem because they would reject Him as their Savior just as John declared in John 1:11 - "He (Jesus) came unto His own, but His own received Him not." Jesus knew that by Friday morning – 6 days later, the same crowd praising Him as a King would be shouting a different message - “Crucify Him!” Jesus cried because He saw the faces in the crowd cheering, shouting, but they did not understand the message of true peace; It was hidden from them.
Jesus wept because of their rejection of the Messiah would bring a terrible consequence to their people because they would choose wars rather than peace. By waving palm branches they were showing that they expected Jesus to be another warlord, a military general who would lead them to overthrow the Romans. We need to understand that the Jews were under the Roman oppression at that time. There were heavy taxes, restrictions, numerous executions by means of crucifixion. So, in a natural sense, the Jews were in search of someone, a king, a conqueror, someone to set them free. They had seen the mighty works of this man Jesus. They witnessed of Him restoring sight to the blind. They saw the evidence of Him healing the lame. They saw Him feed the multitude with a little boy’s lunch, and had leftovers to spare. They heard about Him raising Lazarus from the dead. They listened to Him teach with authority. The timing was right, approaching the Passover feast. And just maybe now, Jesus would somehow lead them from the oppression and cruel treatment they received from the Roman government. The people desired deliverance from the Romans’ oppression; But they did not understand Jesus came to deliver them from the bigger problem of sin’s oppression. They had eyes, but they didn’t see; They had ears, but they didn’t hear. They missed the whole point of the message that God had given to them through Jesus Christ, His Son.
Jesus cried because He saw their terrible destiny that was coming - “For the days shall come upon thee; that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” Here is a group of people desiring relief and salvation from oppression, and failing to see their opportunity for true relief with God in Christ, His Son. If they accepted Jesus as the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, and with all effort had lived in peace with others, not rebellious to the Romans’ government, then they would not reap the consequence happened about 40 years later in 70AD. What happened in 70AD?
As Jesus sat upon the colt, He saw ahead the Temple of God beyond the years when an army surrounding the Holy City and the temple stones being taken down & the whole city leveled. According to the historian, Josephus, showed that in 70 A.D., a Roman general named Titus, set siege against Jerusalem because they did finally revolt and over one million Jews were killed. Jesus saw ahead the bodies in the streets and blood running in the gutters, and hundreds of thousands of people crying because they were starving to death, while Titus waited for Jerusalem to surrender. The people did it their way. They acted upon their terms, and it brought about judgment on themselves. Jesus wept because He saw ahead the terrible consequence of their rejection of the Messiah and about to make wars to the Romans. More than that, Jesus wept because of a city with so many lost souls on the way to the eternal lake of fire, because they rejected the Savior God sent.
Is Jesus still weeping? Jesus is at the right hand of the Father praying and weeping for the lost souls. He looks across the world and weeps for many nations such as Syria, North Korea, China, Việt-nam… are in turmoil. He looks across America and weeps for San Francisco, New York City, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Baton Rouge. Jesus looks and sees that the political leaders throughout the nations are interested more in their own agendas, than moral standards that our fathers had established and died for. Jesus looks out over our cities today and sees crimes, He sees problems of drugs, alcohol, gambling addictions, abortion and sexual abuse, atheist and homosexual agenda promotions freely. He looks out and sees the graves of teenagers who died prematurely at the hands of their own classmates, gunned down at school. He sees lives that are torn apart, kids without fathers and mothers, hearts that are empty, He sees suicide, rape, murder, divorce, racism, porns freely promoted on Internet. Jesus weeps because He sees that many Christians gather in His churches on nearly every street corner, to wave palm branches and sing "Hosanna!" but in many ways, they have turned their backs on God. Is Jesus still weeping for His church to take no urgency in sharing the message of peace? Would Jesus weep when He sees the church worries so much about the things of this world and careless about the works of God. He looks into His churches who are in sleepy modes, have no passion for the things of God; and if it is, only for a short time. They are more concern of making money, about income taxes, worried about job security, worried about the color of their IPhone, worried about their health, then the great commission. He sees people who are so busy doing things here and there that they never bother to consider those things that are eternally important, the lost souls around them? Their heart is dry, their pillows are not wet with tears for the lostness of their neighbors, relatives, friends, and co-workers. Jesus sees the churches going through the motions of service, and praise Him for what they want Him to do, instead of praising Him for who He is. They are busy with activities and all kinds of programs, meetings, fellowship and less concern about discipleship and evangelism? He sees the church is callous of the conviction of sins. They talk a lot, discuss a lot, but walk very little. He sees that the church people talk a lot about love, but prefer to get even rather than to forgive.
Maybe I exaggerate, but the question is - If Jesus enters VHBC today and looks into our faces and our heart, would He weep? Maybe He would weep because He sees our desires have been so self-centered, instead of God-centered. We are saved, but perhaps we have never accepted Him as Lord, we have been doing things on our own, with our own strength?
Maybe it is time for us to weep. It is time for us to look at ourselves and repent. It is time for the VHBC returning to the Lord. It is time for the heart cleansing of our own selfish ways and submitting to Jesus as Lord, and not just our Savior. It is time for us to “get rid” all sins that pull us down from living a life not pleasing God and the Lord Jesus.
